Subject: The "ideal" physique for a triathlete

In every sport, the one thing that no person can train is their build. I am talking about height and frame size moslty.  What would experience tell us is the "ideal" size for the multiple triathlon disciplines?  I am new to the mulitsport game, but from what I have seen,  small and light works well....But what do I know, you tell me.

Matty Reed is 6'-5" ...... doesn't seem to slow him down any!

(If you don't know who he is, he is an ITU pro triathlete from New Zeal. who is now a US citizen and is going to try and go for the Olympic team this weekend).

But he also only weighs like 165 pounds ......

I don't think there really is an "ideal" in triathlon. Look at the various body types of the pro's, from tall and lean like Peter Reid or Farris, to small like Normann, to well built like Macca. In the AG'ers, it's even more pronounced.

You rarely if ever see guys built like linebackers competing at a pro level in endurance sports.  You want as little weight as you can while still maintaining enough power.   A coworker of mine ran cross country in College and "almost" pro at marathon (ran in 2:20 range) for a couple years.   He is about 5'5" and 120 lbs.  Most of the 2 hour marathoners are 120lb kenyan dudes.    Triathletes at least need a little upper body strength for the swim, but not much.

Most make pros seem to be in the 145-160lb range. I think a smaller frame is probably somewhat better than a larger frame, generally speaking (think soccer player, rather than linebacker) but there are all kinds of body types among the pros, and an even wider array among AG's.

Macca is well built?  I saw him at the WC on NBC and he looked like he had no chest muscles.  Granted he would destroy me even if I only had to swim/bike he would still beat me in an IM.

Not having a fat roll on your belly when you go into areo. I really need to get rid of it. It's so annoying!

I would say in general terms that the IM pros are a little bigger while the short course races are smaller, with a few exceptions.

Best story I've heard in regards to physique & elite athletes:

A friend was in Georgia for a race (might have been the Peachtree) and he stayed in the same hotel as the Kenyans that placed very high in the overall standings. They got to chat in the check-out line at the hotel and they admired my friends big arms. They asked him if he worked out.
"oh yeah, I do a lot of push-ups"
"how many"
"About 50"
"AT ONE TIME? WITHOUT STOPPING???"
"uh yeah. how many do you do?"
"If I'm lucky, 3"

Bottom line - most elites have the minimum amount of muscle required for sport, anything else just slows them down

Relative to say a Nromann or a Farris, who are super skinny. Macca's got some big quads, built doesn't just mean upper body.

Yeh, I am glad I don't have that physique.  I woud feel like such a wimp if I could see rips under my chest muscles.  I am not at all saying his a wimp though.

After extensive trial and error, I have determined that 5'10", 185-pounds, with a 46-inch chest and 32-inch waist is not the ideal build for a triathlete. So, you know, you can just check that one off the list.

Hey, I'm not dissing on Macca's physique.  I am just saying that maybe calling him "built" is a bit of an overstatement.    Most dudes have man-boobs and a beer belly, so I'd take his build over that.

At any rate, I think we proved the point that you should be pretty darned skinny to be an elite.

I so know how you feel...I just tried on my first tri top...and feel like someone tried to put spandex on a whale...I am worried about being harpooned while in the water.

Edited because I could.

Aparently it is not 6 ft 190.

I think the perfect physique for male AGers 35-39 is to be really short and heavy. Especially in races I enter

On a serious note, seems to be low body fat, minimal muscle mass.
