OK.  I get it.  Thanks for sharing.

How about this.  I will take my bucket for my little 200-300 person race this weekend until I get used to the transitions and figure out how to be quicker with my shoes.  If my race is crowded, I will toss my bucket aside for the good of all racers.  I also promise I will downsize and not take a bucket for any big races.

PS - I also cancelled my order for the 3 foot Princess balloon that I was going to tie to my rack.  (I'm KIDDING!  I was NOT considering a balloon!)

Sort of feel for the OP - a newbie - who likely researched triathlon transitions and came across numerous references to a bucket (as I did when I first started!).  We lay in wait for the opportunity to have a good laugh

I *have* seen people throw their stuff in a bucket or little Rubbermade square pail and then flip it over to sit on during transition - but I'm also sure I read in one of the race rules book that that particular race prohibited it.  You may wanna check and as some posters mentioned above - it could take up a lot of space.

If you would feel more comfy bringing it with you - go for it!  My first race was so wet and mushy by the time I was done the swim - I didn't care and just fell into the grass to put all my stuff on.  You might wanna still bring a towel to lay your things out on - organize your area - or even a garbage bag in the event of wet weather.

Good luck with your race!!!

Bucket

LOL, I love a good bucket thread.

In all seriousness, see the pictures below:

Transition Area

For anyone that doesn't know, the bikes are squished in pretty tightly in transition.

If you do use a bucket, your transition spot will probably look similar to this:

Too Much Bike Clutter

Personally its too much clutter for me, but to each his own.

Hey ~ AZ Sunshine ~:  Some thought on your posts that might help:

  1. You mentioned wanting to be faster at transitions/getting your shoes on.  Not sitting will help with this.  Place your shoes on the edge of your T area, with the tongue out of the way and untied if you prefer to tie/retie (I just slip mine on).  Stick your socks in each shoe, facing the right direction.  Might want to practice this.
  2. To rinse your feet after the swim, I recommend using a water bottle (instead of a bucket or tray of water).  You can squirt the water which will more quickly get rid of sand.
  3. I prefer using a backpack to carry my things, because sometimes the transition area is far enough away from my car that I can ride my bike.  Using a backpack is easy.  Carrying a bucket is hard.

The space that a bucket takes up is no more than my giant TYR transition backpack, but it's less flexible.  That's why I use a backpack (without the emphasis on not using a bucket).

All that said, you won't be the only one with a bucket if you decide to go with one still.

In all seriousness, see the pictures below:

I've never ever been allowed this much room for my stuff in transition. Typically, racers are expected to put their stuff under the wheel that is off the ground - not to the side. If everyone put their stuff off to the side taking up the room of another entire bike, there would be no room for about half the racers. Look at that diagram - the stuff literally takes up the space of another racer. Maybe it is not to scale... but it's misleading for sure.

In the case of racks that sit ON the ground, a space to either side is fine, but the bikes are usually staggered (one front wheel in, the next back wheel in) so you have that space beside you to put your stuff.

Guess it depends on the race, and each one is different. I've never had a race where I had to put my stuff under the wheel of my bike. I have also never done a race without racks. Even where bikes are right next to eachother, the handlebars require the bikes to be far enough apart that there is room between them to put a small towel, with plenty of room to line up my shoes, etc. I love that bucket pic though. Not only a bucket, but a nice grocery store paper bag transition bag

I read somewhere that you should bring your transition items in a 5 gallon bucket.  The bucket is easy to carry and you can sit on it to put your shoes on.  I did this for my first two small races and it worked well.  I read in a BT thread that you shouldn't bring a bucket.  I have my first co-ed race this weekend and I don't want to embarrass myself by bringing a bucket if I shouldn't.  I will be embarrassed enough by my athletic ability, I don't need to add to the pain.

What are your thoughts on this?

while volunteering a couple of years ago in t2 I got to see the pro's transition area.. then as the racks got further to the back the amount of stuff increased greatly.

The pro's had ,race belt, hat, shoes.  I think on one of the way back racks someone brought a portable generator and mini fridge

If you have a med size backpack that will allow you to carry all of your stuff, and ride your bike at the same time.. if you park a ways from transition you will be pushing your bike with one hand and carrying your bucket full of stuff in the other..

granted you won't have something to sit on, but take an evening and set up a mini transition at home.. bike about 10 min, come back and practice your transition then do a short 3-5  min run, and keep repeating it..
don't think of it as brick training, but practice getting into the bike shoes, then out of ,, then regular shoes on..

You could really do this without the actual  biking/running  and as silly as it sounds (or looks)it will help you a lot... transition are really a place where you can get some free speed,,, most likely you have trained in s/b/r  so working on transitions is just training also.

I've had the neighbor kids hold out water bottles so I could practice grabbing them and other silly looking stuff, but it helps come race day...
