Subject: Well that was exciting
I've often wondered what I would do, if anything, if I ran across a snake in an OWS. Never even occurred to me to consider it in the pool until this morning. There was a baby snake zipping along the gutter and the girl lifeguard said no way and backed off so I went and caught it with the pool's net. I know rat snakes, garters, ring neck snakes, etc. This was either a diamondback or a copperhead. The thing was about 5" or 6" long total though, so it was too small to figure much of anything about it. Let it go out back in the woods.

They're doing construction in the back of the pool and I'm guessing they dug up a nest and this little guy found a way into the pool. Should be an interesting few months to go

Great, I should not have read this.  Now I'll be watching for snakes every time I swim.  Living in Colorado means I'm already on the lookout for rattlers on my bike and runs.  Seriously, ever since I heard of snakes coming up through toilet drains I freak out going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.  It's a truly irrational fear.  Embarassed

Rattlers hate water, but they do end up floating down rivers after floods.  Moccassins and Copperheads are the biggest threats in OWS because they're aggressive.  Just one more reason to be in a later wave.  The churn of 100+ swimmers fighting into the water is enough to discourage any critters from staying in the water.

I was in a water obstacle in Quantico, VA and a gunnery sergeant reached with a stick and scooped-up a moccassin just before I swam over it.  He said it was heading toward me.  I was in go mode at the time because the course was timed, but I think-back to how miserable that would've been getting bit by a moccassin with 2 weeks left in training...getting treated and then getting recycled probably.

I just worry about sharks on my practice OWS.  A 550lb Bull Shark was pulled from the water about a mile from where I train. ugh!

Ahhh me too.  I'm also afraid of sticking my hand in a sink full and dishes and finding a dead mouse..but that actually happened once.

That's all well and good, and I know that rattlers don't like water but when your fear is irrational it doesn't matter.  And we don't just have rattlers around here.  And I would have sh*t my pants if I'd had a water moccasin scooped away from me.

Kayaking down a river (that is more of a party/float river) a girl fell off her kayak and started screaming because she was headed straight for a snake.  It was crossing some fairly swift water too.  My other buddy started freaking out and I started hauling towards it because I wanted to get a picture of it.  But it got away too fast.  It wasn't a cottonmouth because they don't go up that far here in Georgia and they do not like fast water.

Snakes don't really bother me.  Usually when a snake hits water, they like to get across it and don't want to deal with anything anyways.  I do remember fishing at my Aunt's 5acre lake and getting my fishing line stuck on a branch.  I started yanking on the tree branch and a huge cottonmouth fell out about 5ft from me.  It looked at me and said "F this" and hightailed it out of there.

I'm really wanting to find a Coral snake one day.

I'm not a big fan of snakes. During a cool morning on one of my cycling routes, it is not uncommon to see snakes 'sunning themselves' on the road.
I am a bit more concerned about bears. They would be a good partner for interval training !

omg this thread is freaky..and kind of hilarious too. That sign is really entertaining haha - I mean, as someone who has never encountered a bear.

I have actually NEVER thought of snakes in the water (or in the toilet...d*mnnn) and if I start to get freaked out I'm gonna cry. Sharks - if I knew there was a shark signting near me I don't think I would be able to get in the water for a LONG time.

However, in SK there are a monster load of jellyfish in certain areas - I was at a youth race (thus not racing) and from 50m from the starting line we could see at least 20 jellyfish. Swimming with those around me kind of freak me out, but I think snakes would probably be worse!

Not sure where you are but odds are it was a type of water snake.  There are many different species all over the US and they are much more common than diamondbacks, copperheads or moccasins.  Water snakes, although essentially harmless, can be very aggressive and because of this are usually mislabeled as moccasins.  As someone mentioned before, diamondbacks are not good swimmers and usually stay clear of water.  A baby copperhead of that size would have had a lime-green colored tail tip that is would use to lure its dinner closer.  Thanks for getting it out of the pool.  I love snakes and would much rather have them around than mice and rats.

"If attacked, fight back. Don't play dead."

That last one made me laugh. I have always found that punching ppl in the nose stops them dead in their tracks. Maybe that'll work against a bear, too.

How can you tell the differance between at Black bear and a Grizzly?

Ans: The black bear climbs the tree to eat you, the Grizz knocks the tree over to eat you.

The sign talks about "human/bear" sightings and what to do, but the sign only describes what to do if you come across a bear in these parts.  What happens if I come across a human and have small children?  What should I do then?
