Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So here I sit at my desk. Been here since 7 am and have already torn through a stack of work. As I start to read the news paper and browse the net I have caught my self wondering what the best JOB for three sporters like us could be. I am the Assistant Director of Admissions at a liberal arts college. It works out pretty well, but I find myslef always wondering what next in this career. Any thoughts out there? Oh yeah the big downsize right now is the commute, 75 minutes. But hey its alright great ideas are born during the car ride! And further more any ideas on what jobs are out there in the sport? Mick |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() well. i am an attorney and in long-hours desk-sitting hell.... but my husband manages a bike/tri shop. which means (1) equipment at cost (to make up for lousy retail manager salary); (2) his hours are pretty flexible (and on a slow day he can get a workout in during the middle of the day! what i wouldn't give!); (3) in-sport connections that have gotten us into more than one otherwise "closed" race; (4) he gets to wear t-shirts and casual clothes at work. okay, so for many that's not such a perk but i get tired of the suits and stocking thing. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a consultant, which also means long hours of desk-sitting, but as long as I put in the contracted hours I can pretty much make my own schedule around my work-outs. Prior to this life I spent almost 11 years in the Marine Corps. 3 hours of PT per week was required by order, although (at most of the units I was with) if you didn't put in 2 hours a day you were not keeping up with the Jones'. What a great deal that was, 'course the long deployments, separation from family, and people shooting at you might turn some people off. Edited by Stake 2004-12-07 10:32 AM |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think that the college atmosphere is great for athletics and training. I wish this school was bigger and offered more in facilities. Being a student was always great for being an athlete. I was focused on a ton of stuff. It was awesome! Nest year I begin med school and I really hope I will have time to focus on school, the lady, and training. Any doctors out there want to chyme in about there experiences?? Mick |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() in my previous life I was an event manager at a state university in PA (athletics, cultutal and student events) very busy and demanding but summers were basically off. In my current life I am a stay at home mom of 2 munchkins - taking them to and from school, speech therapy and their activities - leaving exactly 2 hours a day to train. pros and cons with each life. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yuck, jobs suck. They get in the way of training. ![]() ![]() |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a City Planner/Manager for a tiny town in central NC. It's an 8-5 job with regular night meetings so training can be difficult to work in. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), there is virtually nothing to do here socially so most of my free time is available to train. In fact, it was an attempt to fight boredom and lack of social interaction with people my age (I'm 22) that got me interest in triathlons. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Federal government work isn't too bad - I work at a VA hospital. Strictly a 7:30-4, Monday-Friday schedule. No nights, no weekends, no on-call or any of that. The commute makes a big difference, too. I'm fortunate enough to be able to live just a few miles away, so I have a four minute commute. Of course, if I could have the same hours and benefits working at a tri store... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in the military and as such require to remain fit. My employers provides for an hour of PT every other day, however most don't mind if it is every day. That is time working out and does not count the getting to and from the workout. Not bad, and the base I am on even has a tri-club and a pretty robust gym. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Law enforcement here. Downside...long unpredictable hours, trying to schedule races in around special events, and sometimes working some sort of traffic control while other people are racing. Upside...when working bike patrol, items like helmets, shorts, shoes, gloves, and camelbak were work related expenses. The department also sent me to classes to be a fitness instructor. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Strength and Conditioning coach, athletic trainer, personal trainer, nutrition coach and last, but certainly not least pyschologist for all my clients!!!! Sometimes I wonder if people come in and see me because I'm cheaper than a therapist. Anyway, it works out great, I spend countless hours a week at a training facility! I don't know how you desk jockies do it. Kudos to you |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a nuclear certified welding inspector. The best part of my job is my work hours...3 PM - 1 AM, Monday / Thursday. Gives me all morning for training, then I can go to work and take a nap! ![]() If I could have any other job, I'd really like to be a "mannequin cleaner" at Victoria's Secret. Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() They pay "mannequin cleaners" at Victoria's Secret? Shoot, I've been doing it for free! I'm in the wrong profession... ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a water conservation program manager at a local utility. The pay isn't great, but it's a stress-free job, 9 miles from my house, fun and my hours are flexible. I typically work three 10-hour days. In my other (unpaid) job I help manage a 5-person household where I act as accountant, chef, social worker, nurse, procurement manager and janitor. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a hydrologist (hi, water conservation manager!). No one seems to care as long as I show up between 7 and 9:30 and put in 8 hours a day. Never work more than 40 hr/wk (unless I'm on travel, in which case I don't care). It's pretty training friendly, but I'd like to get paid the same and only work 30 hr/wk, just to see a little more daylight. I think I'll write Congress. ;-) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I work as a network tester for a major telephone company. This gives me zero flexibility on schedule and I live 30 miles from work. Working in Houston and living in Katy, this takes 1 1/2 hours to drive in morning and almost 2 hours home at night. The good part is I have a 1 hour lunch that use to run 3 miles everyday. I work close to Memorial Park that has a 3 mile jogging path and a paved, closed loop for road cycling and several miles of mountain bike trails. On any given night, there are 10-50 riders on the Picnic loop and as many as several hundred joggers on the path. I have 2 YMCA's on my way home for workouts, both have pools, one heated outside and the other heated inside. I also have the best wife that encourages me to stop on the way home to do all this stuff. Sometime before next summer, my office is moving, it will be 40 miles from the house, but I will not have to go into town. I will have to find differant places to workout and play, should be fun. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do the GIS (mapping type stuff) for the National Park Service - Air Resources Division. it means I'm at a desk 8 hours a day. Its an extended internship from school so I'm looking for something permanent (though not as hard as I should be since they keep extending my funding), but it means my hours can be somewhat flexible. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i'm a....umm....uhhhh.....okay better i should say what i've been so far. i'm still trying to figure out what i can be (to make the bucks). i was an engineer working at raytheon, then i was a stay at home mom, then i did consulting as a technical writer (whilst also doing custom window treatments for an interior decorator), then i got divorced, then i was a software engineer for general dynamics, then i became a high school math teacher, i'm also an artist, working on a commission piece presently, but i'm unemployed. i'm thinking of trying to get into 3d rendering and animation, but i don't quite have enough skills...so i'm searching and poking around for ideas of well....what i can be! i have to figure things out fast....real fast!! looking around at training, sales possibilities. i also did a ton of fundraising (back in the day when i was a stay at home mom) and loved it. hmm....that was a whole paragraph. i want to be a one sentencer!!!! ![]() ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Earlier, I wrote: "|I am a policy analyst and would dearly love to get a job in a tri specific bike shop. That would be the best ... I would feel like a child in a toy shop!" I forgot to add that I am over 54 and have 36.5 years of pensionable service so that I will be retiring any time between January and September with a full pension. Working in a bike shope, even for minimum wage, would not bother me. Hell, I would settle for getting paid in tri gear and bike parts! I wouldn't even have to pay taxes on that! |
