Master 1472 | Subject: RE: How long will CdA stay open? $550 is a lot, however those of us that have this silly sport in our blood seem to find a way. It is much easier for me as a local, obviously but I think it will fill up relatively fast. I was registered by 9:30 this morning and I am an unemployed full time single Dad, suffering in this economy. Been scraping and saving to make it happen. |

Pro 3705 Vestavia Hills | Subject: RE: How long will CdA stay open? I registered the moment the clock clicked 12:00 pm pst ... and did not have a problem getting in. Last year it stayed open for at least a week, so I guessed a week. The reason why St. Georges might still be open is that it is on May 1st. This means that you have to train through the cold winter. Same thing for CdA. I remember training for CdA in 2007 and riding in weather so cold that my aerobottle froze and I actually had to chew my Gu ... and I live in Georgia. I can only imagine those living in states where they have real winters. CdA might be the gineau pig but Lake Placid will be the acid test. If Lake Placid does not sell out the day registration opens then we know that the sport might need some stimulus dollars. |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: How long will CdA stay open? ChrisM - 2009-06-22 5:09 PM Community Fund slots are languishing. It's been a couple months for IMSG. Not sure there are any conclusions to draw from that one, though, because there are too many possible reasons. Not the least of which is that no one seems to have known it was in the works...with the general need to register for an M-Dot IM a year ahead of time and to make plans for registering well before that, I suspect part of the problem is that it just came up on people too suddenly for them to make the decision and the commitment on short notice. Between that, the early season date, and the hills (esp. on the run), I think it was a tough sell this time. But there's obviously going to be an impact from the economy on all big ticket discretionary items. If people are deferring health care (and they are), there's certainly going to be more people than usual deciding against pulling the trigger on an IM. It isn't just the $550...it's the need to be on site for multiple days, more than your average tri (including your average independent IM)...even if you can drive to the race, if you aren't local, lodging is a big bite to take if you are concerned about the stability of your income a year out. |

Oh Chris, you are just blessed to live in your bubble that is LA I would've agreed with that sentiment while living in San Diego, but now after moving to Michigan, I think LP is almost too early!! Winter stays until MAY. No joke, man, 6mos of snow and sub freezing temps, totally saps enthusiasm for 3-6 hour rides- either outdoors OR on the trainer. Early AM workouts? Sun doesn't come up till 8, temps only jump past 40 after noon- but not until May. Heck, mid-June and we still had early morning temps hovering around 40. I'm not a wuss, either- I marathon train all winter, outdoors, but those long bike rides would ALL have to be done on a trainer, and most people just can't stomach that- not when there are plenty of other IM options. So, CDA has to mainly draw from Cali, AZ, NM, etc, and I guess that's why it takes a while. |

Master 1376 Chicago | Subject: RE: How long will CdA stay open? I was talking to some of the Ironman folks (people who work for Ironman). They said that there were almost 500 no shows for this years IMCDA race. A lot of people backed out when they lost jobs and couldn't afford to travel to the site. They paid the race fee a year ago, but when it came time to buy plane tickets and put the final deposit in on hotel, they couldn't afford it. They are expecting all the Ironman events to be down this year due to people not being able to afford to travel. The cost of the race is one thing, but to bring your family to an event can be very expenisve. I would bet that most of the races will take a little longer to sell out then in the past. I can't say enough good things about CDA. The race was awesome, the people and support was unbeliveable. If you are looking to do an early Ironman, I would highly recommend CDA.

Matt Yeah, IM is not just the $550. Much as I thought IMAZ was a "meh" course, the fact that I can drive to it, spend just 2 or 3 nights and spend as little or as much as I wanted on a hotel makes it that much more appealing....... |

And that really wasn't possible this winter here in MI- our roads were covered in ice most of the winter. I am not a wuss, but I also don't have a beater bike that I can ride on snow/ice covered roads. So does this mean that IMLP might not sell out on site? I would love to NOT have to drive the 12 hours to sign up.... |

The race fee is the cheapest part of the IM experience. Hence why despite saying I never wanted to do IMFL I am probably signing up for next year's event...all because I now live an hour away. How can I pass that up? The night before IM I will probably sleep in my own bed! |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: How long will CdA stay open? I'm guessing 2-3 weeks considering there are still community fund spots open for IMWI and IMLP this year, and I think pretty much every other NA IM. That is pretty unusual. But on the flip side I'm signing up for LP next year and even with the economy can't get a hotel up there without a 5 night minimum - even though hotels have vacancy! It's ridiculous. You'd think with the current economic situation they might be a little more flexible. |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: How long will CdA stay open? My guess is 3-4 weeks. I was floored at how much IM races cost now- $580ish with the lovely active.com fee. When I registered for IM FL back in 2005, I remeber it being only $450. I can't believe how much it has gone up in price! I think the economy is holding some people back from registering this year. |

Champion 7553 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: How long will CdA stay open? Still regular slots a week after on-line registration started, but I'd guess it'll fill sometime this week. 1) It's early (but not too early to get decent outdoor rides in April/May here in the midwest) For me, the advantages were: 1) It didn't sell out immediately. CF =/= "Normal" entry. I think WTC uses the CF slots to gauge demand. Part of the reason CF slots have "languished" in the last year is they've increased the number of CF slots available. For WTC, their optimum CF/normal allocation would have them selling every CF slot, but not until the last minute (so to speak). Unsold CF slots represent lost revenue as they could have been sold at the "normal" rate. An early sellout of CF slots says there is still significant demand, even at $1000, so they should raise prices. CF slots allow them to claim "sold out" status and the artifical scarcity associated with that demand without actually "selling out" the race. As other's have said, the $550 race fee is just the start. For those considering a relatively long drive to register on-site, you'll probably be close to $500 for gas, meals, and a hotel, so the extra $500 (charitable contribution) may be a good deal. |
