Pro 4189 Pittsburgh, my heart is in Glasgow | Subject: RE: Do you give to charity this season? We have a few that we support year round, but we did: - Angel Tree at church for a man and for a child (Was super easy, adult wanted long thermal underwear and the child needed clothes for an 18 month old, and I work for REI...was done and done and I was able to give more than normal because of my employee discount) -Food bank (gave cans and loads of peanut butter) -Western PA Humane Society. My mom and dad always give year round, and then give a little more at Xmas, so we do too. So many of our best friends have come from there so we can never give enough. I also gave them a donation to wrap our Christmas presents when they had a station in the mall...I stink at it so it was easier to give them a donation to do it (plus, there were puppies!) -I give whatever spare change I've got in my pocket/purse every time I pass a Salvation Army kettle. Master 1457 MidWest | Subject: RE: Do you give to charity this season? Hubby donates year-round to United Way. I am constantly taking items to Goodwill. I try to put change in the kettles when I go by. I put food in the food drives (usually baby food because I remember how expensive I thought it was 16+ years ago). Hadn't thought about donating to the humane society. I love our 2 kitties so I may add that to the list. |

Expert 1461 Sarnia, Ontario | Subject: RE: Do you give to charity this season? This time of year I always like to give to the food bank. One of the local high schools has a can drive every year and they come door to door. I make sure there's lots of extra good stuff in the pantry this time of year for that reason. At the mall they have a donation spot around a christmas tree for toys for underprivileged kids. This year I explained to my 4 year old how it worked because she wanted to know who all the toys where for. So we went to toys'r us so she could pick out a toy to donate. She was so sweet putting the toy under the tree. I try to put change in the Salvation army pots whenever I have it. I always donate and help the Shriners out whenever I can, the brothers do good work. I am fortunate enough to have a good job and a healthy family, this time of year it is important to remember those who don't... Faith, hope and charity, the greatest of these is charity... |

New user 900 , | Subject: RE: Do you give to charity this season? As a recipient of Christmas charity many, many years ago when I was eleven, I must say that you will never know how your charity affects those you help. Our family was poor but that Christmas my father was gravely ill in the hospital and had been there for about six weeks. We had no tree or presents and very little food. However, on Christmas eve, a local men's service club showed up with a tree, presents, food and all the trimmings as well as money for bills. Believe me, none of us have ever forgotten the generosity shown to us. The impact that it had on me personally, has played a role in how I have lived my life for the forty years since. Let me thank all of you for your generosity and may God bless. |

I'm debating on which charity this year, what a different twist and not put all my ornaments on one tree so to speak. That's such a personal decision for everybody- there are so many different reasons to donate. My brother and I each make a donation in each others name for Christmas as some of our gifts- I give to a local house charity that supports street youths with mental/emotional issues, he gives to L'Arche, a residential and day programs centre for folks with developmental disabilities (Wallace is also chair of L'Arche Vancouvers board and thus gifts his time as well.) The Saint John Boys and Girls Club- my parents were both board members and my father led the rebuilding campaign when it was destroyed by fire, so it's a family commitment. Canadian Mental Health Association- my oldest brother is a paronoid/schizo and alcoholic who could have used some help as youth, thus my support for this and the first I mentioned. The local animal shelter (cause I'm a dog loving fool). Those are the main ones for me these days; they are very personal for me and give me good feelings when I can contribute to them. I hope you can find the same! |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Do you give to charity this season? I give during the year to the Humane Society and Diabetes Association. And usually to those who ask for Team in Training or other race-related fund raisings. While I usually don't give during Christmas, this year I contributed to our office's Adopt A Family efforts. If I had all the money in the world I'd give to a local organization who serves children with disabilities (the largest one in my community actually just went bankrupt - really sad). Not because it's Christmas, but because those kids need services year-round. |

I always do an end of year to Toys For Tots - mostly because I am a former Marine and that is "our" project. |

Extreme Veteran 3177 | Subject: RE: Do you give to charity this season? The giving tree at Church, Lutheran World relief (year round). The food bank when they come by with their donation box (also through church - and year round) and the Humane Society seeing as two of our family members came from there. I prefer to donate time to them when I can but do not always have availability so I also drop off extra dog and cat food as well as extra leashes and blankets etc... It is a very personal choice but as I grew up impovrished I always try and give what I can now, even if it is not much. |

Expert 932 Madison | Subject: RE: Do you give to charity this season? We always ring the bells for the Salvation Army at least two shifts and also throw any loose change or dollar bills in anytime we pass one. We've given to our church, the dog rescue group where we got our dog this year, we donated to a mission trip that a friend will be going on to Africa, and I volunteer for Make A Wish, so they are always tops on my list. I also added the Fat Cyclist this year with his goal to raise $100,000 so we gave to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the World Bicycle Federation (I believe!). We, too, have been fortunate to have a job and good health this year. As a Mom, I want to always impress upon my kids the importance of giving back. Happy Holidays! |
