Subject: Tri friends are the best-but a question about HED 3's
Racing a sprint this weekend, haven't really been giving it my best training effort, but I feel pretty prepared.  I rode the bike course yesterday at a good effort on the second half (mostly downhill), and felt good about where I am on the bike.  But, there are a couple of ticks of speed to be gained still.

Just got an email from a training partner this morning, in regards to the race (he's not racing, just coming out to spectate):
"hey, if you want to use my HED 3’s you certainly can. As Paul would say…”Free Speed” Plus you would look really cool."

I am jumping at the chance to ride on these wheels.  However, the course uses a county park with 4 speed bumps in it.  The race director is installing 4 ramps on the front side of each bump, but nothing on the backside.  These things are about 4" tall.  Will I be buying my friend a new set of HED 3's at the end?  I weigh about 145, and I've heard HEDs are pretty bombproof.

Terrible idea Bill. You want to give me the HED 3s and use that natural speed you have in the race!

I have a old set of Specialized trispokes (predecessor to HEDs) you should be fine - they really are almost indestructable and a 4" bump won't have any effect. I've ridden my at speed over those types of speedbumps - no problem.

You can probably do sweet jumps off the ramps and be fine with HED3's, they are very sterdy.

Was trying to figure out how to post without you seeing it...

Hope we get a chance to chat out there.  I'm heading to packet pickup sometime shortly after noon tomorrow I think.

You should be OK on those sweet jumps.

"You got like three feet of air that time."

You got that right.  He will be handsomely rewarded for sure!  If nothing else, for the bling factor!

I am 190-205lbs at any give point in the season.  Before I got my Zipp disk I rode H3's front in back for every race.  Never had a problem with them at all.   I went over a set of tarp covered train tracks a few years ago at the 70.3 World Champs in Clearwater.  I hit them so hard that my aero bars actually dropped about 2 inches.  Thank god it was the end of the bike portion.  The wheels were totally fine.  No issues.

Only thing to note about these wheels.  I have noticed that if you have a course with a lot of turns, stopping and starting or reduction in speed due to cornerning that it take a little more effort to "spin" the wheels back up to race pace.  But once you get them humming they spin great.

Have fun!
