Do You Have To Do Weights To Reveal Abs?

Or can you just swim, bike and run? Also, is it wise to have a high protein, lower carb diet that body builders recommend for six pack abs? Because with triathlon, you need carbs for energy and a low carb diet sounds not like the right thing to do. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can testify that your abs will come out without weights. I trained for a HIM this summer, and I broke my jaw at the peak of my training. My low-calorie, liquid diet left me 7 pounds thinner and my abs showed up. They are there. I suspect swimming helps develop them. My advice is to swim and run a lot, and then stop eating for 2 weeks. LOL |

Generally, for a male you need to get below 10% to get good definition in your abs.but here's the general rule for abs, the more muscle you have, the higher bodyfat you can have while they show. Some people who have done a lot of weights can have them at 11%, while others it might take 8% so no you don't need weights to have abs, but you'll have to get leaner for them to show. |

However here are a few things that I have learned. 1. The lower the body fat percentage the easier it is to show definition (for me the difference between %11 and %14 is huge. 2. I have tried LOTS of different ab programs over the years and I believe that the P90X Ab Ripper is by far the best I have used. 3. Your diet should be an integral part of your workout routine. For me, matching my intake with my workouts gives me the energy I need to train, and the ability for my body to maintain a balanced weight for my body and lifestyle. 4. NO, you don't NEED to lift weights to get a six pack, but if you have extra weight around the mid section it can definietly help. 5. The most successful ab workouts I believe are full core body workouts like ab ripper, yoga, pilates, etc Michael |

The lower the body fat percentage the easier it is to show definition (for me the difference between %11 and %14 is huge. i know the difference for me between 15% to 12.5 -13% seemed pretty noticeable. . i have had a hard time getting below that though. i have been about the same weight and about the same BF% for atleast 4 months or maybe more - despite raising my workout load. i haven't ate super heatlhy (too much processed food, even if it is low fat, or the 'healthy' processed stuff). . and i attribute not having a 6 pack to that. i did notice that weight lifting all winter did make my abs/chest more defined though. then again, so has swimming a bunch. . i do want a 6 pack, but i don't know if i am willing to give up all the great unhealthy food! |

Hence why you can see him pack on the weight in his chest. I believe also that picture was taken out of a Mens Health magazine photo shoot. |

In fact, activities like swimming, biking and running among others are great for conditioning the core as it has to be engaged to keep proper form. |

A lean muscular physique is usually do to following a proper diet and maintaining low bodyfat. Weight and core training can help but is not necessary to develop six pack abs. However, I personally feel I have developed a leaner physique by adding strength/core training x2 a week to compliment my triathlon training. In my opinion, stay away from low carb diet expecially if your training for triathlon. I usually maintain a 60% carb, 20 % protein, 20% fat diet and it has worked for me. You've seen my before and after album and I have dropped over 85lbs. and am now 6% bodyfat so it's worked very well. My best advice to you is to keep an online log of what you eat and over time you'll see what your body responds well to and what doesn't. Take pictures of yourself every 4 weeks to keep track of progress. Cheers! |

Me too but I attributed it to doing gymnastics when I was younger and building lots of core strength that seems to have just stayed. Been a runner for the last four years and didn't worry too much about core stuff. Started one of the plans here on BT with the core strenght wokouts and i've been doing them for just two weeks and they are becoming more defined already. Most of it is on the fitball. The only weight (aside from bodyweight) for resistance is a medicine ball for one of the exercises. Seems to help anyway! |
