Ok...this might sound like a rookie question but what has been your experience with this or any other chamois cream?

Last year I rode over 4000 miles and am on target for this year as well.  Have never used the stuff nor needed it.  But recently I've been kinda rubbed raw, if you will.  It's just on the left side, if that matters.  So I tried some and it seemed to keep the pain at bay.

So is it to prevent saddle sore, fix when you have one, both?

Both....prevents chafing and helps if you already have a saddle sore.

I've switch to DZ nuts myself.

I love the Assos cream.  It is a little tingly, so it doesn't always feel great if you are already raw.  It has helped prevent sores more than anything else I've used.

Both

you can also get the chamois butt'r now that has menthol and witch hazel, which is the good stuff in assos.

Also, try plain witch hazel on cotton swabs to the affected area post ride.

I use Chamois Buttr to prevent those injuries. I DEFINITELY notice when I forget - after 30 mins or so I'm in pain. Maybe I've trained those parts to be sissy... If I'd just HTFU, maybe I owuldn't need it. Perhaps its like Chap Stick?

I wouldn't!  It's really tingly, especially if you already have chafing.  Not good for little ones.

Probably not, but you can go the other route and use the diaper rash stuff as a chamois creme. Lots of folk around here ride with Boudreaux's Butt Paste.

Other good alternatives that are cheaper than the Assos include Body Glide and Bag Balm.

I like Bag Balm.  Or DZ-Nuts.  I think they all work about the same from my experience.  Just remember to protect your junk.

I've tried others, but the Assos Cream is just amazing.  It was night and day for me in post-long ride feel compared to other products...

Assos is a great product, and it's a nice little tingly feeling.  AND IT WORKS!!!
