Do you race in the same shoes you train in for the running portion of a Triathlon?  So far, I always have, but I've recently seen a great deal of "racing" shoes that are just to light and have very little mid-sole to be able to put high training miles in.  So, what do you do?

I stick with the same shoes because I don't want to risk blisters or other issues by doing something different on race day.

I'm the same way, but I've seen the "NEWTONS" and similar shoes, and I they seem like you'd FLY in them, they are so light, but they don't look heavy duty enough to stand up to months and hundred of miles of mileage.  Maybe I'm wrong.

No, I race in racing flats. These kind of shoes are not made for higher mileage training. They are so light they give a bit of extra speed - maybe a few seconds/mile. There have been times when that few seconds may have been the difference in getting an AG award or not. Getting blisters has never entered into the equation for choosing what shoes to race in for me.

I have one pair of cycling shoes. I can't afford to spend money on race-specific gear aside from my tri top and shorts.

I train in two different shoes. One shoe for endurance runs and slower tmpo work and one shoe for faster tempo and track runs. I race in my tempo/track shoes.

Be careful with shoes like Newtons.  They're designed for a different type of foot strike, and from what I've heard, if you switch over without having trained in them they'll hurt a lot more than help.

I race and train with the same shoes.  My shoes are light enough that I can't justify a different pair.  Also, I'm training for longer events and will want the extra support on long runs.

Depends.  I may use the racing flats now for the shorter distances and use my training shoe for the longer distance races since they accommodate my forefoot strike better.

I cycle two pairs of shoes. One for training and one for racing. Once the training shoe wears out I move the racing shoe to training and get a new pair for racing.

I race and train in different shoes; I will do a few training runs in my flats but for the most part my flats are race day shoes.  They definitely are not designed for high mileage but they feel fast and I'll take that boost on race day.

Currently I'm running two different pairs of flats; a spikeless x-country flat (for non-paved courses) and the adizero racers.

I train in training shoes and race up to half-marathon distance in a pair of Nike Marathoners.  This is not the ultralighweight racing flat as it has a little support, but is still more flexible than my trainers which helps me go a little faster with less fatigue on race day.

I do put a few training miles on them so that my feet are used to them.

You got me looking at the Zoot racing shoes, and now I am a bit interested.  I like the features. Sockless liner, which I have never ran without socks.  Does not retain water, which seems great for those races that take place in the rain or when I dump loads of water over myself to keep cool.  There are ZERO dealers in my area, so I am not able to try them out first.  Not good.  I will call them on Monday to see what they have to say....nice lead!

I train and race both in the same shoes. I couldn't wear lighter shoes even if I wanted to. I need all the support for my super-flat feet I can get!

I am with the majority as I race in my trainers as well......my feet are temperamental to specific shoes and if I were to wear race flats, I would be hurting for weeks, so I wear my trainers.

90% of my training is in normal, full support/cushioning, running shoes. I do a little bit of barefoot running, and a little bit in racing flats.  All races below marathon are in racing flats.  I've done marathons both ways and haven't noticed a big difference (for me).

Yea, I'm not saying "something new" for race day. Rather, specifically buying a RACE shoe, breaking it in a bit, then using it for racing, while leaving the training shoe to "just training".

Right now I race and train in the same shoes.  But, I've tried on the Zoot shoes and thought they were really comfortable, so I'm considering getting a pair to wear for tris.

Hazelmn - 2008-08-24 9:36 PM Nothing new on race day. Nothing new on race day.

When I'm training for a marathon (or half, or 10K), I never run the entire distance as hard as I can for that distance.  In a race, I do.

My point is: This is a nice mantra, and we all like to say it, but there's a difference between being prepared for whatever happens, and doing nothing new -- sometimes being prepared for X entails NOT practicing X.

I wear my racing shoes just for races. I break them and get the feel of them before hand by wearing them to work or school. I train in different shoes.

I race in the same shoes that I train in to avoid blisters etc.  then again I don't have extra lite shoes just plain old running shoes.

I have a pair of shoes that I mostly use for racing and only occasionally train in. (They're the only pair I've set up with Yankz...that's the main reason.)

Just recently, in early August, I went to racing in different shoes than most of my training.  I train in Brooks (primarily)and Sauconys (until I wear out the ones I have) , now I have some lightweight Asics Gel-Banditio for racing.  The Brooks used to be my racing shoes. All are stability shoes and I wear orthotics in them.  I actually have 2 pairs of orthotics, a hard silicon pair and a softer pair.  I train with both orthotics but race with the softer ones.  I did some training in the Asics so they would not be "new" for races.  The 2 races I've used the Asics I set a pr in a triathlon 5 mile run and this last weekend PR'ed a half-marathon.  The Brooks are 11.9 oz, the Asics are 7.9 oz.

It's gotta make a difference.   C'mon, people buy carbon bottle cages to save a few grams, how about something you're picking up 80+ times per minute?

I plan to try the Asics on some long runs during my marathon training this fall and if all goes well, wear them for a full marathon at Las Vegas in December.
