Extreme Veteran 456 Western Massachusetts | Subject: Race Day = 1st day of Period **** Men Be Warned: TMI ***** Ladies, I have one day of the month that I'm bleeding heavily and have very low energy. I usually take to the couch in a malaise. Sadly, that day is projected to fall on the day of my Very First Triathlon that I've been training for non-stop for six months. What should I do? My second Triathlon is scheduled for 28 days later. :-( Gwendal |

Pro 5153 Helena, MT | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period If you're on the pill, you could skip one month's placebo pills and just not have your period. Pretty widely accepted that that's a safe and ok thing to do, though you may experience some spotting at some point. |

Just the title was enough for me to wish for a "Women's Only" forum. Figured here was as good a place as any to make that comment. |

Expert 738 Alabama | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period I also suggest the pill idea, worked for me but just don`t make a habit of it. Go see your dr, ask about extra iron in your diet or taking iron supplements during that time of the month to help you with the low energy. I would just go see my dr and ask for any help he/she can give to either delay or stop your period for that month. Make sure you also talk about the extremly low energy, let him know what you are planning on doing and why you want to do this. good luck, and good luck with your first tri! |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period Oh no!!! You edfintiely have my sympathy. Maybe you should spend a lot of time with friends who are "earlier" than you so you can hop onto their schedule? No really, that always happens to me since I'm not on the pill. I find that one or two days into my period I gain my energy back and feel great. I hate doing a race the week before my period- I always feel so blah! If youu're on the pill, maybe you can start the next pack as soon as you finish the other one? I think you can do that...not sure though. |

Elite 2468 Racine, WI | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period Don't feel bad, I'm right there with you. I'm due "any time this week" and my A race is Sunday I can't even stay in the same room with hormones much less take the pill. I'm hoping the excitement will get me through the low energy. I've learned that once I get moving I'm pretty much ok. And I guess my transition times are just going to suck. |

When I saw the thread title, and the fact that you were the last poster, it immediatly put a smile on my face and I thought "oh, this is going to be amusing". Maybe, but I was serious. Other forums (e.g., Runner's World) have Women Only threads, you guys really do have some issues that you need to discuss without us, and we would definitely prefer it that way. I would have some concerns that it would somewhat split the community, where the ladies would just hang out there. I think a lot of that happens over at Runner's World, there are posters in the Women's threads that you never see in the general population. |

Expert 1099 Orlando, FL | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period Hey Gwendal: If you don't want to mess with the hormones you might try acupuncture. There are some points that can specifically stimulate the uterus, as well as some herbs - should only be attempted with a good DOM (Doctor of Oriental Medicine), however. Good luck! Annabanana |

Extreme Veteran 456 Western Massachusetts | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period runnergirl28 - 2005-07-19 3:09 PMOh no!!! You edfintiely have my sympathy. Maybe you should spend a lot of time with friends who are "earlier" than you so you can hop onto their schedule? No really, that always happens to me since I'm not on the pill. That's how I got into this mess... but I doubt it'd work now since I work alone and even my teen-aged daughter is out of town for the next two weeks. I find that one or two days into my period I gain my energy back and feel great. I hate doing a race the week before my period- I always feel so blah! My weight always goes up the week before but I don't really care about that. My emotions are a bit suspect but nothing too awful anymore. My big problem is just that ONE DAY when all I want to do is lie around doing nothing. It occurs to me to break out the big guns: dark chocolate. If youu're on the pill, maybe you can start the next pack as soon as you finish the other one? I think you can do that...not sure though. No pills - my method is fidelity to a snipped man. I spent years with an IUD with lots of bleeding for a whole week, but now it's only really heavy the first day and pretty manageable for three or four more days afterwards. (The energy dip is just the first day.) Doesn't anyone else have this pattern? What do you do when circumstances won't allow you to hang out on the couch? Gwendal |

I'd never thought of that before. I keep meaning to talk to an acupuncturist about some tendonitis I can't kick. Maybe this will get me off my butt and make me go find one. Gwendal |

Maybe here, men will find they are being treated to an education. Maybe we can provide some insight, understanding and bridge gaps of misled conclusions. One can say the same for a person who is depressed, should we have a 'depressed only' section? How about a umm...with 'children only'? That way others don't have to be impeded with threads of learning about dealing with kids and triathlons, eh? I think its great that this forum allows people to speak freely AND be exposed to paths of understanding they may not know to travel. although i would vote for a 'bullies only' just for you bear. |

Veteran 175 | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period Check with your doc about skipping your placebo pills. As someone else mentioned, you still might breakthrough/spot, but it should get you by without the heavy flow. Don't forget about your next tri in 28 days though, this might get tricky! Long term, a Mirena IUD might be the ticket for you--most patients will virtually or all together stop having periods. Rob--uncharacteristically talking shop in an attempt to help Gwendal. |

Extreme Veteran 586 Waterboro, Maine | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period We have had this discussion before. It is the risk of being a superwoman! Some practical points - wear black - it won't show any leakages. Wear the biggest tampon you can stand, and maybe throw a pad in at T1 or T2. Practice this at home first until you can do it discreetly. And finally, don't worry about it. If a little blood flows, so be it. You won't be the first! I am 43 and my periods are very heavy on Day 2 and Day 3. I feel lethargic the week after my period, but actually feel pretty energetic the other weeks. During my first tri, I was "on the rag" and my tampon held for the 1:37 of the race. As I was hanging around drinking the black coffee which Starbucks was handing out after the race (what's up with that?), I could feel it start to leak. Since it was a Danskin tri, I explained the situation and cut in line at the outhouse! The other women were all smiles and knowing looks. You will be fine! |

Giver 18427 | Subject: RE: Race Day = 1st day of Period At the risk of getting flamed incessantly, you could always just go and get knocked up.... But seriously, my wife experiences the same thing on her first day and had the same situation leading up to her first marathon. She did start that morning, but still had a great race. She just prepared herself mentally for it, and I guess that got her through. |

I want to know what the other half is experiencing, and the trials and tribulations of the male gender. Jodi |
