Seriously, how would you go about selling all the furniture in your house and everything outside of some clothes, bikes and personal stuff. I need a starting point. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We are currently doing a version of that. Going from the 2,000 sq foot family home for 23 years to a 1,100 square foot rental until we decide what is next.l I LOVE getting rid of stuff. Honestly we didn't do the selling route as we are still taking the "good" furniture. We got rid of most everything to friends and family. The new home owners which is a young family are taking some stuff. It is amazing what people will take when it is free. Lots of it was old and worn so it wasn't a big deal. For us it is worth it if we know things are going to a good home. A few trips to the local donation places and so far one trip to the dump. My family moved across the world when I was a kid with just two small crates for the 4 of us so being attached to "stuff" is not our thing, which helps. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with the list posted above, Also, if you have items you want to sell that will not go locally for the price you want, especially name brand items, ebay is another option. |

Queen BTich ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You live in Atlanta, you can get rid of a ton of stuff on Craigslist and it's on your time, rather than a garage sale. However a garage/estate sale will get more gone in one day. Donate/trash: you'd be surprised what people will pick up off the curb. Especially if you post a "Free" add on Craigslist. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You can send the bikes to me..... ![]() While Goodwill is an option of donating the things that don't sell on CL, garage/estate sale, etc....think of donating to a woman's shelter or crisis center. Goodwill gets a ton of things but in working with my city a lot, there is always a need at advocacy centers and those get put to good use. Best of luck with your plans......and those bikes can be shipped to either my work address or home address..... |

It worked out well. |

It worked out well. Yep, us too. Except we did two yard/garage/estate sales about 6 months apart. One to get rid of everything we didn't want and the second one to get rid of everything we'd used for staging our house (mostly furniture and some decor items). It worked great. We donated stuff after both, of course. Life is simpler now, sort of. ![]() One thing we hadn't thought of that you might want to keep in mind is where the stuff you are keeping will go. We brought only the essentials with us, but except for the kitchen (which was the same size), our new house has very little built in storage and tiny closets. So even though we got rid of thousands of dollars of stuff, we still are living with boxes lining some rooms of our house until we can figure out how to make the best use of our space. Another thing to keep in mind is where to donate. Some places take furniture, some don't. Some will pick up, some won't. Some will take electronics or TV's, most won't. It is extremely helpful to figure all that out in advance of the actual planned donation day so that you aren't left scrambling. Edited by GLC1968 2013-06-05 12:09 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Salvation Army. The great thing is that they still pick up. We moved last summer and downsized. We gave away some furniture to friends, some to SA. Clothes went to SA and a couple of other "pick up at the curb" charities. Hired a junk company to take some stuff to the dump. Gave some things to the new homeowners. |

Agree with this, but would add e-bay before craigslist... all sorts of crap sells on e-bay and unlike CL you don't have to wade though dozens of calls and e-mails (and in some cases visits) from folks who have no intention of buying your stuff. Not so practical for furniture and such, but anything that you can easily ship is fair game for e-bay in my book. |

You plan on living in a shack in the woods?? ![]() I agree with Lisa's suggestion, but consider the give-aways to your friends first if you are not worried about the pay/cash side. Furniture? Well, college-kids will lap that stuff up quick! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think the first step in downsizing is to find someone to come look at your stuff and provide values. Often people will spend loads of time trying to sell stuff online and either price it too high or unknowingly sell to low. Once you know the values, you can make informed decisions and figure out how you want to handle the merchandise - sell? gift? donate? dispose? There are many companies that offer 'transition' services. I actually launched a division in the company I work for (Canadian auction co) that does this. Handling it yourself can be very time consuming - as someone else mentioned - photographing, uploading, dealing with the emails etc and people bidding things down. Many people appreciate the hassle free aspects of oursourcing it however there can be a cost associated with it. If you have a general array of things you may want to search for an online auction service that charges a fee, takes care of everything and creates a competitive bidding environment. Good luck! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ooh. Over 3 weeks overseas and BT has totally changed. I hope I'm replying to this correctly. Anyway, seems like people have suggested how to sell your stuff, here's how to figure out what to keep, what you need, and what you don't. Pack your stuff. All of it. Like you're moving to a new house. As you need things, take them out. After a while, you'll figure out what you need and what can stay in the box and be given away and sold. Good luck with downsizing! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Figured I'd give you guys a bit of an update. When I made the decision to do this I have myself a time line of a week. The goal was to get rid of things that I didn't need. Getting maximum value out of them was not a priority. And I'm too lazy to look that stuff up myself. So I started with FB and through those connections was able to sell most of my stuff. People got great deals on stuff I was not using anyway. I also got to give a newly married Soldier and his wife a full 4 piece set of Noritake China that they could never afford and was just sitting in my cupboard. I was also able to help out a recently divorced mother and her daughter same some cash on furniture and odds and ends. I spend a day and a half looking at Apartments and after 12 different properties I decided on the first one I saw. It's funny how life points you in the direction you should go but sometimes we don't listen. So as I sit here in my new place, less than 1 week later I am happy and free of a bunch of crap that I didn't need and certainly didn't define me. I started this process on Tuesday of last week. I still brought some stuff that I don't need but will clean that out once I set up the new place. Went from 3,000 ft^2 to just over 900 and love it! |

Pretty much what I am going through right now. He comes back and takes whatever he says is his (including money)and goes on his merry way. Not even a backward glance at his children as he drives away. |

Not even a backward glance at his children as he drives away. PM'd you. Was trying to make a joke. My ex is my best friend, it just took a while to get there. And to be honest,m the greatest lesson is I did not need a massive house or all that material 'stuff' to be happy. Just my family (and some carbon fiber). |
