Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: OCT: HELP MAKE BT WARM AND FUZZY CHALLENGE! All righty boys and girls. Tom’s (madcow) thread in COJ about this subject got me thinking. He’s got a great point about how some of us could do a little better job of welcoming new members in the Introduce Yourself forum and also commenting on Race Reports. I know I am someone who could certainly divert a little time from COJ into those other forums! Someone else recently mentioned that BT has become insular. I remember when I was just a BT pup the thrill I got from feeling included into such a great community. I’ve gotten to know a great group of people and I communicate regularly with them but that has come at the expense of time spent making newcomers feel welcome. This is an attempt to right that ship. I hope many of you will join me in this.
I’m proposing an OCTOBER CHALLENGE. First, find your statistics. Click on your name and then click on ‘see user statistics’. Scroll down to the bottom and copy and paste this graph or just type your numbers here. For example,
I’m 209 in Race Reports and 31 in Introduce Yourself. Next, challenge yourself by proposing how much you are going to increase your posts in each category during October. Now, some of you may think there won’t be many race reports in October to do. I think there will be plenty of new reports to comment on, but there is no reason you can’t go back to some reports from this summer and post comments.
At the end of the month we’ll all repost where we are and see how everyone did. I want to make sure to emphasize something here:
***THIS IS ABOUT QUALITY – NOT QUANTITY!***
Estimate your # of posts based on how many quality, thoughtful comments you will be capable of posting. This is not a number contest, even though that is one way we are measuring it. We don’t want a bunch of “Great race!” and “Welcome to BT” comments cut and pasted over and over. One thoughtful post, personalized to speak to a person’s specific concerns, interests, etc. will have more of an impact than a hundred “Way to go”s. (I just noticed I keep saying “we”. I think the voices in my head are getting louder.)
Anyway, I’ve always been a believer in karma and good things come to those who do good deeds. I’m not making any promises but I’d be a big fan of someone who makes an extraordinary effort to help make BT a little warmer and fuzzier for newcomers. J Even if you don’t participate in this challenge every once in a while try to do a little to make others feel welcome here.

I, CitySky, will add 30 meaningful welcomes to Introduce Yourself and 20 non-generic comments to race reports... this is by the end of October, right? (By the way, I'd estimate that about 1/3 of my COJ posts were in the past two weeks... guess who's leaving her job on Friday? Whoops!) |

hehehehe! I already do most of my posting in RR. Although, yes I have a confession, I am bad about just doing the "way to go" or "great race" thing. I figure I just like it when someone reads my report and they make any comment. Just to know I'm loved. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! So that's kind of how I reciprocate. So here is my goal. 32 RR comments to bring my total to 270 and 18 introduce yourself comments to bring the total to 30. And I raise my hand and promise to be more thoughtful and personal with my comments. Good challenge! Diane PS I know I am owing a couple of Ohio people some RR comments that I will get to tonight or tomorrow a.m.! Edited by drdi 2006-09-27 5:40 PM |

*8*? Do I really only have *8* Introduce Yourself posts? Wow, I suck at welcoming new folks. This shall change in October. I pledge to quadruple my IY numbers by posting another 24 in IY. In addition, I'll post in 20 race reports and pick 5 people in Tri'ing for Weightloss to Inspire on a regular basis. |

I pledge 25 posts for Introduce yourself and 10 for race reports. Maybe I need to spend more time in COJ too. |

I know as a newbie that I don't know what to ask or I may see answers like "ride more' Swim more". I know this is true buuuuuuuut, How about trying a short term mentoring type program for newbies. something like: Newbie ask for Mentor/s Mentor looks at training logs and and makes suggestions on how to get better with a little more than DO MORE. If this is out of line for this location I am sorry. Brian |

Brian Definitely not out of line, if no other more experienced triath comes forward i will be glad to offer my opinion and or knowledge whenever you would like/need. We all are newbies at one time and the best way to grow the support group is to start with the newest members like yourself. By the way, where are you from? |

Master 1362 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: OCT: HELP MAKE BT WARM AND FUZZY CHALLENGE! Excellent idea! I've only been on board for about 2 months and I felt welcomed right away (ironically mostly by other newbies). As I posted more and got to learn some personalities I've managed to connect with others as well. Here are my stats:
I commit to 2 more Race Reports posts (I'm too new to make anything honestly worthwhile since I haven't raced yet myself - kind of odd offering loads of meaning when I don't know what I mean... know what I mean? haha). And I commit to 20 Introduce Yourself posts. As a newbie its easy to type these up since I've already seen dramatic changes in my fitness levels and waist line in just 8 weeks. Thanks for pulling this together hangloose. |

Elite 3489 Lakewood, CO | Subject: RE: OCT: HELP MAKE BT WARM AND FUZZY CHALLENGE! Sounds like something good. I was just noticing this week a number of race reports in the last month with either 1 or fewer comments on them. 20 x 20 sounds like a good number. It sure seems like I have posted more than I have.

OK cool deal, I'll give it a shot for 20 and 20, even though I did notice that my appearance on the Race Report board is pretty high up there. I'll try and visit the reports of people that I haven't met before!

Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: RE: OCT: HELP MAKE BT WARM AND FUZZY CHALLENGE! Thanks for jumping on board everyone. I didn't mention how many I would do myself. I go back and forth between a lower number to go for quality and a higher number fearing I'll get too automatic with my comments just to reach a number that really doesn't matter. So I'll go for 25 and 25. By the way, there are many times when "Way to go" or "Great Job" are perfectly acceptable posts and I do not mean to disparage those. We are just concerned about a fresh flood of seemingly automatic responses and don't want to appear fake or insincere to those receiving these posts. One more thing - if you can, get the word out about this challenge by letting your BT peeps know about it. We all have groups that we "speak" to and not everyone is going to see this thread on their own. Thanks.
