Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: Got Dropped, Dusted, and Humiliated So I'm on my Thursday night ride with the group, and it was about 105 degrees at push off. I did my knee rehab the day before which is now basically an expolsive leg workout, so I was a bit tired. I decided to go for it anyway. I traded off riding in front with a very strong rider (a woman) and we were cooking between 28-30 mph for the first 5 miles. I didn't feel great, but I was turning as best I could. When we got to the first climb (a short and easy one) I had been pulling the group for about 3 minutes. As we stated to climb I died...I mean nothing left in my legs. They all passed me like I was standing still, and I was 6 minutes behind on the climb alone. I usually ride in the middle of the pack on climbs, but I was just dusted. Our coach came back for me and rode with me, but it was humiliating. I finished the 35 miles, and a coach-ordered 24oz Dr. Pepper at mile 20 was mandatory and very helpful...who knew? Anyone else get wasted on a ride like this? Please tell me I'm not the only one. |

It rarely works out, that's for sure. I think it's something we all learn the hard way haha. I remember one time I was feeling like crap, and I was wanting to fall off the back. But I didn't want to ride the next 40 miles solo. I knew there was a hill coming up, so I was planning on putting down what little power I had in my legs on the hill to drop a few people so I could hang back with them and be lazy. It actually worked I dropped 5 people by the top of the hill when I peeled off. I remember giggling to my self as I let the group go. |

Been there, done that unfortunately. If you ride long enough with a competive group, I imagine your going to get dropped some time. |

Yeah, knew I had overestimated my legs the second we started climbing...pain and suffering ensued for the next 20 miles. At mile 19 we had 14% grade for 1 mile...I was going to stop (like a few others did -- they had waited at about mile 14 for me), but I knew I would have never got started again. Thank god for my triple-nipple. |

Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: RE: Got Dropped, Dusted, and Humiliated I don't mind getting "girled" at all. Our second best rider is a woman, and she can beat most men any day. We went our way fast, and I tried to stay with our lead group of 3...oops. I don't know if it was heat, nutrition, tired legs, or whatever, but that ride was not fun at all. It was pure torture. I'm scared to even go back to the group next week...maybe a bit embarassed too. Ride and race safe this weekend. I will be an MOP on the rides for a while. |

Master 1728 Pulaski TN | Subject: RE: Got Dropped, Dusted, and Humiliated My first ever group ride took place back in 06 super bowl sunday. It was cold out about 30 with winds about the same and we were going to do a 20 mile ride. So everyone showed up and I am looking around and the youngest by several years and I figured this will be pretty easy ride um no they tookoff like a bullett out of a gun and there was no turning back so I just rode at my pace and never saw them again. Learned my first lesson that age has nothing to do with it! But they usually have no one gets left behind rides this was just not one of them!! |

Lesson Number 1 -- blew that...our group has a few strong riders who usually pull for long sessions (I'm not strong compared to them at all). My mind exceeded my ability. Lesson Number 2 -- I didn't know I was wiped out until I started the climb, but it was freaking instant. My legs went totally dead. I wasn't just spit out the back I was $h!t out the back. Lesson Number 3 -- The last rider went by me so fast I didn't even see him I rode by myself for the last 3 years...riding in a group is a whole new experience that I have only just begun to learn. This lesson was brutal. Thanks for the great advice. |

Regular 154 | Subject: RE: Got Dropped, Dusted, and Humiliated This is a weekly happening for me I ride every Tuesday pm with my husband and a bunch of guys from the local bike shop (I am 40 and in my first year of riding). We stick together for the first 15 minutes - 18-20mph and then off they go. It doesn't even bother me anymore. I look at it like interval training or speed work and then race against myself the rest of the ride. Someone else usually gets dropped along the way and I work really hard to catch them. When they drop me they always say something nice and encouraging about what I'm doing well, it makes up for always coming in last If it wasn't for these rides I would be a whole lot slower. |

Master 1903 Portland, Oregon | Subject: RE: Got Dropped, Dusted, and Humiliated Oh definitely go back - I do the same type of weekly group ride. I spent all last summer and 3 months so far this year DFL up the beginning hill. Fortunately for me it is a regroup ride. They stop at the top, wait a few minutes, and whoever is there rides on. They don't wait forever though. I'm a MUCH better/stronger/faster rider now than before. The Lessons listed above are really good ones. If you aren't feeling strong that day (or yet) then don't pull for very long. I spent a couple of rides blowing up and getting spit out the back after leading out. I got stronger and also quit pulling for so dang long. What was I thinking??? One more lesson: Do not pull up to the point where everyone sprints, if you want to be part of the sprint. |

This lesson was brutal. Thanks for the great advice. Your observation that the strong guys are taking longer pullls is spot on. In a group with varying levels of skill, the stronger riders should maintain the groups pace, but take LONGER pulls. The weakest riders may not be able to pull at all without getting dropped right after, and those guys/gals inbetween should take short pulls and pull off the lead before getting fatigued at the front. THere's no shame in taking a short pull except that you create yourself. If the choice is short pull vs. getting spit out the back...and you want to stay with the group...then there is really only one choice. The more group rides you do the better you ill get at figuring out what you can do when. |

While those are great group riding strategies, they are not "rules of road racing." 1) Never pull the pack to the hill. 2) Don't chase down every break if you are the only person on your team in the race. 3) Unless you are taking a pee break or getting bottles, your azz better be in the top 15 or so of the field at all times (hard to do when 100 others guys are trying to do the same thing). 4) Never break while IN a corner unless you want to play expensive-bike-bowling and see if you can get a strike by taking everyone out. 5) If in a break and working together, do not increase the speed on your pull unless the group has already decided that. There are a billion others, but those come to the forefront right now. |
