I'd never calculated my pace until this morning.

What would one consider to be an average to above average swim pace?

Average for a decent triathlete would probably be in the 1:30 range.  Fast would be in the 1:0X range.

Which makes me ...... dog azz slow!

for tris? what distance? ITU guys swim a 1.5K on the 17-18 min range. Pros swim 1.2 miles on 23-25 min or 2.4 miles on 49-54 min.

For AGers I would say above avg is a 1:20-1:25/100 yds T pace (swim avg for a 1.5K)

BT . . . where all the swimmers are "above average".

Well, I swim a 100m in 1:29 if I'm hauling. At least that's what I timed myself at 2 days ago.

I typically come in 1-3rd place in my AG, and I don't swim that fast in a tri. My time typically comes in around 1:45 per 100.

Now, compared to people who are competitive swimmers, that pace is slow. Compared to triathletes, I'm kind of fast.

If you go 1:20/100m, expect to be in contention for the overall podium at your local race.

Exactly.
In sprints I can usually hold 1:10's-1:13's. But my run just doesnt cut it!
Olympics probably around 115's which = 1845 or so.

Exactly!

Sure, I come out 1-3rd out of the water... I slip a few spots on the bike... and on the run... well, with a 11-12 minute mile... well I won't be placing in my AG anytime soon.

My tri swim coach says most triathletes with good form can get to a 1:45/100 pace for a tri and those with some talent can get to 1:30.

I'm hoping some day 1:45 looks possible for me.

OWS and races it is really hard to gauge pace as often the course is not measured very accurately. So you could swim 1:30/100 or 3:00/100 and be a 2:10/100 person in the poo.

I can hold 1:30/100 for pretty much any distance, and am usually near the top in my AG. Having come up from a competitive swimming background, though, I consider "fast" to be sub 1:10/100. The "other" board quantifies it as an Oly swim in <22:00 - I would probably tend to agree with that for tris.

Wow this thread makes me feel slow! (Oh yea, I am slow....no wonder!)  My goal is always to get to 2:00/100m, because in my world anything below that is fast!  (Of course there is nothing anywhere close to a podium finish in my world.... )

Well, in my first tri this year... I swam 2:00's per 100. Oddly, I came out 1st in my AG.

So, I may be fast in a pool, but that doesn't mean I'll hold that speed in OW.

I'm admittedly slow, but I've increased my pace from 3:00/100 down to 2:30/100 with only 5 months in the water. I am hoping to hit 2:00/100 within the next year.

2:00/100 will put you BOP around here ....... in my HIM last year I was 2:08 doing basically breast stroke in rough conditions.  Out of some 250 or so in my AG I was around 190th ......

This year at the same race my "official" pace was in the 1:48 range and I was still well in the back of the pack.

Sucks to be in a fast and ultra competitive AG .......

Well, I've got a super competitive wife (swam for 13 years and had a few Junior Olympic Times, or at least very, VERY close) so she got me from around 3 to sub 2 pretty quickly.  Now, that was for a 400m swim indoors.  I found out quickly that my OWS is much slower.  At least my first one was.  Guess I will find out with my next one.  My goal is to always get below 2.  Now if that is 1:59, I'm happy!

Give me a break Rick, you just sandbag it in the water so you can make an impression blasting past everyone on the bike and run .

'Fast' I know nothing about, but average seems to be more my speed. In last weekend's HIM, out of over 120 in my age group and over 620 overall, I placed right in the middle for the swim with a pace of 1:57/100m. I'm sure that varies from race to race depending on who shows up though. (Edit: they were using 10 year age groups)

It might be interesting to see what a curve of the swim paces at a race looks like. I may have finished the swim ahead of half the field but I think most of those were close behind me while many of those ahead were way ahead.

Well, I did a 5k Ocean Swim race just this last weekend and the winner "Swam" a 17:20 min/mile average. The top 20 were all doing Sub-20 miles.

I however clocked what I thought was a pretty good 30 Minute Mile but was darn near DFL in the race.

FWIW: The vast majority of the field were very competitive USAS and USMS club swimmers and not Triathletes.

Oh, did I mention that this was a "No Wetsuit" race? USAS rules prohibit "Floatation Devices" of any kind and Wetsuits fall into that category.

I dare say these folks are fast

Just for another perspective:

In the Oly I did in early June, here are the times at various percentiles of the overall field (1500m, lake swim, wetsuit legal, approx 200 participants):

top 10%   23:30

median     30:17

bottom 10%  37:34

I'll take a stab at this. At least in my experience as a 45-49 age grouper, you're not doing badly if you hit around 1:40/100 yd. I submit as evidence my races so far this year:

Kinetic Sprint (750M) - 13:42, 1:40/100 yd, 16/35 AG.
Eagleman (1.2 miles) - 35:16, 1:40/100 yd, 89/157 AG.
Mountaineer Intl (1500 M) - 29:08, 1:46/100 yd, 7/20 AG.

Nothing to be ashamed of in triathlon. But it's all relative -- I regularly get my butt kicked by the older women in my Masters group.
