Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() so coming in the next round of sitcoms there are going to be several staring obese characters or an entire obese cast. The focus of the shows will be to improve "fat" acceptance. I dont agree with these shows. I certainly agree that obese people should be happy in their skin as should any1 in any condition but i dont think we should say its ok to perpetuate a life threatening illness. Are the shows gonna show the complications of type 2 diabetes? arthritis issues? cancer? most doubtfully. Maybe TLC should do a new series about teaching drug addicts to be happy about being drug addicts. Am i being shallow CoJ? am i missing something and these shows are really a good thing? (the other poster said there wasnt enough controversy on the boards so i figured this was a good time to pop this quesetion) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How is showing obese people "perpetuating" anything? If anything, they'll be showing a more representative sample of our population these days. Pretending it's not there doesn't make it go away anymore than showing it makes it "ok". |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think it will help perpetuate a sense of complacency about it. Because these people in these shows are happy and proud to be obese and will most likely overly display the "fat and proud" banner. Making viewers more likely to accept their condition vs accept themselves. I dont think the message will come across as the producers hope. |

There is one in particular on the ABC family or some cable network that is going to laud the fat character as the hero, for, you know, being herself... I won't let my dd watch it.... its the wrong message/messenger combo... |

![]() I don't see a problem with featuring obese people on TV. I have a problem with people who watch TV and think that what happens on TV is what happens in real life. If people really are going to emulate what they see on TV...then I suppose it's better to emulate fat people on a sitcom than the drugs, sex, and violence you see on other shows. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We already have the Simpsons and Family guy. Doesnt that count? What about the Drew Carey Show for years ago? I have not seen promos for the shows you are talking about so not sure what the differences are. However if it is a show espousing that you can be fat and fit and healthy then I would have to disagree. If it is a show in which overweight people are happy with who they are and what they do but also shows the complications of such a life, I would be fine with it. If it shows an idealized overweight person who has no health issues ever, is happy with who they are etc then I might have an issue with it, depending on how funny it was (ok the funny part really wont matter). As long as people realize it is TV I think it will be ok, though with attrition rate the show probably wont last more than a few episodes anyway. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I saw a promo for one of these shows. It was a sitcom and it's directly about being fat. It's not that there are fat actors or fat characters. Being fat is the basis of the show. The name of the show is "Huge". When I saw the promo it turned me off, but most sitcoms turn me off. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't agree with you more. The cost of obesity in the US is $147 billion while smoking cost is $92 billion. The FCC has limited the depiction of smoking on TV since they feel it "glamorizes" an unhealthy behavior. It does seem they should take the same approach to obesity. That being said, I don't own a TV and we're all visiting this website. I have a feeling we're "preaching to the choir". |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So do you also have a problem with the sitcoms that show binge drinking, sleeping around, drug use, low moral choices all around....? Does watching a specific television show with fat/skinny/addicted character mean that you are perpetuating that lifestyle? Does me watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia mean that I support becoming a crackhead to get welfare, or eating cat food to sleep through the night, or stalking waitresses? I'd love to know which shows you watch, to see which lifestyles you agree with perpetuating. If you didn't get the sarcasm, I am SURE you aren't railing against other shows that don't show all the consequences of whatever actions the skinny characters take. So what is it about fat people that bothers you, exactly? In a word: yes. You are shallow. |

For real. Next they will be saying that ALL women don't look like the models in advertisements... |

I do have problems with those types of sitcoms, but I don't start threads about them. I will talk to friends and family about my issues. Only ones I watch with any vague sense of regularity are The Office, 30 Rock, and Modern Family. Of course those are on in the evening and are not on ABC Family (unless they are in syndication I guess) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You know I spend enough of my time and energy on keeping my own "stuff" together and living my own life. I don't have time to worry about what other people are doing, eating, or thinking much less what they are watching on TV. Live your own D@mn life and leave others to live theirs. |

For what it's worth, I did the test on Facebook and my Jersey Shore nickname is "Muccle Milk." That is all. |

This is the show I was referring to - the ads are targeted at kids during Miley Cyrus' show, etc. basically it seems to be of the ilk of "Its okay to be fat..." |

![]() | ![]() I pretty much hate all TV now. You can add these shows to the list I suppose. Obesity is a health epidemic, we need education - something, I don't have the answer. I'm siding with Jamie Oliver before I would celebrate the problem though. Universal Sports and Versus are about the only channels I watch now. HATE reality TV and walk away from people when they talk about it.... Office Space, River Monsters, Lie to Me, and Numbers are about the only shows that make me sit down and watch. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TV stereotypes crack me up. On the spanish channel there is a show called lazy town.....they sit around and be lazy all the time. Just seems wrong. |

I think this is more in line with what i was trying to say. I have no problem with obese people on tv i have a problem with glorifying it as other posters have said. I do not watch tv, i watch true blood on sundays with my mom as family time. I disagree with the imagery that most shows depict, this one just happens to be a better topic for a tri forum. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TV shows are produced to attract viewers so that TV corporations can sell air time for commercials. Which companies are going to advertise their product in these timeslots? I saw a commercial the other day for something akin to body glide being marketed to the general (overweight) population. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's more realistic than all the fat dopey husband/skinny hot wife shows, no? That said, I know nothing about this show. Most TV is awful. But I love House... |
