Subject: Bucket?

I read somewhere that you should bring your transition items in a 5 gallon bucket.  The bucket is easy to carry and you can sit on it to put your shoes on.  I did this for my first two small races and it worked well.  I read in a BT thread that you shouldn't bring a bucket.  I have my first co-ed race this weekend and I don't want to embarrass myself by bringing a bucket if I shouldn't.  I will be embarrassed enough by my athletic ability, I don't need to add to the pain.

What are your thoughts on this?

Will the bucket scream "newbie" or is the bucket pretty common at races.

Not common.   Won't necessarily scream newbie.  As PennState said, if you are comfortable with it, don't worry what others think.  THere are (IMO) however better ways to bring stuff into transition and set it up

yes, but not as badly as this will if you tie it to your transition area:

Fred's on a roll

Hello Kitty balloons are cool, however.....   right?

I don't understand why people hate the bucket so much.  People get on these threads and say how much they dislike them, they are contreversial, etc. but I still don't know why.

Army downsizing at its finest!

On a serious note I have seen people with buckets at races before...not necessarily using them to tie there shoes, some use it to wash there feet after the run to Transition from the swim...Others do no like them because they appear to take up a lot of space are large enough that if someone knocked it over and it DID have water in it, it could make a mess of someones transition area/stuff nextdoor. Just my thoughts on the subject...

They clutter the transition area and make it dangerous for other athletes trying to make their way through transition.

Lots of people bring buckets, mats and other accoutrement.  IMO they are mere clutter.  keep your transition simple.  You usually dont have much room and tons of stuff just create a mess.  That said, you can use a bucket as a substititute for a bag to carry your crap in.

What should one bring to transition?

towel (to put things on and possibly quickly wipe feet on!), running shoes, cycling shoes, bike, helmet, sunglasses, hat/visor, wetsuit, and race number belt.

And some of those are optional (towel, sunglasses, hat/visor).

Yup. That is truly all you need. Most of that can be worn in or brought in on the bike. I also have a small bag I stash in the middle for morning/after clothesdon't forget cap and goggles

So far I am underwhelmed with this bucket thread.

Can I have some with butter and salt, please?
