Yeah, in astronomy that's almost the same thing.

I agree, it's probably more of a someone caught whiff of the story and ran with it and (hopefully) it got out of the swimmer's control (said totally out of my a$$)

IMO a bit of both; the AP for rushing to report the story without caring to check if that was even possible and from her and her team because originally it was reported on a article on SI back on Nov 08 that the plan was THAT, to swim 2500 Mi swim from Cape Verde to Barbados. This is (or was) even posted on her Facebook page. To now come out and say it was never the plan, well it makes it sound fishy. If that wasn't the plan why let run an article from SI and even have it cited on her Facebook under news?

Still, it is cool she swam 250 miles on 25 days (not easy at all) but this whole ‘misunderstanding’ sort of makes this story lose its shine at least for me.

Then again, maybe she did try to correct them and they blew her off.  Wouldn't be the first time an outlet ignored the truth.

In multiple interviews and in multiple articles (including her Facebook  page) she said she planned to "swim across the Atlantic."

Then in this article they said they "hit a snag" but never bother to mention that she only swam less than 10% of the distance.

So maybe the AP jumped the gun a bit but she didn't exactly correct them.

Didn't know that was the initial plan.  Huh.  I agree with your last statement.

What's sad is my local 10pm newscast had video of her in the water and spoke about her amazing feat.

IMO, she is to blame. She lied in the article saying something to the effect that "she never intended to swim the whole way." That's a lie. The story was well published up here that she was intending to swim the entire way in a shark-proof cage dragged behind the sailboat. I posted the story from the Aspen Times months ago on this forum somewhere.

ETA:
Here is the article clearly stating she intended to swim the whole thing:
