Subject: Class

I remember reading that once you register for a class that you have to stay in that class for the year. I recently completed my first Tri as a Clyde at a healthy 205. Since then my weight has dropped to 199 and I anticipate being around 195 for my next Tri.
Legally can I  enter in my age group (44-49)?
I have virtually no chance of finishing in the top three, I was second last in my first Tri, and I am not going to stop with the weight loss.
I don't want to do anything to jeapordize my future standing.

thanks

I never heard that.  I think you are mistaken...

You can ONLY qualify for clydes if you are over 200 and can race AG any time you wish....

VTS rules state that once you compete in a particular event category, you must remain in that same category for all future VTS events in that calendar year.

It is true of setup events because they do year-long standings for all the tris in the series.  However, I would contact them and let them know what the situation is.  I think they will be understanding of your situation.

Well, considering the question is regarding a very specific rule for a specific tri series rather than a USAT class rule it doesn't surprise me.

Clydesdale and Athena are not official USAT classes or age groups. They are separate scoring/grading categories that are instituted and defined at the pleasure of the people and organization putting on a specific race. The race you did in Virginia and the one in Buffalo are run by separate entities so there's no requirement to register as a Clydesdale for Buffalo.

USAT Standings are based on date of birth (Age Group), not weight.

Actually, the USAT Competitve Rules do "officially" define those weight classes:

3.2 Age Group Competition.

a. All age group athletes must participate and compete in the age group division corresponding to the athlete’s age on December 31 of the year of the event.

b. Clydesdale/Athena Categories. The official minimum weight standards for this category is 200 pounds for men, 150 pounds for women, to be monitored by the local race director. The age breakdown will be 39 years of age and under and 40 years of age and over.

But you're correct as far as the standings.

The people at setup events are reasonable (and do a good job running races, IMO). I'd just contact them and explain.  They may tell you that you are ineligible to win any awards for the series, but I can't imagine that they will tell you that you can't compete as an AGer, and obviously you can't compete as a Clyde anymore.  Telling you that you just can't compete is bad business for them (and somehow I don't think they'll tell you that if you want to compete you have to put the pounds back on!).

Maybe you could offer to carry a 5lb. weight and compete as a Clyde.Wink

Fair enough for THIS event.  But I was thinking more big picture and USAT rules...

good luck with that.  I would think they would make the exception in this case.

Okay I contacted the people from all three races I am looking at.
1) New York Does not have that rule, enter by age.
2) Clyes and Athena's are considered a subset, so enter by age.

Thank you all for your input and suggestions.
