Subject: Thinking of getting a small SUV- any recommendations?

I took my 4Runner in for service today and saw the new RAV4 and ended up test driving it and a highlander.  Now I'm thinking of getting a new car and looking at reviews etc.  Just curious what cars BTers would recommend.

My criteria are that it needs to fit two adults- one who is really tall, a child in a car seat- preferably in the center of the backseat and a Labish dog in the back.  I would put bikes either on the roof or on a hitch mount- would prefer the roof.

My wife really would like to have her Mazda Tribute back that was destroyed by an idiot driving through a red light.  Prefers that over her Jeep that she has now.  More headroom for me in the Mazda also and I am 6'3"

I rent a car every week and have driven most of them (except Honda who aren't in fleets).

If budget were no object: Mercedes GLK. Awesomely appointed and fun to drive
If budget were large: Ford Edge. Just great to drive, very comfortable and luxurious.
I used to like the Ford Escape, but don't know the new model
Chevy Equinox is a great choice, but I have no idea of price.
Best value: Nissan Rogue. I bought one based on a good rental experience. $23k delivered if you negotiate right. Does everything well.
One I wouldn't buy: Mazda CX-7/9. Poor build quality and not well built.

RAV4 would be low on my list. Too expensive for an average vehicle.

The Toyota Prius V fits all of your criteria.  We like ours (I'm 6'2, we have two kids in car seats, and a 70 lb dog).

My Thule bike rack fits just fine on the roof.

My wife and I have a Hyundai Sante Fe and a Ford Edge.  We're both tall, I'm 6'6" and she's 6'1" and we have a 18 month old in a car seat.  Both cars have enough room for us, usually she's in the passenger seat with the kid facing forward behind her, there just isn't enough room behind me in the drivers seat in any car besides maybe a Tahoe or something.

Sold my pathfinder and got an edge last September. Very roomy inside. Ok to decent gas mileage. Bike fits easily in the back or I have a both mount. Very comfortable car

I have a Honda CR-V.  Great gas mileage (~26-28 in mixed driving).  Comfortable, and I can lay down the back seats and fit my bike inside without having to remove a wheel.

I love my RAV4, bought a 2007, the first year after the body-style change, and have put almost 100K miles on it, no problems, only oil changes and new tires. Great triathlon car, bike fits in the back without dis-assembly and only 40% of the back seat down. Get about 25MPG in heavy-footed mixed driving. If I had to buy again today the RAV4 would be my first choice.

Been a while since I shopped but at a glance the MSRP on the RAV4 is only a few hundred more than the Rogue, conceivably you could walk out with either cheaper than the other, depending on the dealer. Why would one be "best value" and the other "too expensive for an average vehicle"?

True? I thought the RAV4 tracked a couple grand more. If that's the case, buy your preference. At the same price, it would be a toss up.

I love my CX-7 but am admittedly not a "car person."

I really like the way it looks and performs (have the Turbo option). Easy to fit 2 bikes in the back with the seats down, or 4 adults + Ironman gear with 3 bikes on a hitch rack on the back. No complaints in the 2 years I've driven it.

Wifes drives an 07 Escape (Tribute was same car), it is great. No problems, 25+ MPG, plenty of room, not to big or small....

I echo a previous comment though the 2013 had a platform change, dont know if it is still the same all around great SUV.

Thanks!  Some great ideas.

I'm going to have to check out the CRV and the new escape /edge.

I looked at the Prius Wagon one- but I need a little more ground clearance.  I sometimes am curb challenged Tongue out and drive a lot of dirt roads.

I tried an X3 too which was pretty nice and despite my not being a high end car person fit my goals pretty well.  I was surprised how the bottom end package included a lot of the markups on Toyota and the price delta for a similar car wasn't really that big (esp with 4 years of maintenance included with a loaner car.)

I've kinda done this same thing.

Had an Audi S4 Avant (wagon). Cargo box and bikes on top. Great car and I still miss it. Out grew it as miniMagic got bigger and we got a large'ish dog.
Picked up a Jeep Grand Cherokee used but fully loaded. Had a few issues I knew going in that I fixed, nice to have more room inside. Still needed to store bikes on the roof or remove wheels to fit in.
Picked up a Honda Element. Fantastic lifestyle car, bikes fit right in, dog loves it, kid loves it, easy to drive, nearly impossible to get a speeding ticket in it, AWD, low to mid 20's MPG, no issues and going on 100k miles. Great ski car too. They are gutless wonders and my man car card takes a hit, but a box on wheels with tons of room and a Rubbermaid interior matches my life style. Plus I still have my Honda CBR for go fast time

I've really liked my VW Tiguan. And a couple of friends have the VW Touareg. Both really nice vehicles.

Outback!  Wife drives a 2011 and it's great.  25+ mpg may not match the CRV and RAV4 which are both nice, but it is a bit bigger.  We looked at the CX7 and Mazda5 when we bought the Outback and preferred the Suby for the way it drove and layout.

just bought a Honda CR-V   love it. Lots of room. Fun to drive. Will have no problem putting the back seat down and fitting a bike in the back. You can even have a roof rack put on it as an add on ( If I remember right ).

Great car and Honda are very easy to maintain.  It is wonderful in the snow to. Got to try that out first had last weekend with 30+ inches of snow.

Think I could even put two bikes in side without a problem. But my tri-bike has 650 wheeles and I could put it in the trunk of my Honda Accord without taking off the wheel ( With the back seat down )

Find a nearly-new RAV4 with the 3.5 V6. Lots of power and still good fuel economy.

We have a two year old Venza. Get the AWD six cylinder. Decent fuel economy and it handles great in snow or on wet roads.

LOL... I posted earlier to look @ RAV4 V6 because you said small SUV. But I actually have a Venza V6. The car is great. It has more than enough power. Freaky how fast it is. Gas mge is good too.

Happy hunting.

We have an 08 mercury mariner which is a twin of an Escape. 2 kids and 2 adults with a roof rack and there is enough room for a cross country trip with bikes on top. Usual mpg is 23 with the V6 however loaded for vacation with bikes it goes down to 17-18mpg. I also have a 00 for excursion for the cargo room and to pull the camper, that is a total beast, but a V10 will take you down to 11 mpg normal driving and 8 mpg towing a 27 foot camper.

I had the same criteria when I went car hunting last year, except I have two kids, 7 and 9. My choice came down to the Subaru Outback and MINI Countryman. I went with the Countryman and have been very happy-- it fits everything, its AWD, gets decent gas mileage (25mpg) and draws looks all the time. Nice mix of sportiness and practicality.

We have 3 kids so we had to get rid of our Nissan Xterra cause the car seats physically wouldn't fit all 3. But with all the cars we've had that has been our favorite.
