I'm not sure what my husband was doing but he seems to have missed out on quite a few movies.  The straw came when he was not familiar with "DA BEARS" skits...I mean that was SNL during his 30's!!

He said he was going to be early so that he could get up and ride on Sunday....I say "sigh"....

What are "classics"? The movies a person couldn't miss?

On the other hand - What "classic"/memorable movies have you missed?

I didn't watch any of the Lord of the Ring - it reminded me of my brother reading them when we were kids...I'm not against seeing it, but it's a series that a lot of people have seen...I haven't.

Yeah all the NEW Star Wars movies I've never seen, nor the LOTR or Harry Potter movies -- no desire to see any of them.

I would highly suggest giving LOTR a shot. At least the special additions with all the extra footage. As someone who read the entire series multiple times between 6th grade and now, I can say they did a good job of bringing the story arc into focus and completion. They had to leave some things out but the important things were done. Even if you have not read the books I would recommend them as great movies of themselves as well.

I would add to that list, Titanic. (though I have never seen this movie myself, it never really appealed to me when it came out and I do not care that much to go back and watch a boat sink )

Not that your marvelous new husband needs any support from me, but I never watched much SNL.  While a few skits were really good, most of the show didn't do much for me and I couldn't stay up for the *chance* to catch a gem.

Not a 90's show, but I successfully avoided seeing ET (the movie) until either last year or the year before.

I've seen all those in bold above. Also Snatch (hilarious movie). Titanic, Phenomenon, Michael, Choose Me... I can't even think of them all. SO many... Thing is, I wasn't so much into comedies.

The Princess Bride is mandatory, if only because it is the most quotable movie ever (in fact, even mentioning this movie risks an immediate 8-page explosion of PB quotes).

I like jonathan's list. I've seen all but Tremors. I've bolded the ones I consider true classics:

Austin Powers
Crying Game
Dances with Wolves
Die Hard
Dumb & Dumber
Edward Scissorhands
Fargo
Forrest Gump
Ghost
Happy Gilmore
League of Their Own
Lion King
Matrix
Men in Black
Mission: Impossible
Mrs. Doubtfire
My Cousin Vinny
Pretty Woman
Pulp Fiction
Saving Private Ryan
Scent of a Woman
Schindler's List
Scream
Shawshank Redemption
Silence of the Lambs
Sling Blade
Toy Story
Tremors
Usual Suspects
Wayne's World
add Big Lebowski

Never saw Blair Witch Project
saw Fight Club, but don't consider it a classic.

As someone whose teen years were culminating in the late 90's/early '00 - i tend to go to the teen movies to think of the ones that are 'classic' at least to those in my demographic

- American Pie being the main one - there were many more

Ones that came slightly before me but my slightly older peers insist are awesome and i've seen multiple times
- Singles
- Reality Bites

Those are the ones that pop into my head at the end of a workday - there are more but some really only mean something to me and my friends.

Others I have seen:

Goodfellas
The Green Mile
Braveheart
A Bug's Life
The 5th Element
Jurasic Park

Independence Day
The 6th Sense
Home Alone
12 Monkeys
The Rock
Office Space
Jerry Maguire
Armageddon
Meet Joe Black (only because of Claire Forlani)
The Mummy
Waterworld (say what you will, I liked it)
Hunt for Red October
Total Recall
The Fugitive
From Dusk 'til Dawn
Legends of the Fall (yawn)
Face Off
Con Air
Basic Instinct
The Crow
Pretty Woman
The Sand Lot
Sleepy Hollow
The Last of the Mohicans
Apollo 13
Contact
Payback
Wild Things
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Enemy of the State
Three Kings
Event Horizon (every one said this one was SO scary, I almost fell asleep)
Stargate
City of Angels
Twister
Falling Down
Sleepless in Seattle
Dante's Peak
The 13th Warrior
What Dreams May Come
Thelma and Louise
Rudy
Species (yeah, maybe not so "iconic)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
8mm
The Specialist

You said he hasn't seen many, but I have to say I am impressed by what he has seen (in addition to his recall).  What examples came up, other than SNL, that made you come to this conclusion?

I loved Scent of a Woman at the time - but I tried to watch it again not long ago and it just didn't stand the test of time...

Princess Bride is essential.  "I'm not a witch, I'm your wife! And after what you just said, I'm not even sure I want to be that any more!"

LOVED Snatch.

What about The Usual Suspects and Braveheart?

I'm not a horror fan - but Silence of the Lambs was phenomenal.  Oh - and Clerks.

Blair witch project was quite ordinary, however Blair Witch Project II I found to be quite good for a horror movie, unfortunately you had to watch number 1 for number 2 to make sense.

Tommy Boy would be another one possibly to add to the list if you were into the SNL crew, Chris Farley at his best

I can't argue with too much on here, but I'd also add Chasing Amy, and if the Kevin Smith movies really do it for you, add Dogma and Mallrats.

From the lists I have seen all but the following:

Crying Game
Snatch
Choose Me
Seven Years in Tebet

I would question the status of many of the films listed as Quntisential 90's/early 00's movies.  I always think if dumb comidies, Austin Powers, Tommy Boy, Mars Attacks and Dogma being lead examples.  Teen angnst movies such as Mall Rats, Empire Records, Cruel Intentions and American Pie.  Blow S__t up movies taking up were Die Hard left off with movies like Die Hard 2+, Leathal Weapon 2+, Independance Day, Bad Boys, Men in Black and Armageddon.  Odd movies that mess with you/society like 12 Monkies, Gattica, Pulp Fiction, Contact, Truman Show and American Beauty.  Epics including Titanic, Breavehart, Schindlers List, Dances With Wolfs, Forrest Gump and The Lord of the Rings.  There are the Sci-Fi movies, the new Star Wars (of which only the third was any good), a hand full of Star Treck movies, Jurasic Park, The Fifth Element, Terminator 2 and the Matrix.  I don't do horror movies, but I have to toss in Blair Witch Project.  And then the date movies League of Their Own, 10 Things I Hate About You, Wedding Singer, How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days, and Pretty Woman.

That's what I think of when I think 90's movies.

A League of Their Own

Guilty pleasure of choice... Tom Hanks just nails his part.

Also, "That Thing you Do."
