Subject: Just got a very nice phone call
I just got a very nice phone call. I was on a century ride this weekend and one of the other riders was a young man who I consider a friend and a business associate. He was a Div 1 full scholarship swimmer and is an outstanding cyclist. I try to convince him to race tri's but he insists that as long as they continue to make weapons and ammo there is absolutely no reason to run, ever, end of conversation.
He called me this morning at my office to congratulate me on the ride. He then, very tactfully, asked if I would mind if he critiqued my cycling abilities. I agreed and this young man went in to great detail about my current riding style on the road bike, how he could tell I should have rode my Griffen, and what I need to do to increase my speed and endurance on the longer rides. I was amazed with his knowledge, his presentation and his tact. Beginning Saturday we start working on my form so that my old butt will become a better cyclist.
He told me that he wanted to talk during the ride but felt awkward about "coaching " someone older and that he didn't want to appear arrogant or disrespectful. I think this speaks volumes about what a fine gentleman he is and how helpful his coaching will be for me.
Bottom line.......share your knowledge folks. We all want to get better regardless of age or experience. Beware though, for if your knowledge is suspect, or just some tired cliches then ..well...what's that they say about "snowing the snowman.
Isn't this why we belong to BT, to help and to get help.

That's cool!

It will also give you an opportunity to work on him for running ... you'll make a triathlete out of him yet!

Your friend and associate sounds like a very nice person.  You are lucky indeed to know him and will benefit greatly from his cycling expertise.

Sounds like a nice guy (and talented!)  I don't really get this part, though...What does the above have to do with triathlon?

Puzzled....

I think it means as long as there are guns and ammo, he won't have to chase his food, and therefore has no reason to run.

Hey cracker...not to play devil's advocate (cause I *never* do that), but it wasn't a Brokeback moment, was it?

"Mind if I have your phone number so I can *ahem* critique your technique?"

Heh. Reminds me of this weekend in Pinehurst. Was driving around with my sister; we kept seeing cyclists. I was pointing out to her what good form looked like and didn't look like. Her response: I think you just like checking out their butts.

Moi?

Well, Renee, she is your sister. (and you are a serial groper/smacker) (and I'm hoping there wasn't a keg in the car)

Duh!  I'm really not usually THAT slow... I was thinking it was some sort of anti-war statement or something... Tongue out

Experience and knowledge doesn't know anything biological age....

I have a coach who has been doing triathlons more than a decade less than me and is about my age... but, he has an expertese in training that I do not have...

Sharing of information is good...

Well, Rob, I don't want to split hairs but I would characterize myself as more of a Spontaneous Smacker rather than a Serial Smacker. I can stop anytime I want to.

Russ - That sounds great to have someone help you with your riding. I guess you can't put anything serious in these threads without getting a bunch of "funny" comments.

On a serious note, I had (still have, actually) a riding partner who was extremely helpful to me back when I had an old, ill-fitting bike, broken pedal cages, and shifters on the down tubes... (in other words, 2 years ago!) He showed me how to ride in a group, showed me how to change a tire, and displayed amazing patience and tact for me when I was completely clueless and in need of some direction and assistance.

The "instructions" continued all last summer, and by the end of the season, I was riding 24 mph on a new bike in a pace line with 8 guys! He still says I was his most improved cyclist....ever!

Soak it all up! Take it all in! Learn learn learn. And lucky you for having found someone willing to share the knowledge! An abundance mentality is what makes this world go 'round.

Whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
