Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What is the attraction, I mean who wants to watch a game where people run up and down the field for 90 minutes and then it ends in a 1 to 1 tie... what kind of crap is that? I know there is skill and all but come on, what kind of a sport lets you walk away with a tie... So what is the deal? |

Giver![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There are dead heats in track fairly frequently. It's not common, but not unheard of. I've never heard of it in triathlon, but it's possible. And if it happens, there's no rematch, both atletes are just awarded the same place. trigods - 2006-06-22 1:04 PM run4yrlif - 2006-06-22 12:01 PM trigods - 2006-06-22 12:59 PM ...what kind of a sport lets you walk away with a tie... ![]() | ![]() I've got to admit I used to be anti-soccer. Never played, thought it was dumb. No appeal. Then I got, um, "volunteered" to help coach. After a couple years of coaching it and my kids getting into it, I'm beginning to see the appeal. Like most other sports, once you understand some of the nuances of the game and how hard what they are doing is you begin to appreciate it the way the pros play. The difference is most US kids learn those things about baseball, basketball and football so early on that we think they are part of our genetic code. If you want to try to gain an appreciation for what those guys do another way is to try to play it yourself. It is a WAY more physical game than you might think it is.

Resident Curmudgeon![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris, You obviously possess an unsophisticcated and uneducated point of view toward the game, and causing you to miss the most exciting aspects of a soccer match. Let me give you just a primer, so that next time you watch you will put your focus on where the action is: Next time you're watching, don't focus on the ball. Don't focus on the players away from the ball either, because that's even duller. If you really want to get to the gist of the action within the match, focus on an empty part of the fireld AND WATCH THE FRIGGIN' GRASS GROW! Ultimately more stimulating than the game itself. |

Runner | ![]() While I used to play soccer, I still can't stand watching it. Of course, I also can't stand watching baseball, golf, hockey, any sort of racing, tennis, or just about any sport, on tv. I just can't get overly involved in watching. Mostly be cause I would rather be DOING. |

![]() | ![]() I still think soccer is quite boring, but my boyfriend is a nut, used to coach soccer, etc. He bought a new 50" TV for the world cup. Yikes. I did find, though, that watching a soccer game in HI-Definition lets you see more of what's actually going on. Given that offense and defense are constantly switching (which is what drives most people nuts), there really is a lot of skill and control going on. Try to do an average "tricky" thing you see on TV, it's nearly impossible. I agree you should not be able to end in a tie... WTF? |

Coach![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am a huge soccer fan and played most of my life on competetive regional traveling teams. Having said that, mens soccer can be very boring. Compared to women's soccer or high school teams, the adult men are physically much stronger and physically aggressive and much of the game is just long 50 yard volleys...boring. The action on the ground and near the goal is much more interesting, but in a game where passes are 50 yards long and then it's a jumping contest to get the next touch in which may be a nother 50 yard pass...yes...boring. Go watch some high school or womens soccer for a much more interesting game. Edit: Most of my life means I started when I was five...now that I am in my *yikes* mid thirties, technically most of my life I have NOT been playing soccer. Are you referring to soccer or golf? |

![]() | ![]() AB - I hear you. Recently I went to a tournament game of my cousins (high school state tourney game) and those are some hoss chicks. Very exciting game. Rainy, mud everywhere, pushing, scrapping. Fun to watch. Of course, the game also had some lousy refs. They made the WC refs look great. And my cousins team won the game. Usually its the losing team that complains about the refs.

oneword - 2006-06-22 1:06 PM The ability of hockey and soccer players to change direction... amazing. I do agree that keepaway on ice/grass can get boring though... and a lot of games are a form of keepaway (let's add lacrosse and polo to that list). |

I used to play real polo (yes with horses) and it is anything but keepaway. It's like running consecutive breakaways, except the only defensive moves you have are body checking the other person (with the horse) or blocking his swing with your mallot. It's more like hockey without the icing rule, really. yes I know, another random fact emerges about me. I really do miss playing that. It was a hell of an adrenaline rush. |

Because I am trying to understand the appeal of something I do not like. Maybe, just maybe there is something I am missing about it, that would make it more enjoyable... |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Do you honestly think we're gonna tell you something here that's going to make you a sudden fan? And honestly, my comment wasn't so much about your post as it was about others that I've seen over the last week or so. "Soccer sucks." "Soccer is boring." Great, you don't like it and don't find it enjoyable to watch. I don't like sewing on TV, but I don't make threads complaining about it. trigods - 2006-06-22 5:55 PM DerekL - 2006-06-22 2:54 PM Why take the time to complain about it? I would be impressed if it was Water Polo with horses, but your way... nah had a friend that played water polo at the time and we'd always tease him about that. "I just don't get water polo..... I mean, how do you get the horses in the pool?" |

I KNOW you're not going to say something disparaging about CraftCorner Deathmatch. Lest the Craft Lady of Steel goes all hot glue gun on you. For those who are fans of the Daily Show, the new correspondent Jason Jones used to be the host of CCD. Now, I'm just going to collect my purse and run to Costco. |
