Subject: People Who Don't Train. Why Are They So Fast?
I did a triathlon race at my university yesterday and I came 2nd. The guy who came 1st doesn't train for triathlons and I have been training for nearly a year.

Iv'e found out I'm more and endurance athlete and not really big on speed at all.

The distance was 250m swim, 5k bike, 2k run (basically a sprint I think?)

Yea so just a question, how does this guy who maybe runs 2-3 times a week (I know this for a fact as he is one of my good friends) beat someone like me who trains specifically for triathlon races?

I'm not throwing a tantrum, just woundering how this all sorta worked out?

Thanks

Some people are just born with it. Blame your parents.

Not even close to Sprint distance. Way to short a race to conclude anything.

No doubt.  Someone who has crappy form, but really good explosive power could do that without a lot of endurance.

A "normal" sprint would be in the 400 - 800 yard range for the swim, 12 - 15 miles for the bike and a 5k.  Even the fastest people barely break an hour in most sprints making it an endurance event.

No worries.  If you guys went longer right now you'd probably fare much better!

Yeah, that can hardly even be called a triathlon.  You'd probably smoke him at a longer distance.

That's like being a cross-country runner and getting mad because someone beat you in the 100 meters.   :P

It's much easier to go completely all out on a mini-sprint - pacing isn't a big an issue.

And yep, genetics do factor into it.

But, hey, you came in 2nd and that's awesome!

If it's any consolation, I'm someone who looks like they should be quite fast, except I'm not.

i HATE genetics...

I'm predisposed to be heavy, so it's a HUGE effort to stay fit. I'm the only "grandson" that is fit (out of 8). One cousin of mine is young, and his metabolism has not caught up with him...YET.

It's just not FAIR! WAAAAHHHHHHH

(SLAP)

Ok, just slapped the F out of myself and said HTFU...

DerekL - 2008-10-04 10:30 PM 5K bike?  What's the point?

Cause for us exceptionally slow bikers, it makes us feel fast because we're done under an hour.

Oh cool thank you everyone,

I put in all that training and was feeling a bit down, but after I realise what that guy said about being a cross country runner and losing in a 100m makes heaps of sense!

Thanks everyone.

Oh btw there were only 2 people in the race lol

Top 3 finish!! yipee!

Why don't you try a longer race with him and see how he does?

How long did it last 20minutes? Seriously did the two of you do real transitions? Seems like more of a WU between friends.

2 people? Now, that's a race I have to enter. I would actually have a chance of placing, as long as they don't close down the finish line before I get there.

What kind of athletic background does dude have previous to this?  I think folks just pencil in 'genetics' all the time vs looking at past athletic aptitude which has a lot to do with things IMO.
