As if my day ruining peoples lives in disability insurance was not bad enough, I left my front wheel behind my car when I mounted the bike to the roof rack.  It was pouring, so I jumped into my car and drove away.

When I got home I realized, so I went back, and someone had proped the wheel up for me, but Im pretty sure that when I pulled away,  I F'ing ran over it!  Either that, or the good semaritan found it the sad way....

Good news is the hub seems OK and with a new skewer and a true'ing it may be ok...

son of a!

What's the dumbest thing you have ever done with/ to your bike (besides unclip left, lean right)

I did the same thing 3 weeks ago.  Minus the rain.

My downfall was chatting with someone who had pulled up next to me in the parking lot of the LBS, I had already loaded the bike when the guy pulled up... we finished chatting I got in my truck and backed right over the wheel and I knew it immediately.  I went in got a good laugh out of the shop guys, ordered a new wheel and got a loaner.  I rode angry that night, its funny now... but I am really glad I had my Neuvation wheels on the bike when I did it.

Sorta bike related..

Last Sat. I was pulling out of driveway on my motorcycle when I noticed my bike was still on the rack of my car.  I stopped right away and put moto on kickstand....except my rear tire was still parked on the decline of the driveway. As I'm taking my bicycle off I feel a rush of wind as my moto goes crashing to the ground, missing my leg by inches.  I immedictaly throw bike back on rack and pick up the now damaged moto.  After I get it put away, I removed the bike from rack and noticed a HUGH scratch in the rear hatch of my car from a misplaced crankarm when I tossed the bike back on.  Needless to say, I was bummed....really, really bummed.

NEVER prop your wheel against the rear of your car. It's simply too easy despite best of intentions to forget about it and run it over. I was lucky the first time I made this error and stopped right before I flattened that tire. Since then, I won't leave ANYTHING propped up back there, including my bike.

I was going 80+ when a wheel came off the top of my car.  Do you know how long a wheel can travel on it's own when it starts a 80.  I think this one went at least half a mile, maybe more.

+1

Except for the fact I had two bikes on my roof rack when I did it.  Peeled the rack off the top of the car.  $1100 of sheet metal damage to my car but the brand new Giant and Specialized MTB's were unharmed except for a couple of paint scratches.  Talking a about a sick feeling!

My husband did this twice.  New bike each time because of damage to the frame.  Damage to the roof rack, damage to the car.  We now have warning signs on the garage door that hang down in your face when the garage door is up and a sign that attaches to the rearview mirror when the bikes are on the roof..

Why not just do away with the roof-top carriers? Seems like the logical move after the first incident...

Enough with your comon sense!  Laughing

Seriously though, I can't get my bike into my car (05 passat) and have all of my other gear in there.  In the winter, I roll with no less than 5 pairs of skis (don't ask).  The rooftop carrier is a must for me.

I always take my bike computer off the bike as soon as I'm done riding - I don't want to risk the back tire moving and adding time to the total. Well apparently I put it on my spoiler one day, and drove off not realizing it.

The next day I was getting ready for my ride and couldn't find the bike computer. Realizing what probably happened, I drove up to the place I was the day before, and low and behold it was sitting right there in the parking lot... UNHARMED! I was definitely shocked it had not been run over or kicked or scooped up as trash. LUCKY!

You could get a rear carrier for the bikes.  I have one for my focus.  Its easier to put your bike on, you get better gas milage, dont have to worry about the bikes running into things  and unlike what most people say if you put it on right you still have access to the trunk.(as long as you take the bike of the rack.

That's funny!  I was at the LBS at lunch today having the wheel trued ($15 to true it and $5 for a used skewer) and my buddy and I were looking at the bike racks.  We both thought, huh, I ll bet a trunk mounted one would be a lot easier...

I did this once, and now I put my garage door opener in the trunk (with the bike wheel).  That keeps me from trashing my bike/car/house.

I backed my NEW truck into the garage for 2 weeks without a cap on it while one was on order from the dealer.  Then..............you guessed it, I got it installed and it looked great until I backed into the garage (with my brand new shiny cap) and my bike was hanging on the ceiling directly over but not completely above my truck and cap.  My daughter was in the truck and told me I was pushing the bike, so I stopped then pulled forward, the bike fell off the ceiling scratched the cap and truck and put a large dent in the rear fender.
My whole family was scared to talk or even breath for a little bit.  Yeah........it was a bad moment.  The good news was the bike was undamaged but even if it was I wouldn't have cared, its a $30 Murray.  The paint however wasn't so cheap!
I did get a new CAAD 9-6 though.  Its AWESOME for a newbie!

That is a hella awesome idea.

I've never done it but my wife has done it three times.  Ahem, she's no longer allowed to drive with bikes on the roof.

1) Garage - dented the garage trim
2) Garage - dented the garage trim and ruined a bike tray
3) Carport at the apartment we shared at the time -  Cut through a parking lot and ripped our bikes (hers was brand new) and the entire rack right off the car.  No damage to the bikes or the rack but the car ended up with some serious gouges in the top.

I break stuff all the time (I'm MTB), but that's simply due to my brain thinking I'm a better rider than I actually am.
