Comments: My best 5k yet - both by time and overall experience. I really didn't have much left by the end of it - I could barely push anything out at the end, so I knew that I did a good job of leaving it out on the course. Today I made myself hurt :) Thoughts, Mile 1 - Hey there must be something to this warm up thing. I actually feel really good during the first mile for once. Looks like I have something new to work into my prerace routine. After 5 turns (the course has 13 turns), I could still see the back of the "group" at the 1 mile mark. I've never seen that before, I'm usually dropped by the second turn. Sweet! Mile 2 - My left Achiles Tendon is starting to get achy, so I walk about 25 feet to mellow it out a bit. I turn a corner and sneak a peek over my shoulder. HOLY CARP!!! There are 3 people behind me and they don't look like they're about to lap me doing the 10k!! I'm not in last place?!?! Huzzah!! Last 1.1 - Suck... Left AT is starting to complain to the point where I have to stop and stretch it. Wait a minute... I'm at 2.25 miles and I haven't been lapped by a 10k runnner?? Super-Hella-Cool!!! Oh, there they go - never mind. Hey last time I hadn't made 1.8 miles before they lapped me. Super Suck... 3/4 of a mile to go and my AT is REALLY pitching a fit. Stop to stretch it a little bit more, walk a little bit, start running again. Can't... Get... Faster... Than... 14... Minute... Mile... Ankle... Aching... Power, Wanning... :) So I suck it up and just go as hard as I can without breaking anything. Hey, who moved the finish line closer?? Sweet! I'm done? Ewww, manuver around the barf in the finish chute... Blech. Man, that was a good race! Ohhh, I better sit for a second before getting anything to eat or drink. What would you do differently?: Probably not wear as heavy of an outer layer next time. Just on the verge of being too warm by the end, but I certainly wasn't suffering. Glad I had water ![]() Post race
Warm down: Instead of heading to the chow line, I waited to watch one of the ladies that I chatted with at the starting line finish her 10k. She missed a 60 minute 10k by a few seconds... That was close. She was spent, so we went over to the grub line and I got her a gatorade so that she could sit to collect herself. We had a great chat about realising one day that you are totally fat and out of shape and starting to run to get into better shape. She's been running for 3 years and has lost a bunch of weight. It really gave me hope that I was doing the right thing. I ate half a bagel with Peanut Butter and a couple of Oreo cookies. Drank a pint of Frankendrink. On my way to my car, I got to meet the president of the running club and I found out that he had written an article about me in the last club newsletter... WTF? He said it was cool that I just run, always have a big smile and that I'm just there to have fun. Sweet. He said that he'd bring me a copy next month. I'm excited to read it - I'm famous! :) What limited your ability to perform faster: I thought about this question quite a bit on the way home. Normally I would put in here that I'm still a fat badger or that my ankle still hasn't gotten back to 100% since I wrecked in December, etc. But you know what? After my push hands seminar with Sifu Gracenin yesterday I realised that nothing limited me from being faster today. Nothing at all. I ran as fast as I possibly could have without hurting myself. Today I could not have run any faster. Next month may be a different story, but as far as today goes, I have no limits. Event comments: Very excellent race. I couldn't believe how beautiful the weather was today. It's February and it feels like spring. According to the rumors, they have beer at the end of the 4th and final race of the series... Even though I don't live close enough to really show up to a lot of the club functions, for $12 a year I think that I'll have to join. Lots of great, really fun people. Thanks everyone who sent me happy thoughts for this race, I got them, every last one :) Last updated: 2004-12-15 12:00 AM

Slept in a little bit. Had a Myoplex shake, a banana and a handful of honey roasted sesame sticks for breakfast about 3 hours before the race. Listened to Mr. Mister (Go On...) and Radiohead (The Bends) on the way to the race. Took a gel packet when I got to the race (about 25 - 30 minutes before start).
Since the first mile is always the hardest for me, I decided to try a warm-up jog today. I've always been wary of doing one because 5k is still a big distance for me and I'm afraid to wear myself out too much before the start. I went up and down a couple of hills at the park, did some taijiquan to mellow out the jitters, played with some dogs and walked over the starting line.
