So when people use these acronyms, is their like a set time you finish a sprint or olympic or whatever distance tri, that determines if you are FOP, MOP or BOP, or do you do it according to the where you place in your AG?

I always figured that it was based on where you placed overall... front, middle, or back of the pack.  I consider the pack to be the entire group of competitors.

People slice and dice the finishing percentages in various ways.  You can cut it into thirds, you can do 25-50-25, 10-60-30.  Whatever makes you feel good and motivates you to get to the next level I say.  You can do this for your AG (bigger races give a better representation of where you stand), or you can look at overall standings.  For me it's just a way to gauge if I've made any improvement and what to focus on for training -- though it's not like it's hard to tell where your biggest weakness is for many of us.

Okay then in that case I'll slice it like this. 60-10-30... damn just missed - FOP!

I look at it according to my AG. Not for the overall field of people racing.

I don't like breaking it up into thirds. I tend to throw out the last 1/3-1/4 of the racers in my AG since they're all newbies on mountain bikes at small tris... =)

So if you're in the 51st percentile you're BOP??  Whoa!  Seems really close to the middle to me...

For me, I tend to look at it 25% / 50% / 25%.  But really, theres no right answer.

Hmm...20/60/20?  That's probably how I see it.  Or maybe 15/60/25...set a little higher standard for the front.  It's all subjective, of course, and I suppose how I look at my results for any given race is colored by how fast the field was--if I was too rigid about it, then some times that would be "FOP" in a lot of smaller races would fall into the "MOP" in a particularly fast field.

x3

I also check to see how I fit in overall AND my AG.  I'm usually better overall than in my AG typically.  My AG is pretty fast.   I could be FOP overall in MOP in my AG.

I've always been lost with these acronyms because I tend to travel in a gaggle instead of a pack.  The gaggle is behind the MOP so I like to shoot for FOG or MOG but hope not to BOG.
  FOP
  MOP
FOG
  BOP
MOG
BOG

Same here.  I'm not comparing my time w/ 30 something guys or 60 something women -- I want to know how I did against women 45-49.  That's the only comparison that has meaning to me.

While the 1/(n-2)/1 and (n-2)/1/1 (FOP/MOP/BOP) is intuitively attractive...

There are usually a few people (FOP) really competing for hardware/top-10.
Then there is a natural gap between this small group of FOP'ers and the people who show up to race with no aspirations of hardware ("The Pack" or MOP) but still capable of "respectable" performance.
Then there is another natural gap separating the MOP'ers from the last small group off the back of the pack.

No, I'm not advocating that a slow time isn't "respectable" but as rich as the English language is, I'm at a loss for a better word.
