Subject: Got to ride in a police boat today

To make a long story short.

So I wanted to do an OWS today, and a friend of mine said he would kayak next to me at the local lake.  It’s a typical lake, not a lot of traffic but there are some boaters.  So we take off, not too far from shore, go 30 min out and turn around.

About halfway back a police boat stops by. My friend explains “she’s training for an Ironman that’s at the end of the month.”  The officer says to me, “You’re going to get hit by a boat.” So I point to my friend in the kayak and say “That’s why he’s here.”  The officer says a whole bunch of stuff about not wanting to write up a dead body, how the lake is a non-swimming zone outside of the beach swim buoys, how he writes tickets for this and so on. The only place I can swim is within the buoys, (less than 200 yds across), but he points out that I can “go back and forth as much as I want.”  He says we have to get back and get out.

So he takes off and I continue my swim, since we’re heading back anyways and the only way to get back is to, well, swim.  About 400 yds from the beach he comes back and asks where we’re going, (the beach...), and talks about the whole “you can’t swim here” thing.  Then says I have to get in the boat and he will drive me back.  Wonderful… So I climb in the boat, (over the side, no ladder, good thing I have a lot of upper body strength and don’t weigh a lot).  He sends some wonderful wake in the direction of my friend in the kayak, and we get back to the beach.

Now, my school is having a BBQ at the beach, and everybody there got to see me getting dropped off my a officer in a police boat. Sweet.

I get that his intentions are good, but I mean come on, Really????

Sorry had to rant

Well that was an adventure....

But I have to ask... with the BBQ going on, did anyone get a pic of you in the police boat?

I've wondered where people go to open water swim.  My first lake swim Tri is next month and I was thinking the same thing about the small roped off swimming areas not being worth the effort.

Very kewl!  You'll remember that experience way longer than an uneventful OWS training swim.  You're gonna rock Louisville!

Perhaps the cop was a little too bored out there. Plus he probably wanted to get a glimpse of an iron(wo)man's bod out of the water.Wink

That's funny.  Reminds me of the time the cops pulled us over for speeding on our bikes.

I know the embarrasment you felt. I once had a cop give me a ride home when I had a mechanical on the road. I really hope that when the neighbors saw him pull my bike out of the trunk, they put two and two together and didn't instead think I had gotten myself in some trouble.

I hate when people jump to conclusions about my saftey. You were perfectly safe out there but they just have to dumb it down for everyone.

Doesn't want to write up a dead body, pfft! What? Was he planning to shoot you? Cause you were safe otherwise.

I have to admit, I am on the side of that is actually somewhat cool to get dropped off in a police boat. You can't pay for that kind of bragging rights.
It is weird that he let you off with a warning and then came back when you were obviously swimming back. That is the part that is strange.
As far as perfectly safe, there are A LOT of boat accidents each year. You don't need a license or any knowledge of rules to rent, own or drive  a powered or sailing boat. If the swim zone is only 200 yards long, that does kind of suck, but if they don't have a system for letting people swim outside that zone (flag, bouy, friend in kayak) he is right to warn you.
Glad you are safe either way.

You do in Alabama!  You have to have a boating endorsement on your driver's license....and the test is pretty hard too.  That being said, having a license to operate a boat does not make one safe.  Boaters are notorious for drinking a few beers...and there are no 'lane' or traffic signs out on the lake.  Still, if your friend is right beside you in a kayak, I'd say that was pretty safe.

I did a similar thing with my wife and kids in our ski boat...I only swam about 1/2 an hour but they said it was the most boring 1/2 hr ever.

I think it is cool...but that's me.

I'm in MN and they arrest folks for swimming outside the bouys so I swam today around in circles that took 6' minute to do as my IM is same day as yours. In MA they don't care and won't arrest us for outside the bouys.

Reminds me of last time I was in China with my father, son and daughter, a friend of our who went to MIT had her husband show us around Nanjing. He was a judge in Nanjing so he had a driver who was a police officer. So we were taken around Nanjing in a police car sight seeing. It was great everywhere we went we got out of the police car and everyone I mean everyone stared at us. Harry Potter had just come out and my son was 14 at the time and had similar glasses so he had lots of folks following him and taking his picture..pointing out Harry Potter.

A buddy got a $150 ticket last weekend for boating w/o a PFD.  He had just finished rafting the Green River, taken off his PFD and was sitting on the edge of the raft with his feet on the river bed.  An officer came over and wrote him up.  When my buddy asked about the kids that were swimming nearby, he was told the ordinance only applied to boating.

And THAT is why the state of UT is not running a deficit...

I think that's asinine.  If you were out there in the middle of the lake all by yourself - that's one thing.  Having a kayak right beside you while you swim and he thinks it's too dangerous?  WTF?

I call boredom on that one.

We don't have any marked off areas - but I stay in water shallow enough that boats would have to slow down a lot in order to come close.  (Plus it's not heavily trafficked.)

In upstate NY there was a boat police officer who ran over the crew team's boat while " making the waters safe for folks."  I used to ski for a waterski show and the police boat pulled us over, during the show, while I was backwards barefooting to make sure we had enough life jackets in the boat or some such.  They also pulled over the pyramid while the girls were standing on the guys shoulers, 3 tier ... to check for lifejackets.  Yet another boat cop stopped the ski boat while the skiier was competing in the slalom course.  Like he cut them off and made them stop to check them for lifejackets.  They would be through the course in 20 seconds, but he could not wait that long and had to stop them while he was in the course.  Interesting stuff happens every day.  I am glad that your adventure did not have any real safety issues involved.

All in all it seems turned out OK.

I do wonder though, how the police officer expected you to "get back and get out" when he left you in the water and your friend in the Kayak?  Was the Kayak a two seater?

No exactly crack police work, but he surely meant well.

Don't be silly - she clearly stated she is not an Iron(wo)man yet!

I'm on the side of I get both POVs. If kayaks are allowed, then you should be allowed out there. While I don't agree, I do understand bodies of water that restrict non-motorized usage (Undecided) - kinda the same thing as cyclist+car, swimmer/kayaker+motorboat does not go well for the unprotected.

Aaahhhhh, this is why I love New Hampshire - we're the Live Free And Die state!

Haha, yeah i would have been really really mad if i hadn't gotten the majority of the swim in.  It was really funny when he looked at me like I was nuts.  To me swimming 2 miles continuously in a lake is a totally normal and fun activity. Gotta love IM training...
