It depends on the course.

It depends on the course.

x2

One race I normally do has a long run from the beach to transition and then a long run to the mount line (and return at the exit); for that race I am happy if my total T times were under 3:00.

Another race I do has a very short run to transition from the swim and the mount line is right at the end of transition.  For that event, if I am not under 1:30 total I know I gave away time in transition.

Ultimately, it is always my goal to have one of the fastest transitions at the race and I often pass athletes in transition (and like bear, have beaten athletes who have swam, biked and ran faster than I did).

X2. Big variable is the run distances, like from the swim exit to the rack, rack to mount line, yada yada. Wetsuit will also add time.

I just did one where the timing mats were at the entrance and exit to the transition area, minimized the running as much as possible. I had the fastest T1 in the race (<25 seconds) and the fourth fastest T1+T2 (1:04). Fellow BTer Cajuntriguy had the fastset combined time, like 58 seconds.

Last race I did lumped together T1+Bike+T2, and I had the second fastest time in the race.

If it's taking you 3:15 and there's no significant running or a wetsuit involved, you have a lot of work to do.

I've had transitions that took seconds...and others that took minutes. All course dependent.

When I started I was lost and didn't plan ahead. I learned what to do and practiced. Now If it takes me more than 2:00 in a sprint tri I'm pretty disappointed. I am doing a HIM in sept - I plan to be through t1+t2 in less than 2 minsOh btw I don't use a wetsuit but i do wear separate biking and running shoes. As stated though each race has very different transition scenarios. BUT the run from teh water to the trans are is almost always included in the swim time not T1 so that is not a factor.

From what I've read on here (race reports, etc.), that isn't necessarily true.

I clocked myself at around 25 sec for T1 and 30ish for T2 at my first tri. No yanx, with socks on bike and run, lace-up bike shoes, and a bucket. Unfortunately, that particular race didn't separate transition times, so I have no idea how I stacked up.

I've read of races with over a quarter mile of running included in T1, and that's just to GET to the transition area. Obviously, that's gonna take a lot longer than something with 50 feet of running total.

Maybe in your limited experience, but I've seen plenty that do it either way, The sprint I did last week clocked you coming out of the pool, >200 yards from transition, and the one I do next month has timing mats at the swim exit, ~800 yards from transition.

Also wear seperate shoes for bike and run. Last race I came into T2 right behind a friend you rides sprints in his running shoes on a modified toe clip platform that clips into his pedals. Came out of T2 right behind him, too, even though I had to put on my running shoes.

X whatever.

You can easily have a long run up from the water to the transition zone.

If things are pretty concise, then if I'm not under 2:00 combined I am pretty pizzed.

With so many variables from where the timing mats are to how big the transition area is, I've had them anywhere from under a minute to four minutes.  I just try and spend as little time as possible at the rack, and that's usually only a few seconds.

depends on the gate from swim to t1.  is it at swim exit or t1.

usually 40sec.  for each.  need to get them down to a solid 30 sec.

it depends on the how long the finish line is open for .. I often like to take a quick power nap after the swim,, and relax on my bucket while having a beer in T2.

300 meter run in T1 at my last race.  250 meter run in T2.  Everyone was required to run to the BACK of the transition area, to make it more equitable.  In T2, I said to myself, "I had to run to run to get to the run.  I figure that the runs added well over a minute to my total transition.

He's drinking beer in T2, which is after the bike. Most likely, though, he's hyped on on blue Monster while he's on the bike.

Shane

Your "long" run to transition must not be the same as my "long" run to transition.  I have a good 1/3-1/2 mile to my transition so i'm good if T1 is less than 4-5 min
