Yesterday, I set out to do a 10 mile run. I somehow messed up my calculations, and when I was done realized I had done 14 miles at a 9 minute mile pace. My longest before this was 10 miles. It was an awesome run(no sharts!!!) and I felt strong throughout, little long in the tooth the last 2 miles, but strong.

So have you ever way overshot your scheduled distance to something alot higher than you have ever done, and for your next run did you back down the milage, or start building from the higher milage?

Aside from my quads being a little sore today, my body feels great, and I am totally jacked by this experience...and to think I was getting anxious about being able to run the 4 miles in a sprint I have coming up in October!!!

i run more than planned when the mood hits.  Sometimes you'll be out there and just feel it.  i've done 15 mile nights when the temp and breeze are right

Not usually.  I'm pretty much a "Do this amount and finish it up" kind of runner.  I have gone out and just went for a ride where I've gone a lot further than intially anticipated, but that was more of a long enjoy-the-ride and nature thing.

Runs no.  Never felt the runners high thing.  I usually count miles very precisely and run more than planned only when I push myself on purpose.  On the bike, however, I when I can ride outside, which is usually only about 1x/week, I often get lost and end up riding further than I plan, does that cournt?  One day I hope to get that feeling you describe it sounds nice.

Never. Sounds like an invitation for injury for me.

Yes, sometimes I'll run longer than planned. I'll add it on toward the end of a run if I'm feeling good. I've run a bunch of marathons so none of these runs are longer than I've ever done - just longer than initially planned. Sometimes I've turned 6 milers into 9-10 miles or 10 milers into 12-14 miles - just depends how I'm feeling. None of the extra distance was ever due to being lost.

Not me.  I love to run, but once I hit the scheduled mileage I'm happy to be done!!

Early in the summer we moved into a new house.  I went for a short run and got lost.  My back hurt for a few days after so now I pay attention so I can do what I can to minimize injuries.  I do get the runners high as well and I love it.

I used to do this pretty often when I would try and guesstimate mileage based on time (e.g., I want to run 15miles with an 8mpm, I should run 120minutes). I would mess up the math all the time. Now I have a GPS watch to protect me from myself.

Congrats on the shart-free run, BTW!!

I once went for a run and extended it to over twice what I had been doing, 9 miles instead of 4.5. There were big hills involved. I was feeling like superman because I had been logging big miles on my bike. I ended up with tendinitis in my hip that bugged me for months. I've learned a lot since then.

Just a few weeks ago, I went for a 60min run in the woods, where I've been running for years.

Oddly enough, part way through the run, nothing looks familiar and I second guess my location (if I'd just kept going straight I'd have been fine). I start running in circles, and got myself all mixed up on the trails. Luckly I was fairly fit, and ended up with a not too stressful 1:45 run. Oops.

Congrats on your run. Even if you felt and do feel great, I'd just add in a bit of extra recovery time to allow your body to adapt to the added training stress you added. Maybe take tomorrow off if you weren't planning, and skip the tempo run later this week or sub a swim for a scheduled short run.

But after that, proceed with your plan.  It would probably be tempting to build from the new long distance if you are in a volume building period.  I'd recommend against that, even though I'd be half-way tempted myself.  Instead, I'd consider taking the 4 or so weeks it was probably going to take you to build from 10 to 14 in your plan... and run 12, 14, 12, 14... and also throw in a weekly lactate threshold session or VO2 max session (depending on your upcoming racing goals) that you couldn't otherwise afford when you were in a volume build.

Just my $0.02.

I'd just graduated from high school that spring, and was spending most of the summer training for a fall marathon. Yup -- not working, just running and odd jobs. I was boosting my long run...

I started out with a small daypack that had spare shoes, socks, and water. I had a vague idea where I wanted to go... Almost 4 hours later I got back home. Tired, but otherwise okay. My parents were curious where I'd gone, so later that day when we had to go somewhere, they clocked it in the car... 22 miles. I had no idea until that moment that I'd run that far...

I have never done it, never tempted to do it. I set a goal, usually a time based goal, get to it and get home.

A few edits and you have my version.

This was way back in 1974 when I first started running (in 9th grade) but I never forgot it.  I had a 3.2 mile loop that I was planning on doing once (which was the most I had done), but after the first loop, I got the purest "runners high" that I've ever had (I've had a few since, but any in a long time and never to the same degree).  After the 3.2 miles my breathing got extremely easy, I had no pain in my legs whatsoever and I ended up running 4 more loops with feelings of euphoria all the way.  It was awesome.  The next day I was VERY sore.

Got way lost on a run in the farm country of eastern PA once. What was supposed to be a 12 miler turned into 21..........in the rain.

Yes... and I usually wish I hadnt! a mile or two from home I am usually wishing I would have went with my original plan when I run out of food or water. I try to stick to the plan nowadays, but sometimes I just go

This has happened to me on rare occasions. I've set out to do a 6-miler (which is long for me), decided to keep going once I reach the halfway point, and turned it into a 9-miler (my longest run to date). Last time this happened, the sun was just setting- the light, temperature, and breeze were perfect.

Yes and I messed up my knee, to far to fast.  Now weeks and weeks later I am slowly back up to 5 miles.  However I am walking every now and again.

I am really curious about your tag line, I could only imagine the bad thing that happened.

Joe
