Subject: Was I out of line?
Okay, so I've been training my *** off for my first Mary, Disney on 1/8. And, because gossip is rampant around here, I'd be shocked if there is anyone in my department that doesn't know I'm doing this. I've also made it quite clear that I don't want/need anyone who is sick in my cube.

So, today, Dolores, a former nurse, comes over and starts to B.S.ing w/ me. After a couple seconds I hear her sniffle and ask if she's sick. She says she is getting a cold and I ask her to leave. She says, "That isn't nice." I reply, "Well, coming into my cube when you are sick, while I'm training for a marathon, isn't nice." She starts to laugh and goes on and on so I say, "Dolores, I'm serious. Leave!" It's not like she was here on business. In fact, she came to B.S. with Ellen, the woman that sits across the isle from me who is out today.

Well, after a few more minutes of her poking fun at me she PICKS UP MY PHONE, puts it to her face, and begins to dial! :0 "What the hell are you doing!?!?!" I ask, ripping the receiver from her hand and reaching for my can of Lysol, which I promptly sprayed on the phone.

You should have seen the look on her face! "Now, leave!" I said.

So, I ask you, was I out of line?

Yeah, it could have been handled a little more tactfully. But that's just me, I'm basically a non-confrontational type of guy.

When do you leave for Disney? Might want to stock up on that Airborne stuff

I agree with the other posts, you should have been more tactful.  Whether she's a peer or supervisor, office politics is very unpredictable.  You may finish your first mary but may not get a promotion or raise or have a job after your next review.

No you were not out of line. You told her once and she didn't listen, AND you've made it known to your coworkers about your situation. I've done the same in my office. My coworkers know I train and can't afford to be sick. They respectfully stay away from me when they are-they call on the phone or email, and drop papers in my inbox or mailbox instead of bringing them directly to me. I also keep anti-bacterial gel on my desk for them and myself to use whenever one person in the office is sick.

Do you guys have sanitary phone wipes? I keep them in my drawer at all times.

I guess being more tactful would have been the nicer way to handle it, but I think you're 100% justified for how you felt about it.  If you were walking down the street and the person walking toward you sneezed, would you start yelling at them about it?  Probably not.  But because you expected a certain amount of, what, consideration or respect from her you went off.  Well you in turn acted without the same consideration and respect you wanted from her.  Lots of people go through life not needing to be considerate and respectful of their co-workers (she is one example).  If you can afford to be like that then you were not out of line.  If you can't or don't want to be like that then I think a quick note/email/comment saying you're sorry you overreacted but it's something really important to you might be in order.

Or you could just key her car and wave a magnet over her monitor screen.

Good luck at Disney!

I probably wouldn't have reacted that way but we're all different.  Usually before I big race when a coworkers comes by me and they're sick I usually say "are you getting sick?"  And then when you they tell me they don't feel good, I usually say "oh no- I hope I don't get sick. I have a big race coming up and I can't afford to be sick."  They usually get the picture without me saying anything else.  They can figure it out too when I guzzling green tea and Emer-Gen-C mix.  I keep Clorox wipes in  my desk and wipe down my desk/phone/stapler- pretty much everything that's wipeable during the flu season.  Most of the people here are aware of trying to not get others sick and we all joke about disinfected our cubes with Lysol and stuff.

Gee… I guess I am just a big meanie!

I did call her to apologize (I even told her I was calling from my phone ). She said she was also sorry because she knew I have been training—She was just bored and wanted to chat.

I guess I should also mention that she is one of my better “friends” around the office so it’s not like I just went off on someone I don’t have a “relationship” with. If it had been my “average” co-worker, I certainly wouldn’t have been as harsh. (Actually, I probably was so hard on her because she is a friend and I knew that she knew I have been training as we’ve talked about it several times.)

In any event, thanks for your replies.

A sniffle, really! Come on, don't you think you are taking this just a little too seriously?

Do you really think she will ruin your race by being near you with a sniffle?

Wow.

Maybe you should spend the next few weeks in a bubble, that should help.

it's just a race

Its his first marathon, "its just a race" to you but to him its much more important. I don't blame you Capt. Jack.

Rest this weekend, drink lots of fluids.

Not "just a race" -heck she was "just stopping to chat" !

just my..opinion , of course.

Thanks again for the replies, folks.

It’s funny, I posted the same thread on a running forum and almost all of them said I was justified in my response—I wonder if they would have responded the same had it been a bike race? (I’m not making fun, as I appreciate their replies just as much as I do all of yours, I’m just curious.) To me, road race or Tri, if I busted my *** for it, it’s worth the response, maybe just a little gentler next time.

I have to say though, madcow, your “it’s just a race” comment was a bit hard to take. But, I guess I asked for it.

Cheers,
Rob

BTW:
Don’t worry, Max… I sprayed the firewall with Lysol so you wouldn’t get any germs. LOL!

Oh... And is Airborne really that good?

Rob,
I'm not familiar with Airborne but if you really want to be conservative try the item below.

Just foolin with ya.  I know how hard you've been training for this race, how well you managed avoiding injury.  Can't blame you for not wanting to be hit with a virus at this stage.

I have to say though, madcow, your “it’s just a race” comment was a bit hard to take. But, I guess I asked for it. Cheers, Rob BTW:

Sorry, I didn't mean to fire off a scud then run but I had to leave. I apologize if that came off harsh.

I'm have to first say that I have never run a stand alone mary so I could be talking out of my butt. But what I meant was after you finish this race and all the emotions of finishing have passed, look back at how you reacted and you decide if it was worth it. No matter how important it is to you right now, when it is all said and done it is just a race.

Again, this could be just me, but when you look at the experience of the race compared to the  dedication you had sticking to your plan, the sacrifices you made to do the training and all the things you learned about training, racing and your body, I will bet the race will pale in comparison. There is nothing anybody can do to from now until race day that can take all that you have gained away from you

Again, I apologize if that came off as harsh, but really you can't walk on eggshells or you won't enjoy all the prerace activities either.

My .01

I don't see anything wrong with what you said or did. So much depends on variables which cannot be conveyed here. Tonality <--is that a word? body language, your relationship with her. She clearly had no concern or care for what you expressed to her, in fact, she made a joke of what you saw as an important issue, when she grabbed your phone. I think you did the right thing by calling her, glad that went well.

Nothing wrong with telling someone to go to hell, as long as you can convice them they will enjoy the trip.

Happy Fn New Year!!!

When I read the first post, I have to admit that I started laughing and I wish that I was a writer for Saturday Night Live. I would create a new character called "Rob, the Germ-Phobic Guy" and I can just imagine someone like Will Ferrel wearing a gas mask and chasing his co-workers around the office with a can of lysol and it would make for some good laughs.

If I worked with you, I would probably start to torment you on purpose---hiding your can of lysol or leaving a wadded up kleenex on your keyboard. All in good fun, of course.

So, yeah, I think you over reacted...but that's just me (cough cough)

BTW, good luck in the race. (Ah-choo!)
