Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This might be a little long, but i am very frustrated. A little background: I was a collegiate athlete. Ran all throughout high school and then thru college. I was a sprinter and a pole vaulter, spent hours in the gym and on the track. I graduated at roughly 115lbs, sat on my arse for 3 years, gained 40lbs (I'm 4'11" tall) and was completely miserable. I started triathlons, and due to a motorcycle accident my husband had, was catapulted into some major weight loss. I lost 20 lbs in about a month due to stress, then over the last year have lost about another 20lbs. I'm sitting at about 115lbs right now. I feel healthy, but still wear around a size 7. I constantly have people come up to me and tell me i have lost too much weight, am too skinny. It drives me nuts. Even though I weigh the same, I am still larger than I was in college because of the muscle mass I had back then. I just dont get it. I have worked my arse off to get back to a responsible weight for my height and I really dont like the ridicule that I get for it. What do you say to people like that. I am at a loss and extremely frustrated.... |

I used to get this all the time from friends, and still do from some folk, even though I have NEVER been told I was too thin by a doctor. And yeah, it's freakin' annoying. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 4'11" and 115 lbs sounds perfectly healthy to me. I'm 5'1" and weight about 105 lbs, and spend half my time shopping in the kids' section. I wear size 0 for a lot brands, and even wear size 00 in some! I'd definitely agree that you're not too thin unless your doctor says you are, and I really doubt that at that weight you're even close to being dangerously skinny. If you go by the much-disputed BMI formulas, you're even in the upper end of the "healthy" range.

![]() | ![]() This is on the same level as someone telling me I'm too fat. Really, what possesses people to think this is okay? |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I totally understand. I deal with this myself. I'm 5'4 and about 124. My last physical was stellar. Folks don't also seem to realize that when you are on the little side of the scale, losing a pound or 2 can make a big visual difference. What drives me crazy is why people feel its okay to get on me for being 'too skinny,' but wouldn't dare get on someone for being obese because it would 'be rude.' I usually respond along the lines that my body is my business. If it is a co-worker, I remind them that that can be construed as harassing. I had to snicker about shopping in the kids dept! I get interesting looks when I hold up shirts or pants against my body in the boys section. But I do save alot of money. Edited by LittleCat 2008-09-02 5:19 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used to have this problem. (I am working towards losing the 80 pounds I have gained since then.) About five years ago, I was 5'3", 137 pounds, and 18% body fat. My family thought I was way too thin and were constantly telling me to eat, even though I ate almost non-stop already. I think the problem is that my family tends to be on the heavy side, so "healthy" looks thin to them. What they think is healthy is actually overweight. In response to your question, I don't think there is a perfect response. As long as you are healthy and your doctor thinks you are healthy, you shouldn't have to explain anything to others. Not knowing anything else about you, your height and weight ratio sounds great. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey -- I'm 5' 6" and took up tri to lose some extra weight. I had gone up to 142, but am now back in the low 130s. (Can't say exactly as the scale has died). I would say just listen to your own body first and the doctors next. Maybe your naysayers are just plain jealous! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Your not too skinny. I'm 6'1" and 155 lbs (I got down to 151 after a century a few weeks ago). I'm starting to get told I'm too skinny after being 180 lbs 2 year ago. Maybe you are too skinny by american/walmart standards but you are just fine. Folks in europe and asia are about the size we are and no one says they are too skinny.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You're not too thin at that ht/wt. I get crap all the time too and I'm not even close to being too thin. I'm a healthy weight for my height & frame and I know that without a doubt. What I have come to realize is that for a lot of people, it's their own lack of ability to commit to what it takes to lose body fat and get in shape....so they make comments. I have worked so hard to let the comments roll off my shoulders, but it gets really old. Really really old. So I feel for you. If you feel good about where you are and know that you are in a place where you are getting adequate nutrition and your exercise is under control, don't worry about it. If anything, feel sorry for them that they are so deceived. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 1st off, fit, healthy Tri chicks rock!!!!! Judging by your stats in your post and your avatar you fit right into that group. I know it's not always easy but many people don't like to see other people happy/succeed as it makes them feel worse about themselves so just let it roll off your back. You know if you're healthy and feeling good. I just got back from a family vacation with 11 of us and the whole time all I got was why don't you eat this, you don't know what you're missing, just a bite. I tried to explain I have nothing against "cheating" on what I typically try to eat but will only do so if I'm actually hungry. In the end they kept saying the same things, I politely said no thanks and a good time was had by all. The good news is my 13 year old nephew seems to have taken an interest in how I'm getting in shape. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Isn't it rude! People think it's ok to comment on weight as long as you're not talking about being "fat". I just blow it off and ignore it. Most people usually mean it as a compliment anyhow. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() IMO, I think a lot of those comments stem from other people's insecurities and sometimes they do mean it as a compliment, albeit poorly phrased ones. I do understand where you're coming from, I'm 5'8" and hover in the low 130's and have people tell me I'm so "skinny." (I hate that term!) I'm at a healthy weight for my body and activity level but slimmer than the "norm." If someone says something to me about it then I usually just kinda downplay it. I have worked really hard to get where I am today by exercising and watching what I eat, BUT I don't want to make someone else feel bad on purpose by bragging about it either. I think it's a difficult balancing act. It does suck that because we're active then we're the weird ones. |

