St. Petersburg, Florida
United States
69F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 52m 22s
Overall Rank = 1394/3028
Age Group = w30-34
Age Group Rank = 50/157
Pre-race routine:

transition closed at 0700 so got bodymarked and set up transition about 0640, hung out by the swim finish to watch the pros come in, walked the 3/4 mile over to Spa Beach and hung out on the pier watching the earlier waves start until about 0810
Event warmup:

none- was cool enough w/ the wind that I didn't want to get wet first. figured the swim would be brutal enough without playing in it first
Swim
  • 34m 6s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

This swim sucked! The waves and chop were miserable. As the sun came up and it got later in the morning, the wind picked up. Of course, the women start later. Just did the best I could with my limited ocean swim experience(2nd race ever in the ocean). Didn't wear a wetsuit because I felt it wouldn't make a difference. Was plenty warm enough without it. Lots of DNFs from the swim today.
What would you do differently?:

Drink less of Tampa Bay. Get more experienced at swimming in the ocean, was over 20 seconds/100 yds slower than normal today.
Transition 1
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

rack 15 from the swim & bike finish area
What would you do differently?:

Tighten the handlebar bolts so that the cowhorns don't move under my body weight. Apparently didn't tighten them enough when I put it back together Friday night.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 23s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Pass fest! Basically got down into the aero positioned and passed tons of people. Would love to know overall bike rank but the results don't have it. Suggests that at least the bike training is moving in the right direction.
What would you do differently?:

Tighten my handlebars!!! Affected cornering, turns mostly.
Transition 2
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

After tearing feet up running sockless Tuesday, today required socks for the run. Time lost in transition would have been lost much worse from painful feet so it was worth it. Put hat, garmin on while running.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 56m 45s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm not a fast runner so I was reasonably happy with this pace after the swim/bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not get my energy sapped in the swim. Bike was okay but felt it in the run.
Post race
Warm down:

got my medal and a gatorade

Went and hung out at the BT area. BTitched about the swim w/ other sympathetic BTers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim!
Didn't taper for this race, been training to race HIM/IM so maybe some more speed/LT training but not sure how much difference it would make

Event comments:

Good selection of food and lots of it but long line to get it. No wait for massage. Took long time to get race results posted.

It was great getting to meet the other BTers. Thanks to Jess for organizing activities even though the only thing I got to was the pasta dinner at Dish Saturday evening. I got to sit next to Ron- yes, BT founder Ron and then saw him on the run. The BT tri suits are very nice when you see it in person. You think that people must be pretty neat reading their blogs and then discover that they are actually even cooler. All in all, a good event and one that I would do again.

Nice race!!

Sounds like the waves/ocean was nasty....would have been a huge mental challenge for me.

Pass fest sounds wicked fun!

Nice times all around....it is fun meeting BTers in person....the uniforms are great!

Congrats!

Great race!  Excellent time in rough conditions!

But the fact that you already had your RR up means you didn't party hard enough with the BT crew last night!!!!

Something told me at Sat's swim practice that you would really have a great race and that something was right. Hats off for the no wet suit swim, that's fearless. Excellent bike and run and great report. It was good to meet you and good luck this season.

Great job on the tough ocean swim. Really good time on the bike - considering how strong the wind was you really smoked it. Congrats!

Great race. Seems like all your work has paid off, b/c your rankings are up there I would have been a bit worked up if this were my first race and I had to do a swim like that. I'm not sure how you'd prepare yourself to swim in chop and swells and swallow all that salt water. As for the bike. I'm happy your bike stayed together. Lesson learned. Next time double check reassembly. Looks like you smoked the ride. Not a bad pace for the run Great job, hope you had fun

Looks like you did really well in all 3!  Biking in windy conditions is almost as hard as swimming in them, but it looks as though you weren't fazed.  Nice job

Hey Lynne,

You did well. You're not slow in the swim and your bike speed was awesome!

Great to see more BTers.  Did you get an autogrph from Ron?
