Subject: Morning run - did you eat before run?

I am planning to move my running to 5:30am in the morning.

However, I run into a small problem...

I tried to run before breakfast.  But I don't have enough energy to run.

I tried to run after breakfast. I end up with bad stomachache after the first mile.

The only way is to have breakfast 1.5-2 hrs before my run, which means I have to wake up 3:30am to have breakfast, wait for 1.5-2 hrs to disgust, then run.  I doubt its going to work in a long term due to lack of sleep

What do you guys do?

How far are you running?

If I'm running first thing, I never eat beforehand.  Except for a race.

My long runs are usually 1:30-2:00hr at 6 AM.  No breakfast, small glass of water.  GU 45 minutes in every 30-45 minutes thereafter.  Never had energy or GI issues.  After, I usually have a glass of chocolate milk, shower and then PBJ and egg beaters with some kind of veg.

Your body will adjust. I don't eat until after my run in the morning. It may take a little while but your body will get used to it.

I have coffee and gel only. Works for me. Plus more gel on the run depending on how long it is.

Nope, didn't eat anything before my 10k run this morning.  Did, however, swim for an hour beforehand.

Chances are pretty good that your body has plenty of glycogen to get you through the morning run just fine.  (Even considering the overnight 'fast'.)  If you're going out for 2 hours or more, I might suggest taking a gel along, just in case.  Otherwise, just refuel wisely when you're done.

I usually wake up hungry so I'll grab a handful of cereal and drink some water before heading out.  If it's a longer run (2+ hours) I'll eat a real breakfast about an hour before  and take a gel every 60 minutes.

I always drink first a glass of orange juice and then my Super-Soy Protein Shake (chocolate)...My tummy needs something inside before a run...if not...I won't have energy and will be dead....LOL...

simple,

eat something before you go to bed.

If you eat within 3 hours, it's not really going to help you (and will more likely hurt you) and if you eat during and are running under 90 mins, it's probably not going to do much for you either.  You need to keep your glycogen stores up overnight.  Easiest way to do it is a quick snack of some complex carbs before you turn in.   If you still have the munchies, just ignore them and they will go away once you warm up and your core temp rises a little.

usually before my morning workouts...that are about 60 min long<cough cough when I do them>  I'll attempt to get 150 -200 calories in before hand, apx 30-45 min before.  It could be anything from a glass of OJ, half a bagel, couple of GU's. I notice that especially for swimming I do better when I have something vs when I don't.. Just my experience though

If I'm doing something longer  2-3 hr bike, I'll definitely eat more

I run at 5:30 or 6:00a.m. for an hour to hour and a half. No food or drink since the night before. I do try to force a BM, otherwise I have GI problems. I would drink water first, but I am too foggy and grumpy to get some.

You will adjust, just hang in there... I was in the same boat went from evening to morning runs.  Felt dead in the mornings but now its reversed and morning runs are better than evening. I only drink a little coffee and maybe a just piece of fruit at the most before running.

I run/bike before 5 AM and have only a glass of water first. When I first switched to the AM schedule, I experimented with an apple, a slice of bread, or a glass of juice, first. Eventually, water seemed preferable to any of those choices. I agree with the others who say you will get used to it. It took a good couple of months before the early AM workout schedule started to feel natural to my body. A 'lack of energy' when first starting early workouts is entirely understandable. Stick with it.

I was just having the conversation with someone earlier!

I need at eat at least a little something before I run in the morning.  Generally I'll have a small glass of juice and either a half piece of toast with pb, a handful of cereal or a couple bites of a powerbar.  I find that I usually have a better workout when I eat something versus when I don't.  When I don't eat anything before a morning run I feel very lethargic and tend get lightheaded and nauseous.

I don't eat before my morning run.  I don't like too much in my stomach.

I'm an early morning runner and have no more than a cup of coffee and a banana before the run.  Anything more and I have problems.  Sometimes if it's a longer run I might have a soy shake with a banana but usually I regret doing that.  You might try a gel with a glass of water right before your run.  I do think after some time your body get adjusted to running on the empty stomach...especially if you had a good meal the night before.

For anything less than a 1.5 hour run, I don't eat beforehand. I do try to stay hydrated during the night though (every time I wake up, I drink a little water) and have some water after I get up.

When you say you "don't have enough energy to run", what sort of a feeling is that exactly? If you're feeling at all dizzy, lightheaded, nauseated (symptoms of low blood sugar), that's certainly a problem. If you're just feeling generally tired, maybe you're not allowing enough time between waking and running. I don't do very well getting out of bed and immediately going for a run, so instead I try to take care of all my pre-work stuff (breakfast prep, making snacks for the day, laying out work clothes, feeding dogs, etc.) before I run. Even though it's only a 15-20 minute difference in time, it's a big change in my energy level when I get out there to run.

For runs of more than 1.5 hours, I eat a couple of pieces of fruit immediately after I wake up. This doesn't cause me any kind of GI issues. If it did, I'd probably use a sports drink instead, and take more sports drink with me in my Fuel Belt for the run.

I am all about the coffee...  drink it and go out the door...  If I think too much or eat I would end up realizing how insane I am for running at 5:30 am!

When I do workout in the morning, for runs I usually don't eat before hand. Might have a gel if I am hungry before I head out. For swimming I eat something or end up starving half way through rather then right after. Today it was a piece of wheat bread with some PB on it, a swig from the OJ carton and a glass of water.

I have to eat for my own sanity before any morning workout.  Usually just a piece of toast with jam or PB and a cup of coffee.  Depending on how far I'm going I'll take in some gels during the workout if long enough (any run over 45 min or so) along with my camelbak of water.  I go empty handed if it's a quick run under 45 mins and heat's not an issue.

Then I scarf down some ceral or oatmeal afterwards before heading to work and at work eat another breakfast of a veggie omelet around 9:30.

If you couldn't tell I like to eat

For my 5am runs, I have a glass of water and sometimes a banana beforehand. That's about all my stomach can handle. For an afternoon or evening run, I have to wait at least 2 hours after eating to be able to run.

Strong coffee and I wait until that's through me so I don't have to use the bathroom during the run

If I'm running an hour or more, it's a 10 Oz glass with two scoops of HEED before the run and that's it until breakfast.

get up at 0345 out the door at 0355 back inside at 0445-0500 no food during the week. On the weekend for the long run get up at 0400 because i can sleep in then have 2 pieces of toast and a banana then go back to sleep til 0600 then go on the long run. On the weekends i treat it like i would on a race day just so my body is used to it.

I think the general rule of thumb is that if you're going to be working out longer than an hour then it is wise to eat something.

You can try just eating something very small, like a couple of bites of a clif bar, before you go, or you could try waking up at 3am eating something quick then going back to sleep for 2 more hours before your workout.
