Subject: Just got a very nice phone callI just got a very nice phone call. I was on a century ride this weekend and one of the other riders was a young man who I consider a friend and a business associate. He was a Div 1 full scholarship swimmer and is an outstanding cyclist. I try to convince him to race tri's but he insists that as long as they continue to make weapons and ammo there is absolutely no reason to run, ever, end of conversation. He called me this morning at my office to congratulate me on the ride. He then, very tactfully, asked if I would mind if he critiqued my cycling abilities. I agreed and this young man went in to great detail about my current riding style on the road bike, how he could tell I should have rode my Griffen, and what I need to do to increase my speed and endurance on the longer rides. I was amazed with his knowledge, his presentation and his tact. Beginning Saturday we start working on my form so that my old butt will become a better cyclist. He told me that he wanted to talk during the ride but felt awkward about "coaching " someone older and that he didn't want to appear arrogant or disrespectful. I think this speaks volumes about what a fine gentleman he is and how helpful his coaching will be for me. Bottom line.......share your knowledge folks. We all want to get better regardless of age or experience. Beware though, for if your knowledge is suspect, or just some tired cliches then ..well...what's that they say about "snowing the snowman. Isn't this why we belong to BT, to help and to get help. |
