Subject: Am I a jerk for swimming Fly?
I have often wondered this while at the local pool.  I normally just swim front crawl like the rest of them, but sometimes I remember the good old times from my swim team days and like to rip off a 50 of fly.  Is this bad?  It was one of my strokes at the time and I can actually still do it and I do enjoy it, but I worry it will upset others.  I won't do it if I'm sharing a lane.

To each their own when it comes to your own lane. Why not? Great for working different muscle groups. I see it alot at my pool mixed in with backstroke, breast, etc. My wife swam fly in highschool and afterwards and she let's me know it when we are at pool together. I am envious.

OK, so I won't say jerk, and you don't do it while sharing but I just have to share a funny observation.

I almost never see anyone doing fly at the pool.  now.

But man, after the Olympics, it was epidemic.  And all I kept thinking is holy haysoos, now everyone thinks they're freaking Michael Phelps:->  I mean it was comical how often I saw it......and it was not pretty in many instances.  All I thought is well, that'll get me used to swimming in strong current, heh heh.

I don't see any problem with it unless you're sharing a lane with others.

I frequently swim with masters swimmers who are working on all four strokes.  I always do some breaststroke during my workouts and some backstroke.  I raced fly when I was a kid, but can only manage about 25 yds these days.

I fly (Mainly inside of IM sets) even when I share a lane. Just switch to one arm fly when you're crossing paths.

I think if you have your own lane, knock yourself out!

I was in a lane the other day with a little girl doing fly, and even though she was tiny, it was pretty disturbing. I also try to be mindful of breaststroke kicks when sharing a lane, and drifting when I do backstroke.

If you are in your own lane... who cares what you do? You aren't hurting anyone by doing it.

Why would it upset others? *Confused look*

I think it's pretty common for some fly swimmers to yell loudly when their head is out of the water.  It can be be intimidating to an 80 yr old noodler to see and hear that coming at you at 6am.

Never an issue. Just don't gun for others with your arm swing.

In a tri, never.  For practice to learn other strokes and keep the arms working different ways, yes I do fly.  I learned how to swim (properly) for triathlon.  It's my goal to learn all the strokes passably just to have more variety in my swim sets and maybe swim masters events when I improve a bit.  Did an IM type workout this morning as a matter of fact....

I think you should go ahead and swim fly in the next tri! I double dog dare you!

I have no problem with anyone swimming fly. Even sharing a lane as long as you break into a 1 arm fly when passing someone.

Now I'm confused.  Did you actually mean:

I know a guy who magically if the lanes are full and someone shows up and needs to share a lane; he magically starts doing the fly.

LOL  I thought red was just for sarcasm.  I was just being a smartazz.  ;-)  I got that vision in my head and went with it.  I'm actually thinking of trying it out.  If I do, I'll video tape it but I have to be sure there is an 80yr old noodler in my lane so I can get their reaction.

Nope.  If it's part of your workout it's part of your workout.  Just try not to whack anyone in the head.

Mmmm-hmmm, x2. But only when done correctly.

I like to bust out fly every once in awhile if I'm feeling too good about my swimming. Humbles me right up!

Its a pool and its your workout - I have had to endure alot more annoying things that someone swimming fly - like the beginner swimmer that can not stay straight and bumps into you with EACH passing. At which if I am that annoyed, *I* will get up and go to another lane - I do not think I would ever not do fly worrying about what others thought of me. Its a "swimming" pool - not a "freestyle only pool".

Just my two cents anyways.

You won't be any more annoying than the girl who swims breaststroke faster than  I crawlstroke.

Not a jerk at all, and it sounds like you're pretty careful re: other swimmers.  I don't do tons of fly, but do have some IM sets every so often.  I find that when I switch to free right after fly I'm actually very dialed in to how I move through the water and my stroke is really good.
