I saw a picture a while back of the start of a race. It must have been a marathon or something. Anyways, a few of the people in front were wearing arm warmers. At first I thought it was kind of silly, then I thought it over, and it seemed like a pretty good idea for a long run or race. As soon as you get too warm, peel off the warmers, tuck them in somewhere and keep running (just like on the bike). Since it is that time of year, does anyone do this? I'm going to try it on a longer run this week. What do you all think?

Standard practice for our early season duathlons in this neck of the woods.

One of the tris I did in Sept. was cold and windy and was turned into a du because of the ocean waves and current, so I wore arm warmers for the whole race.  Worked great for me.

For cold weather, I always wear them for the start of my run, then usually about 1-2 miles in I strip them off and tuck them into my jersey's pockets.

It also seems like a good way to re-use gear and save a little money.

I like arm warmers when I'm starting early and it might warm up by the end.  They are a lot lighter to carry in your pocket than a long sleeved shirt.

I have been thinking about getting some simply since the temp these days can be somewhere in the middle of a short-sleeve or long-sleeve.

I wore them during my half mary at the end of Sept. The morning was freezing and I wore them for the first 45 min then peeled them off and stuffed them in my fuel belt. Easy and much better than running with a jacket tied round your waist.

Silly question: I've only seen ones marketed as cycling arm warmers. Do you just use those, or are there run-specific arm warmers that exist? Does it matter?

Mine are cycling ones (Giant's generic model).  They typically run about $40 or so for a pair.

Doesn't matter. All will work. And kind of stylish.....kinda.

I do know that some actually give your muscles support though. The ZENSAH line is awesome. http://www.zensah.com/6020w.html

Oh, and there are also cool wings, that cool your arms off. You'll see people wear them in warm races.

I just wear a long-sleeve shirt.  I've never had a point where I was worried about my arms being cold while running.  Hands yes, arms no.

yes I think most people use cycling brand ones. In fact some people just use long socks and cut out the bottom

Not everyone cuts out the bottoms.. We got a guy on our team(he is good too) he just uses normal socks for gloves/arm warmers.

I use them when it starts getting chilly until it's absolutely too cold for it. I prefer to run in sleeveless for as long as possible. I wear a pair made by Sugoi for cycling for colder weather (below 40) and a lighter pair from Moeben for slightly cool (below 50). The Moebens are actually similar to the cool wings Trixie mentioned. They are made to wear year-round and offer protection from the sun. If I get hot, I just pull them down or take them off. Works great.

I use arm warmers alot. Sometimes just little black gloves can help too. I buy knit stretchy gloves at Target, they cost $1.49 for 2 pairs. I keep a pair tucked in my fuel belt in the fall and winter, or running on the coast when fog can come in fast and drop the temps.

Old soccer socks or tube socks work great...cut off foot or not and then they are cheap and disposable.

There are some cool colored ones for women. I've only seen them sold as cycling gear.

A friend has PI ones that have skull/crossbones on em. So badass!

Mine are plain black spandex. They work nice, for both cycling and running. Check bargain sales, you can get em now much cheaper than $40/pair!!

O.k. used mine on a couple runs this week. I got some Nike Livestrong ones the birthday. They rock. Started out cold and had them on. Got warm, took them off and tucked them in the shorts. Was headed into the wind at the turn around and put them back on. I would recommend this, especially to us folks down here where it doesn't get too cold in the winter.
