Has anyone here heard of the Patriot Guard

Champion  5376    PA |  Subject: Has anyone here heard of the Patriot GuardThe mission is, when invited by the families, attend funerals of fallen vets. In some cases, the purpose is not only to show respect to other vets, but to also shield the funeral from protestors. Thoughts? |

God bless them. http://www.patriotguard.org/ Yup, I'm going to be doing a couple rides this month. I have yet to hear or read anything negative about the group so I joined. I met many of them last year during the national fallen firefighter memorial here in md. That church group came to protest stating that firemen were f*gs and deserved to die. The support that they provide to the troops and to their families is amazing. There is nothing like being at a small airport at 3 am when a flight full of troops comes in and they are expecting no one there. There are 20 patriot guard waiting for them with flags cheering and hootin and hollering. Its awesome. They also attended my grandfather in laws funeral and had a flagline as they brought the casket in for the ceremony. Oh and the rides are fun too. Great bunch of people (and you dont have to have a motorcycle to join.) Shortyy |

It was a procession to the memorial for the 4 murdered police officers in Tacoma, WA. VERY powerful ride, some 100 bikes or more (I never heard the official count). We rode to the memorial, had the silence, then the "biker's salute" (deafening to say the least), then a ride-by of the police station. Awesome group of people, mostly Harley's and other cruisers (I was one of two sport bikes present, but not descriminated against in the least) with a few touring rigs thrown in. If the missions weren't mostly on days I'm working, I'd do a lot more of them. |

However, that doesn't mean that they're OK with me, so I'm glad to see people doing what they can to keep the interference to a minimum. |

Being in my 20s I am easily the youngest person at these events, most are vets or retired folks that can support the missions during the workday. I just try and make it when I can in the evenings and on the weekends. |

That being said, I want a motorcycle JUST to ride with these guys. What they do is awesome and makes me proud. |

It was amazing to see the entire procession. It was interesting to see the different ages of the riders, both male and female, and the different types of bikes. I can tell you it makes a huge impact on the community to see the support the Patriot Guard gives to the family and loved ones of the fallen. The Guard rode in the procession bringing our Marine home, stood guard for hours at the wake, rode in the procession for the funeral, stood guard at the funeral and then escorted him to the airport for his final journey to Arlington. If my husband ever gets another bike, I'll encourage him to join. |

My 1SG and I went to his funeral in the UP of Michigan. There were, thankfully, no protesters at his funeral service. There were, however TONS of Patriot Guard rider support. They helped lead the procession from the funeral home to the high school where the service was held, and there were many of them who stood outside with flags for 6+ hours between the public viewing and the service. It was early NOV in Michigan, it was raining/sleeting and they stood stalwart. The whole town did--it was a sad and tragic occasion, but between what the Patriot Guard riders did, what the state and local law enforcement did, and the whole town really (big high school packed), I have never seen anything so personally patriotic as how they honored SPC Brandon Steffey. I am deeply grateful to all of the veteran organizations and support organizations who support, shield, and honor the fallen and the family of the fallen. |

I've never been at an event where they were in attendance, but several times I've seen a group of them on the highway. I always make sure to wave or give a thumbs-up or show some other visible sign of approval, and I've always received a smile back. |

Their mission is clear in terms of showing respect for fallen heros and their families, as well as shielding the funeral from protestors. They also only establish a mission when invited by the family. In some cases, there are no protestors but their presence is a show of respect. This is all about the simple motto, "Do the right thing." |
