I see alot of members here talking about going for a lunch time run or swim at work.  How do you guys do it?  I get one hour for lunch, anymore and I would be pushing my luck.  How do you get to the gym and swim, shoer and get back to work?  Or what do you do after a run, head back in to the office dripping with sweat?  I would like to be able to utilize my lunch time better, but get figure out how to get it done.

I can't in under an hour.  I ran 5 at lunch today, but a tempo 5.  I have to be pretty speedy.  I ended up taking 1hr18 minutes, including drive time there, run time, shower time, and drive time back.  Grabbed a smoothie at the cafe on the way out the door, so that was lunch in the car.

I just take a little extra time.   I see my boss maybe, maybe once a week.   He really doesn't care what I do as long as I get my work done.   I take mostly the same attitude towards the guys that work for me.

I justify the extra time in a couple of ways:

1.  Our hours are pretty flexible anyway, so leaving a little later is no big deal.
2.  I "officially" get two 10 minute "breaks" each day, which I don't take.
3.   Every time I walk outside, the same group of 4-5 people is out at the little smoker's hut, puffing away.  If the company can pay them to smoke 45 minutes (at LEAST) a day, they can pay me to swim/bike/run.

If you punch a clock, or your boss is a stickler, these may not work for you.   I'd say talk to your boss about shifting your sched just a little bit, and see if he/she is game.

I have a shower at my workplace.  And sometimes a relatively flexible schedule.  I have nice roads/boardwalks etc to run right out my office door and a very large swimming pool:

Luckily my gym is close to work. I can make it there in about 7 minutes.  I change into my swim stuff in record time (triathletes change clothes fast anyway) I get to the water and can usually do between 1300-1800 yards in about 35-40 minutes.  Then I shower really fast, change back and head back to work.  If you pack your lunch you can eat in 5-10 minutes.  I know one thing, my mood improves drastically after a lunch time workout.  Same thing when and if I run instead of swim.

I have a shower at work so going for a run is fairly easy.  Can't go for a swim in less than an hour though.  I also have flexible hours - if I take a little longer than an hour, I just stay a little later or I might come in earlier if I know my workout will go longer than the hour.

My work is very flexible.  Most of the time I swim at lunch.  Drive time, workout, shower are about 1 1/2 - 2 hours.  I normally stay a little late to make up my time but I don't think they really care.  I will run/bike sometimes but we don't have showers.  I do use wet wipes to clean up afterwards but I still feel dirty.

As a female, I haven't figured out how to do this without taking a 2-hour lunch. I tried once, and it was 2 hours. Since I work in a professional environment, I can't exactly go back to work with sopping wet hair or dripping with sweat. A shower and blow-drying my hair is a must. That alone takes 30 minutes.

I work on a military base. It's a very active place.  We have showers in the gym (1.5min walk) and I have a locker and shower in a building on the bay (1.5min walk).  I ride my bike in with all my junk in a back pack, shower and walk to my office.  I'll run during lunchish time and then take another shower.  We have a flex schedule, so it doesn't matter as long as I get 8hrs in.

We use to get 30min three days a week to work out on the clock, but that went away.  I hear rumors that its coming back.

I work on a military base. the gym is across the street. I can walk there in 5 minutes. During lunch, I usually take 40-45 minutes to work out (for run or bike), take a quick shower, and hoof it back. I keep my hair short, so wet hair dries quickly. If I take more than an hour, no biggie. Once a week, I'll take an extended lunch (an extra 30 mins) to get a longer session in.

If it's a pool session, I can just towel off, get dressed, and head back without a shower. Sure, I smell like chlorine, but I work in a cubicle. No one else has to smell me.

To me, it's the most productive use of my lunch time.

At first it's hard, but if you manage your time correctly, it can be done.

Good luck!

x2. and I would have to take off and reapply make up (plus, we have no shower here)

then again, I would still look more professional than most of the defendants...

i object to that last statement, your honor! the prosecutor is making an assumption, and thus misleading the jury into thinking that's a fact...

What is this "blow-drying" and "make up" you speak of?

Man, I'm glad I work from home.

My gym and Central Park are both within a 2 block walk from my office.  Head out to the gym, change, hit the park for the lunchtime run 30-60min, back to the gym for a quick shower then eat lunch at my desk.

A lot of people in my office hit the gym at lunch.  Working in NYC, most of us have crazy long commutes and after work workouts are difficult, especially now when it is dark before 8pm.  Luckily, my bosses don't care as long as I get my work done.  However, occasionally I will run into an extremely busy week like this one where the lunchtime trot isn't possible, working late kills the opportunity for anything after work (10 min bike last night to tweak some adjustments with my bike) and I'm too exhausted in the AM's to get a few laps in.  Just look at my pathetic training log for this week... Sucks!

Like most of the others, I have facilities near my office. I am also able to flex my schedule a bit. That being said I only have time for shorter workouts: 4-6 mile run or 45 minutes in the pool.

I'll wear running shorts under my clothes to save time. There is a product called sport wipes which a extra large tea tree wipes which are good fro freshening up with. But, If worked in a strict office it wouldn't work.

x2,  except for the "work from home" part (here in the lab, the petri dishes don't care what you look like)

X4!  The most I do is a brisk walk, usually 3 miles.  I go no matter the weather.  In the winter I bundle up, and in the summer I just pin my hair up and freshen up the best I can.

I also keep hand weights under my desk and do some flexibility stretches in my office.

I've considered bringing my bike for lunch hour ride.

First, my gym is only 5 minutes away.  I can leave, blitz through a 30-35 minute workout, quick run under the shower, and be back at the office in exactly an hour.

Second, I'm a guy, so less time to get ready to get back to work.  Towel dry the hair and done.

Third, I can take a few extra minutes if I want.  So I might stretch it out to about 45 minutes if I want.  I leave 10 minutes before lunch and get back 5 minutes after.

I have gone up to an hour on occasion (for a workout), but get a little nervous about that.  Again, I split the difference to make sure I'm not gone for huge chunks of the work day.  I leave 15 min before noon and get back 15 min after 1.

No showers at my workplace, so running/biking are out. Fortunately, my office is a 5 min drive from a public park that has a (nice) pool. I usually have time for a 30 minute swim (1000m or so), which gives me time to shower and get back to the office within the 1-hour lunch period. I'll eat at my desk. Of course, folks around here are pretty flexible, too.

I typically run 3x week at lunch.  I can get in around a 4 mile easy paced run and be back at my desk in an hour.  I use disposable baby wipes to freshen up after and eat at my desk.

I too work in a professional environment.  We have a gym downstairs at my office with a locker room (I feel so lucky now seeing how many people do not!).  I usually work out for 1 hour and do a speedy post workout shower but I do not wash my hair.  I rinse my face, but not my eyes so I do not have to reapply eye make-up.  I use a face wipe for my face and neck.  I dry my sweaty hair so it is not wet.  If needed, I reapply a touch of concealer and blush.  The whole thing takes me 1:15 or 1:20.  I usually work an extra 30 mins 2x a week to cover that time, but generally, my office is about getting your work done and not punching a clock.
