All right, here we go. A real thread, with our REAL name.
I just got back from a 7 mile run, putting me at 20 for the month so far. Looking good, and on schedule.

Just a heads up, you can change your thread name without loosing all your posts. Just let the administrators know. We found this out after we lost 4 pages of posts, not that we needed them. Beth gave us that heads up on our thread and I'm returning that good info to you'll.

Good to know. Should we shut down this thread then? I don't mind losing a few pages of posts, but I'm pretty flexible to whatever the team wants to do.

I love cold weather stuff. I wish I lived where it actually gets cold, that would be awesome. As it is, here, I only break out the tights in late January and February.
Everybody is doing a great job, every time I look in on our logs, there's pink squares everywhere. Speaking of which, I should get a little breakfast in me so I can get my run in. Happy Hump Day Turkeys!

Arm warmers, wool jersey, skull cap, gloves, and knee warmers. Ive never ridden in winter or even in the cold before, so basically had no cold riding gear. The knee warmers needed a garter belt though!

Before Masters swim tonight, I am going to try two things over at the track by the pool. A mile "time trial" and a mile barefoot running. Looking forward to seeing how each turns out. 26 degrees here this morning. I know that isn't cold for some places, but its about 35 degrees too cold for this guy, especially without that thick layer of fat I had last winter!

Why barefoot running?

OK, I *will* go to the pool before going home tonight. Hold me to it.

get thee to a pool!

there was a thread recently with an article pasted that posited that shoes cause injuries.  4 major points/datum i thought were interesting:

1) unshod populations (ie primitive peoples that don't wear shoes) have way lower incidences of things like bunions, plantar fascitis, shin splints, whatever.

2) in a survey of i think ~5000 runners at some long course event, the runners with shoes > $95 had more injuries than runners with shoes < $95.

3) if you think about it, a human's foot is supposed to be biomechanically able to handle lots of running and walking.  the first shoes were made to protect the soles of feet, and protect only - not to absorb shock.  if you put a layer in to absorb shock for your body, your body gets all confused because the signals of what it's supposed to do are all muffled by your fancy shoes.

4) i forgot about this part - some studies  have shown that children who go mostly barefoot prior to the age of 6 have fewer foot problems than those who wear shoes all the time.

i just read it the other day, i thought it was interesting enough to consider trying barefoot running sometime.  a few BTers have finished marathons only wearing water shoes from walmart to protect the soles of their feet from debris.

yup that was the post that got me thinking about it. The track at UT is right by the pool so I think I will just make a habit of doing a mile each time before I go to swim and try and build up some of those foot muscles.

I love barefooting! If I hadn't ever done a barefoot run, I never would have really gotten into running. It teaches you proper form and strengthens your feet and ankles. I train in racing flats, but still get in a bit of barefooting when I can.
Today was a 3 mile run this morning, and just finished up 53 minutes of yoga. Does anybody else have a hard time concentrating during the meditation portion of yoga? My mind always wanders to what we're having for dinner, things I have to do at work, that hot guy in the line at the market, etc.

Well I found out a lot today. The first thing is wow, how do people run marathons at 5:00 pace! I couldn't even do a mile at it. The barefoot running was cool, but even a mile might have been too much to start, my form went to crap after 800m. And wouldn't you know I get over to swim practice after burning up my legs and it is a legs workout.

laura, what kind of racing flats do you wear?  i'm thinking of getting some to try this whole "no support" thing.  which could be interesting because i wear motion control shoes with powerstep insoles....pretty much on the other side of the spectrum .

Nike Zoom Marathoners. I also wear Nike Free 5.0 and 3.0 for shorter workouts. I have really flat feet and I overpronate, but the Marathoners work really well for me. I've only put 55 miles on them, but they're still my favorite shoe to run in. Been thinking of trying out my orthotics in them, maybe 5 minutes at a time, see what happens. I like to tinker.

VA gets cold. Relatively speaking. I'm in NC, remember? LOL

Personally, I love the tropics. Beaches and warm ocean water. Palm trees. Sunshine. Men in bathing suits..... oops, nevermind. Forgot I wasn't on the Twisnibbins thread.

Although Atlantia - with those legs of yours, I bet you'd be a BIG hit on the beach!

Pink squares in logs are awesome! Workouts are awesome! Challenges are awesome!

And don't forget - if you want chatter, visit BT Party Central (aka Twisnibbins). We're on page 54 or so. LOL

Atlantia and LisaZ - I read your comments about barefoot running and.....

I wore socks, and did it on the treadmill tonight.... INTERESTING!

It definitely changed my running technique. I ran 0.76 miles without walking. Which, for me, is a first. And I felt like I could keep going (but I didn't want to push it).

It felt like my stride shortened and I didn't land on my heel as hard.

We'll see what I feel like tomorrow. My knee and ankle feel a bit tight, but right now, there's no pain.

THANK YOU for posting about this. Very interesting concept!

First what are you doing posting after midnight.....^^^^^^^^

Just checking in terrors.

5.1 miles today and that is it!!!!!! Yeahah.  I think I am going to look into the flats also.  It will probably lower my milage for awhile but I am tired of my arches killing me.  I was an athletic trainer and I have been lazy about strengthening my arch and smaller calf muscles.

Its Thursday.
