Overall Rank = 155/420
Age Group = 40+
Age Group Rank = 20/31
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30am. Threw stuff in the van. Stopped by at WAL*MART to pick up a 6-pack of Gatorade Rain and Powerbar gel. Stopped at McDonald's and ordered an Egg McMuffin. Drank about a half bottle of Gatorade. Set up in transition towards the exit of the bike area, 'cause that's what all the big kids were doing. Saw Wally and company. Wally's doing the Half Iron tomorrow. Also talked to Scott a bit before the swim...
Event warmup:

Walked back to the van to get my towel (forgot it). Swam a QUICK 200 yds. Water was warm.
Swim
  • 16m 40s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started on the inside back (clockwise course). Got a great draft off of several swimmers for about 100 yds, then one of them switched to breast stroke, and it got a little too dangerous to follow, so I stayed to the side of him. Really hugged the buoys on this swim (swam with the big boys), but that came with its disadvantages. Swimmers were jockeying for positions close to the buoys, and I got clocked in the head twice by the same person. Took in a gulp of water on that one. Halfway through the swim, I had one of those 'I'm doing a tri, this is SO cool' moments. Rest of the swim got 'sandwiched in' twice, so I backed off and swam to the side. Swam side-by-side with another swimmer for the last 1/3 of the swim. Left the water, checked my time and rejoiced!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Maybe be a little more aggresive when I get sandwiched in. I guess things are a little different when you're not back of the pack anymore...
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

Nothing spectacular. In transition, pulled wetsuit legs all the way down to the ankles before trying to pull them off the feet. Worked well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 53m 12s
  • 18 miles
  • 20.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Only goal was to maintain at least 18 mph. Hills for me were brutal. Had to drop down to the low gears and spin faster to maintain RPMs.
What would you do differently?:

Train more...and when I do train more, train hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Two slip-ups. We needed to run over the timing mat, so I swung my right leg off the bike and behind my left foot. My left foot was still cleated in, so when I came to a stop, it was a little tricky, but I nudged my left foot out of the pedal just in time. That would have been 'funny' to wipe out right at the timing mat.

I also missed my row running into transition, so I did a Fred Flinstone stop (feet were trying to go backward, but they kept slipping on the cleats).
What would you do differently?:

Pratice bike dismount. Pay attention in transition. Slow down.
Run
  • 41m 23s
  • 5 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Tried to maintain 9:30s on the uphills. Ended up being anywhere up to about 10:45s on some of the hills. My last split was a 6:43. I DEFINITELY left too much out on the course for this run, but not having driven the course beforehand, I'll take it...
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Post race
Warm down:

Talked with Wally and company. They were GREAT jockstrappers. Congratulated Becca and Dawn (2 gals I always see at the Edinborough pool). They started 7 min behind me and finished about a min behind me. They ROCKED this race (1:49)!...oh to be 20 and fit again...

2 hotdogs! Favorite post race meal. Talked to John and Josh. John wasn't going to do this race because of lack of training, but he's glad he did. I feel the same way.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

Great race. Wasn't going to do this one, but glad I did. Impressed myself on the swim and bike, but a few folks said the bike course may have been short...

Nice race! I've heard the hills are a *challenge* on this course and your reports seems to confirm that. Way to go on the swim! Think of the progress!!

Congratulations Sal! I looked up your results right after I checked my brother's time. Just wanted to let you know that he checked yours too First thing he mentioned was your swim time. Excellent. Water was great I heard with plenty of room to spread out, that is if you weren't buoy "hugging". Great job on the bike too. Biting the mat would not have looked so great coming across the mat. You would have been the topic of conversation for many though. You had some great times today. Another perfect day for a tri.

Great race Sal!  Sounds like all of the hard work training really came together.   Now it's focus on that half-marathon, right?

Uh...resounding YES to both hills and swim progress...not hard to improve on 4:24 min/100 yds (1st tri...didn't even write a race report because I was so 'embrassed')...anything sub 2 for me is an accomplishment...now if I could only break 1:45s in an open water...

Sounds like you had an awesome time in the race in all areas (except maybe the run, as you said, maybe too much in the tank)

Way to go!!!  Seems like all these folks I met last year are getting so fast at the end of this year.

Great race and time.  Your were shooting for an 18 min/mile bike and broke 20.  That is pretty good.
