Subject: at T1, anybody sit/kneel down to put on socks and shoes?
I HAVE to wear socks. And I cannot seem to put on socks and shoes standing up. (I wear running shoes for the biking, not clips). and, I have to TIE my shoes, as I did not get shoelace locks in time for the race this weekend.

This is my first tri, and I have practiced the transition many times, and I have watched movies, etc. I just seem to be so wobbly after the swim (I'm good swimmer, and I swim in hard) that my coordination is better sitting down. But everything I read says "don't sit down!".

As you can see, I'm a novice. But my goal is to do this one, learn, and make decisions about what to improve on in the future (biking shoes, etc.)

But for now, any advice on this Transition?

Amy

Usually not.  I strugle sometimes to put my socks on standing in one leg but I manege.  I don't sit because it would take me longer to put socks and shoes on than standing

I've had to.  Sometimes I'm shaky or just couldn't get them on while standing up.  I always try to put them on while standing up, but am willing to sit if I have to.  It's gotten easier with practice.

roll your socks down and when you bend over to put your socks/shoes on, hook one arm over the bike rack in case you get dizzy and need something to hold onto.

I sit my butt right down on my towel, pull off my wetsuit, dry my feet and put on my socks and shoes. I can't do any of that without falling over if I try it standing up. I figure it costs me less time than trying to pick myself up after I fell down than just sitting down to begin with.

There is nothing wrong with sitting down to put your socks/shoes on. If you were a pro athlete or trying to win your age group than that would be different but as a novice and getting through the race and enjoying the experience, do what you are comfortable with.

I normally do not wear socks when I race but did recently for a couple of HIM's. I had no problem sitting down and methodically getting my socks on properly without wobbling all over the place. The few seconds I lost were made up for by doing what I needed to do while maybe catching my breathe for a second before moving on to the next leg.

A friend that I train with, who qualified for Clearwater her first race of the season (NO), sits down to put on her socks and shoes. It is what works for her. The point being, if it works for you to sit, sit.

You gotta do what you gotta do.  There are races where I'll plop down on my butt to change shoes...I've had a problem with cramping up when leaning over to pull on my running shoes (set up with Yankz) and, if I feel like I'm at risk of that on any given day, I won't fight it, I'll sit down.  Not worth trying to conform to what the cool kids do if it actually causes a problem.

whatever works for you go with it! Roll up the socks so you can roll them one at a time and dont have to bend over for very long. Kneel to put them and shoes on...whatever works. I wear my runners on the bike as well (for now!) and I do not sit down mostly because it is harder for me when I sit to get back up. so I do it and pretend I am stretching my hamstring while I do. Whatever you do, just practice it to be as efficient as possible for yourself!

I will most certainly be sitting.....the ONLY cycling shoes that I could find to fit me properly are kinda tricky to get in and out of. Gee.........if it was not for this I would podium for sure!!!

Me too.  I've tried over and over to do it all standing up, but just cannot do it.  I am not gunnin' for hardware so take my sweet time in transition.

My first tri left me so exhausted after the swim I sat down before I fell down!!
I don't see anything wrong with it.  Unless you are trying to make it to the podium - what's an extra minute?  PS The rolling sock is a good idea - I do it too.  Good luck!

For TRIs with a short run (5K), I go sockless and slip my shoes on standing up. use use lock laces on my running shoes so it only takes seconds to get them on and go. For races with longer runs (10K+), I do use socks. They are low cut socks so no need to roll them and only take seconds to put on even standing up.

Earlier this year I read in a thread to put baby powder in your socks to keep them from sticking to your feet.  Works great!

I sit down at T1 to put my bike shoes on and I feel I don't lose any time because I'm far steadier and my breathing is more even. At T2, I leave my shoes in the pedals so all I need is a quick brush of the feet and into my shoes before I take off. I highly recommend this tactic as with a little practice it saves tons of time. One of these days, I'll try the rubber bands holding the shoes up in the pedals.

Back to T1, sit down!

I know when I say this, I may get flamed and re-start the old debate, but here it goes: I am a bucket guy! There, I said it. Love my bucket! I use it to bring my gear to transition, set up my transition nest, then turn the bucket over to use as my stool. I sit in both T1 and T2. I have placed numerous times in my AG and I always sit.

I gave up on putting on socks in T1. I found that I was still wet and as all the water drained into my shoes... my socks got wet.

So now I put on socks in T2. I also tie my shoes.

Why not try switching to socks in T2 where you might not be as wobbly?

I love the bucket idea!! I was thinking I wanted to bring a stool, but don't really have one that wouldn't be a hassle to carry. A bucket, I have. Why is using a bucket a big debate?

The bucket, or portable stool, is a fantastic idea. I'd be faster than standing, for sure, as no energy wasted keeping balance. Plus I have a bad lower back so a stool would be better than bending that far over standing up.

1. Because it takes an inordinate amount of space in transition. In addition to my bike, my transition area consists of a small towel with my running shoes and race belt on it. A bucket would at least triple those space requirements.

2. Because it's not needed. With a little practice, big boys and girls can learn to put on shoes and socks without sitting,

because it is big and gets in the way.

the reason the bucket works for a few people is because only a few people do it.

if everyone in T1/2 was using a bucket, the congestion would be unbearable.

At the last tri I was at (Tri the Creek), I saw one person use a little stool.  As for taking up room......if it fits right on the little transition towel...how can it take up more space?

the more in transition equals more space taken up, this is simple math.

why anyone needs anything more on the ground besides bike shoes and sneakers is beyond me.

I do challange anyone to sit on a stool/bucket and remain in your space and out of the way of traffic while your bike is racked.
