Subject: Anyone worried about their job?

My company is still doing pretty well, but there's been some office gossip going around that there may be some layoffs.  I'm sure there's a lot of people that are in the same boat.  Anyone want to share?  How do they decide who goes/who stays?  (I sure hope it's not by who plays on the internet the most).  I've never worked for a company that had layoffs before.   Normally, I wouldn't be overly concerned, but I just bought a house this year.  I don't know what I would do.

What job?

Last year, my company couldn't hire people fast enough to fill the demand. This year, almost all of them were let go. I was laid off the day before I bought a house... I consider myself very lucky.

Very worried - although I own and operate my own small business - I had to lay off my part-timer a few months ago, and there's not enough work to sustain me for much longer. I'm hoping the fall and a few new programs I'm launching will pull me out of the death spiral.

In my neck of the woods - things are bad. 99% of my friends are also business owners and are really struggling, large corporations are really scaling back, lots of places have shut down completely - just yesterday it was announced that one of our 2 local tv stations is shutting it's doors in August.

I'm frightened. Not just worried. Scared.

2x on the What job? Front.

Been applying for every thing and any thing that I'm remotely qualified (and lots of stuff that I'm OVER qualified) for...with absolutely nae luck.

Things have to get better soon, or Life will get really bad really fast.

First to go tends to be middle management.  Then the little people who's job can be dumped on to someone else.  Then all the fluffy stuff like projects, development and "wish list" projects are cut right after the budget.   Maybe nows the time to start doing extra stuff - depending on the nature of your job.  Design a procedure manual to show you a) have a lot of knowledge and b) aren't afraid to share it.  Being proactive in a time like this can only benefit you in the long run.

Lost my job in May 08, went the summer found a better job. More money, better people, and honestly cutting edge stuff that has a chance to really make a difference in the world. I LOVE MY NEW JOB. It is so much better than any I have had before. I got in on the ground floor but so far its amazing.

Hang in there folks things will get better.

I would say that having someone else write your resume is worth the money.

I lost my job December 29th and my benefits December 31st (Cobra is very expensive). I moved to Houston for the job about a 1.5 years ago, bought a house and at the time my wife and I were expecting our fourth child in February. By the way, did I mention were were told our son (due in February) would have to have part of his lung removed when he was born?

Talk about stress...... we did what we needed to get by. In today's economy every one should be concerned about their job. Best advice plan for the worse, and hope for the best. It took me four months to find a new job and now I work for an international company and telecommute to work.

Things worked out in the end, but do I still worry? Of course I do.

At this point they're letting none of us go or all of us(i.e. killing off the whole division), so I'm about as secure as I can be.

There won't be a bonus or retirement contributions, but when things get bad, my job security actually goes up.  I'll gladly sacrifice some of the perks for the paycheck.

Just curious, I live and work inthe greater Raleigh area. Would you PM me the name of the company you work for? You sound like the happiest person in the Triangle job-wise.

I am somewhat worried.  I'm the HR manager and we've had 2 rounds of layoffs so far this year.  It's possible that my work schedule will be reduced by 20%, which is definitely better than not having a job at all!  More time to train too,  I guess...but less money for entry fees!

I dont think amny people are over-confident even if things are going well. The only good thing to come from higher unemployement #'s is that this Country's savings rates are 5x higher than where they were 2 years ago and the revolving debt is decreasing. Some of that forced by creditors etc, but still healthy practice to stay with us even in good times.

Best of luck to those looking, I count my blessings every day, but am prepared for the worst.

I am worried about my job and it is a fairly secure job (to big to dump on anyone else, to important to get rid of at this point, and since I work with Oncology patients well...if I lost a job due to cancer getting cured I would be very happy to clear out my desk! but until then people will still get cancer and need treatment.) even with all of that I am worried about it. My work itself has not had to let anyone go (though one of our affiliates has) but we have had a hiring freeze for all non essential positions.

My wife on the other hand...has not had any luck getting another job as a teacher and she is a K-8 teacher with a special education certification and several years experience as a special ed teacher. Needless to say, the substitute market will be FIERCE this fall.

Not at this point (fortunately I guess). The IT industry in Vancouver seems to be okay. I've been interviewing people to get at least one other person to perform the same job as me on different projects. Most of the people that I know that have been laid off in the last year have found another job within 6 weeks.

Ditto - twice in 15 months, though. One downsizing, the next company just came in and shut their doors (oil and gas biz) unnanounced.

I'm pretty worried too. Last year, our company got bought out and now, the parent company is in support of moving 'our' (bought out company) positions overseas to China and other cheaper countries. Our team is down to about 50% China and 50% original team. There goal is to move everyone from our team to China.

I was laid off in May and was fortunate enough to find a new one a month later.  The new company is having furloughs to deal with things (after having done some layoffs) but we haven't heard what is going to happen for next year.  I am certainly not secure in knowing things are okay but I feel like I have as good a chance as anyone since they decided after being without a person in this position for a few months that it just wasn't working.  Additionally I've already been told flat out that I've added value so that's encouraging.  I've been very clear about my goals of increasing revenue in the stream that I'm involved with and my methods to do it.  They seem ready to support that and eager to have it happen.

Nope...work in prison - business is booming. People are fighting just to get in. Literally.

However state budget is tight. I didnt get my raise and have to take 8 furlough days. No big deal, I need more time away from the place anyways.