Royal(PITA) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tell them to MYOB....You feel good, have energy to do what you want/need to do....your doc is on board with where you're at physically. It's just other folks insecurities and hang ups. They may be a tad overweight and your normal size reminds them of what they could be (but aren't for whatever reason). I don't know why folks feel a need to comment on other people's size (regardless of how big or little it is) other than their own insecurities coming out. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't wait to be "too skinny". People are just to use to everyone being fat to realize what healthy looks like. Edited by MartS 2008-09-03 7:28 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm pretty thin and hear crap from people all the time. I try and brush it off, but it still kind of gets to me. Then I'm annoyed with myself for feeling self conscious about it! Argh! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When they say you are too skinny just respond..."yes I am, and I feel GREAT. By the way...how is YOUR training/weight loss program working for you?" |
![]() ![]() |
Member![]() ![]() | ![]() I just think that the concept of healthy is poorly mediated by the media and popular culture where a certain body shape qualifies to be in the right "healthy" spectrum. Albeit, humans in nature tend to try to take notice and comment on what they see is not the norm. As everyone already stated, as long as you feel wonderful about your body physically and mentally, you shouldn't worry about what other people says about it. Hell, you've covered around 8 years of athleticism and that's something! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with Reno 8 above. I have heard this all my life. I am 5'10 155. Male. However as it use to bother me, now it does not, because of triathlons, marathons and you name it, I have become extremely fit and strong for my "skinny" build. I like my build because it allows me to be so darn good at all the sports that i enjoy. No, i will never turn heads in the weight room, but those same guys that say i am too thin, will be miles behind in anything with wheels, feet, or swimming arms. Be proud of your accomplishments and just dismiss those critics. Your AWESOME! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am sad that I can no longer shop in the kids department. It saves you lots of $$$ and it is nice that the pants are not all too long. Maybe some day I will again or maybe not, either way I just want to be fit, energetic, healthy and having fun. And I am working towards that goal. It seems that a lot of people think that telling someone that their skinny is a complement. I would just try to take it as one. there are some people who just like to criticize others. If that is the case I would have to try not to smack them. I guess that's isn't much help. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Most of the time this type of comment comes from the Walmart mentality...and they don't like seeing you getting fit and lean. They would rather you stay fluffy like them so they won't feel bad!!! Someone told me a month ago that they don't want to see me getting too "boney." Hehe...how does a 6 ft female who currently needs to drop about 40 pounds get BONEY??? LOL |
