i just did a long ride on saturday, and i had 2 packs of instant oatmeal, a banana, and an energy bar. good to go!

waffles/pancakes with butter and syrup, orange juice, and a banana are good, too.

peanut butter and honey on multi grain bread is another...

Bagels and honey.

A "Belgian waffle with a bananas, pecans, mini-chocolate chips and honey on the inside"accompanied with "an 8oz glass of FF lactaid milk and a granny smith apple" would utilize all my energy in the procurement, preparation and consumption, leaving none for training.

Honestly, Cold Pizza (My preference is with green pepper and Pineapple on it - no meat as I am veggitarian). That with a glass of milk/cup of coffee and I seem to be able to go and go and go and go. And it does have to be cold. It just does not sit well if it is hot or even warm.

Second is waffles w/ PB, fresh berries (whatever is in season) and a little syrup.

x2 in addition with apple juice before just cuz I like it. The waffle and all that stuff in it sounds good after training, before, no way! my stomach would be like a bomb waiting to explode and all that fat consumed most likley won't be utilized as energy anyway...

SweetK - 2009-07-07 2:48 PM I thought about this recently after I had a great longish ride this past weekend where 90 minutes before my ride, I made a Belgian waffle with a bananas, pecans, mini-chocolate chips and honey on the inside and accompanied it with an 8oz glass of FF lactaid milk and a granny smith apple. I had so much energy and power it was unreal. So for each of my longish days, I'm going to adopt this breakfast. What foods give you what you need for that extra effort?

that sounds DELICIOUS !!

I usually can't eat a lot before working out, but before long runs, I would either have:

A) multi-grain english muffin with peanutbutter and honey

or

B) bowl of oatmeal made with fruit and milk

A balance of protein and carbs, very little sugar. The worst thing for me would be a big stack of pancakes or big bowl of sugary cereal. I would feel horrible just starting out and then go downhill from there.

Small bowl of oatmeal, a couple of eggs, a banana, cliff bar

It's the same breakfast every day which is Multi Grain Cheerios with FF lactaid and honey with a cup of coffee.  If it's a really long workout I'll add a banana

PB&J with banana and honey. On a long ride, I carry a spare sandwich. I keep hydrated with water throughout the day, so I like to drink a "flat" sugar free Rockstar Drink. Also, I have been known to mix a bag of frosted mini-wheats and rasins or dried cherries.

Just kidding, well not really actually - I PR'd an hour of power(hour long rowing on an erg) in college after eating a whopper meal deal for lunch...it was one for the recordbooks.  Sorry I know I am not a good influence...

I have a not so funny story about consuming apple joice before a CC race in college, it was hot and about midway thru the race the apple juice turned bad in my stomach... it was not a pretty site...

1h before long training session or race morning: 3 scrambled eggs with tomatoes, ham and onions. Lots of olive oil.

Day before: Pasta carbonara. Mmmmmm. LOTS of cheese and good garlic bacon.

I really don't eat at all before any long workouts.  Even up to centuries on the bike and 20 mile runs - with the exception of taking a gel as I'm grabbing my stuff to get out the door.

For HIM or IM length races however I will have two Clif Bars no sooner than 3 hours before the race so they can almost fully digest.

Before every race, regardless of distance I will take a Gu ROctane at 45 minutes and 15 minutes before the start.
