I love to fish with my kids and think it's a little more humane to be a sport fisherman and let them go after I catch them versus ripping their heads off, cooking them in oil, and eating them. (I could be wrong though)

You don't have to like it I especially hate them when they try to convince me that the two dogs that are fighting to get into my laps shouldn't be my pets. I hate to tell PETA but I'm my dogs' pet, not the other way around.

Extreme Veteran 3177 | Subject: RE: Don't let your kids become hookers yea, what and idea to tell parents they should not take their kids out to do an activity that maybe, just maybe, the family enjoys doing outside together. I catch and eat lots of yummy salmon. i catch and release lots of little trout, occasionally keep and eat one. seems ok to me... |

It's actually quite a challenge, you have to (well, should) use barbless hooks, so it's not just hooking them and reeling them in. Even more difficult on a fly. Not much worse feeling than watching a trout rise up to your fly look at it, say "hmmm, nope, don't think so" and drop back to the bottom. THe best are what I call LDRs - Long Distance Releases. You set the hook, but the fish works it out without the stress of being landed. Read a study somewhere that said the mortality rate is very low in C&R |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Don't let your kids become hookers To paraphrase Adam Carolla, This is proof that America is the greatest country in he world. I can assure you that no one in Somalia or Darfur is in a moral quandary about fishing. They're worried about finding potable water and about armed militia murdering their families. But no, we're so hard up for actual problems, some of us are concerning ourselves with being cruel to fish. G-d bless America. And as a side note, so, PETA, I guess this means that the whole illegal dogfighting issue is a thing of the past? Shouldn't we stamp that out before we move on to saving the trout? |

(I could be wrong though) I have to admit that I don't get "catch and release". I have thought the same. And this sentence from the article is what my assumption has always been: "But PETA claims hooking a fish and dragging it through the water is no different than hooking the family pet in the mouth and dragging it behind the car." I know we can't talk with fish about how they feel about things, but I would like to know if there's a way to know if fish care/suffer. I am not a vegetarian but it can be hard for me to reconcile my feelings about eating meat (incl fish, etc) and I am willing to admit I am a bit of a hypocrite. But the sport fishing seems needlessly cruel. I am trying to think of another sport that compares. Sure, I have "caught and released" baby frogs that I find the yard, but I don't exactly trap/drag/suffocate them first. Edited by BikerGrrrl 2011-09-22 10:27 AM |

I'm going to botch the example, but I seem to recall reading something about the Dalai Lama building a house, maybe a garden, and the ridiculous amount of time it took to complete because they had to remove the dirt very slowly so as not to harm and ants, worms or whatever living things might have been there. I think that's extreme, but to each their own. I fish, both catch and release and for meat. I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Veteran 344 | Subject: RE: Don't let your kids become hookers I can't believe that I'm going to make this reply my first foray into the world that is COJ - but here I go: To each their own - you can certainly believe what you want. However, I fell like this comes from an imbalance of perspective. One should not be needlessly cruel to animals, but one of their functions on this earth is to be food. You can go the "God" route here and say that's what God intended, or you can go the "evolution" route and take a look at the make up of our teeth - either way points to an intention to eat meat for sustenance. As long as a vegan/vegetarian doesn't think they should eat meat, I'm all for it - more for me, but as soon as that person doesn't think I should eat meat (and thinks I'm committing murder in the process) that goes too far. I'll end with a Lion King reference: it does go back to the circle of life and a lack of understanding of how that works. My vegan cousin was dumbfounded when she found out that farmers actually had to kill rabbits and deer to protect their crops in order for her to have the lifestyle she chose. Anyway - that's my view and since it was free, you get what you pay for. twomarks |
