I was just wondering what everyone does in the "off-season"...or do you even have one? Do you train lighter? Do you train just as heavy? Do you get away from training and do other non-tri things?

Since I started training 2 years ago I've never taken an off-season and was wondering who does and what they do!

I usually run marathons in the off season. (Tri Season Spring/Summer, Marathon Season, Fall/Winter)

My last Tri (Carpinteria) is this weekend and my first marathon in is in 3 weeks. (Long Beach)

This has worked well for me but will get interesting next season since my last Marathon is in the Spring (Late April) this year and my last Tri is in the Fall. (Late November)

Not sure if Off Season applies here

Getting this marathon done, and running a 10K in December; otherwise, going to try to really work on my limiter (that'd be the bike).

Off season for me means no tris, about the same training, and maybe some 5ks with the family. It means a whole lot of trainer riding and none on the road during the icy months. I'm doing my first century in a few weeks, though. People say that it takes a few years to reach your fitness in endurance sports, so I've got a couple more to go. No winters off for me.

I'm not taking an off-season. I have running races through November and then I will focus on building endurance in all three disciplines.

Awesome race. Did it back in 04 and would love to make the trek cross country again someday and run it again.

Last year my season (my first tri season) ended earlier than planned and my off-season consisted of PT for knee issues and then lots of work to get back towards where I had been so I'm not sure what a "normal" off-season will be for me.

Off Season is the time when you can get stronger without having to back off for races!

I usually do a fall marathon, then rest the remainder of that month. But this year I had a bike accident in August so it was an early rest, so now I'm going to focus on biking and swimming for 2 months following the marathon, then move straight into HIM and IM training for '09. I'm not sure there will be an off season!

I havnt had an off season yet, but im planning some things to make mine official.

I was thinking about adding 2 days a week of weight training.  cutting back to 2 days a week of biking and 2 days a week of running.  And 1 day a week of swimming.  We will see as winter approachs.

Last year in my off season I started working on my weaknesses as soon as possible.
I was a high school swimmer, so immediatly as the season ended I started cycling daily, starting on the trainer. Also ran with the "long" distance crew on the track season.
My cycling ability had improved immensely from the year before. By leaps and bounds.
At this point it looks like I'll be at Boot all next summer, so that means very limited race oppurtunities-but I'll probably focus more on my running over the winter.

My goal is to stay in good enough shape to be able to jump at any 5K and 10K races that come up over the winter. Those would be snowshoe races.

No bike to speak of and no access to pool means a run-focused off season whether I like it or not. And outdoor-only training means I am *really* hoping I get that Wii-Fit for Christmas so I can at least burn some calories when the weather is too crummy.

Oh, and hiking 10-20 4000' mountains. In the winter. Yeah, that'll keep me busy.

If you don't take some down time or unstructured time you will in time get burned out. Maybe not in year 1 or 2 but in time yes.

I take down time twice a year...sometime in the fall and again after my A spring race.

Off season is a confusing word and has different meaning for many folks.

I find if I don't take off time or unstructured time my mind and body rebel later on. You want to have a good season next year take time off some time. Time off for me will be a week or more with no running, then free and flexible stuff ideally doing no s/b/r in the traditional form we do for tri training for maybe a week then have flexible if you feel like doing something do it for 1-3 more weeks...in that time I try to run 3x a week even 15-30 minutes otherwise I lose a lot. Spring down time is shorter but mentally more important and refreshing for me.

Usually, around mid-November, I'll start to roll back my tri-related training and focus on other types of training.  You can quickly become numb to getting in the pool at 5:30 3x per week unless you get a chance to step back and realize why you do it.

I focus on using the off-season to do weight training and getting stronger for the upcoming season and focus less on maintaining the aerobic endurance.

I'll probably do a marathon and a bunch of shorter distance stuff just to keep the competitive side happy, but nothing crushing.

Off season begines Nov 3, as I should be recovered enough to start the high intensity work done over the next 16 weeks. The off season means crazy high intensity but the volume is lowered. More ROI.

I've never needed scheduled down time away from training, always doing something related to s,b,r.

This is the start of my first "off Season".

I plan to spend the next 4-5 weeks backing off the tri training and increasing my strength training to 3 times per week. The rest of the winter I intend to hammer the swim, bike, run and get faster for next year.

"Off season" is running season for me. On tap are two 10Ks and three half marathons, possibly leading to a spring marathon if that all goes well.

There are only two seasons - ski season, and tri season.  What is this off season of which you speak?
