So I'm riding home from work, about 2 miles into my 14 mile ride.  Cruising around 25mph in a 35mph zone.  I'm on the far right of a 4 lane divided road, so two lanes each way.  I notice the big red F-150 up ahead stopped waiting to turn left across the two lanes.  So when does she turn? yup, just in time to cut me off.  It's been drizzling out, so the roads are a little wet, I've been on my hoods (too many obstacles in the road for me to be on the aerobars thankfully).  I see her turn and immediately try to slow down, wet roads don't help this situation though.

So I have 3 options... 1) try to make a sharp 90 degree turn on wet roads at ~15+mph and hope I don't lay the bike down and slide under the truck.  2) swerve left to try to go around the back end of the truck, possibly cutting off a car that might be in the far left lane, and still hope I don't slide out.  3) Keep the bike upright and try to minimize my impact speed with the side of the truck.

I chose option 3 somewhere in those fractions of a second you have to react.  I guestimate that I probably got down to like 14-15mph.  Front wheel makes contact with the truck first, snapping the carbon fork, aerobars make contact next into the side of the car (putting a good dent there),  then I think my head/helmet makes contact with the door frame near the bottom left of the window, my shoulder/side of my arm then slams into the side of the truck.  I leave scrape marks all down the side of the truck as the truck continues to move forwards onto the side street.  Somehow during all that I managed to get unclipped from the pedals and I'm now standing in the road, hands still on the brakes, and I look down and no longer have a front tire there.

I'm lucky, no major injuries, just some cuts, scrapes, and what I hope is just some sore muscles in my hand and upper arm.  The bike wasn't as lucky.  Snapped cables, snapped fork, slightly bent front wheel, and hopefully no frame damage (I'll be letting the LBS inspect everything though).  My helmet probably saved me from some major injuries though, it's cracked and my head is not... so score one for Trek Helmets.  I lost a lense  to my smith glasses though... turns out it's actually in the back of the truck and she's going to be nice enough to give it back.

But even with all that, I have two weeks until my A race that I've been training for for 9 months.  My first HIM!  and now I'm bikeless!  Talk having a story about my first HIM before I even get to do it yet.

Be careful out there everyone, wear your helmet, and check the back of the truck if you're missing gear after an accident. Oh, and she got a failure to yield ticket and a court date she has to show up at, I got to call a friend to come pick me up.  Luckily two doors down was a bar, so I stopped and treated myself to a Guinness after dealing with the Police and waiting for my friend.

Here's some pictures:

Sounds like you took this better than I would have. I would have been furious. I hate to read things like this and this type of thing seems to happen to often. Hope there is no frame damage and you get your bike together in time to race!

I assume her insurance will be buying you a new bike?  I know I went through this recently and at the time it was terrible but once I was reimbursed for the cost of 4 bikes that were smashed on the back of my car as a result of rear-end collision it turned out to be a blessing.  Everyone in the family was able to get a new bike and their insurance company was suprisingly easy to deal with regarding replacement cost for expensive bikes.

Any chance the driver was heading towards the bar?

Glad to hear you weren't hurt more, but you might want to get checked out anyway.  Some injuries won't show up right away.  And her insurance should be paying for a new bike and any medical problems.

Or even worse, leaving the bar! I love when I'm riding and I see a car that is texting and looking down when they go past me. It's even better if the other hand has make up or a sandwich in it (please note the sarcasm). Please be careful everyone. I'm glad you're OK.

WOW! Glad you are OK! You were lucky!

Too bad about your bike. That is upsetting. I can't see the pictures (red x's?) but I'm sure it was bad.

Be thankful you are not snapped in two though!

I also would like to know what she says. Was she remorseful and apologetic or did she bust out with a `Why are you on the road?'

Oh, yeah, real f'ng nice of her. Her insurance should be buying you new everything, and compensating you for injuries and impact to your lifestyle. If the wheel/fork took enough damage to snap the fork, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the headset/tube are toast as well.

Glad you're ok, though!

My server is down, so those top pictures won't load.  Here's some smaller versions.

As for what she said to me and the police.  "I didn't even see him, he was going so fast he just came out of no-where"  She was definitely remorseful and physically shaking when she got out of the truck.

In front of the police at one point she said: "You should think about stopping at intersections like that".  I looked at her and said: "That's even more dangerous, it's a side road, I have the right of way and I'm keeping up with traffic.  I'm likely to get rear ended by a car behind me that's waiting to turn on that road if I stopped".  The officer looked at her, turned to me and just said: "Definitely don't stop, you'll get killed doing that, you were in the right here"

She should have been buying you the beer at the bar, glad to hear it wasn't worse.

And see if she'll cover the bike out of pocket or at least your home owners insurance deductible in trade for her not being sued in small claims for the bike. This will get you on the road a whole lot faster as you can buy a bike as soon as you have cash in hand. Make sure you get enough to cover the cost of an equivalent replacement.

Good luck!

Glad to hear you are all right. I would still recommend seeing your doctor to get checked out. You can never be too sure. I am also glad she stopped and was willing to help you it sounds like. It also sounds like you were lucky in that you had a knowledgable and kind officer at the scene to take the report.

The only question I have out of curiousity is what type of lights were you running and what is the law in CO regarding bike safety (other than, I am assuming, a helmet) and were you following them? If you were not and the insurance company finds out you could be out of money/a new bike...

No lights required during the day.  This was on my way home from work, so it was still nice and bright out.  Definitely had a helmet on otherwise I might have been knocked out/concussion/etc.  As far as laws/gear I should be safe on that with the insurance company.

I am going to go to the doctor to get my hand checked on because I'm unable to put pressure on my thumb without it hurting... so things like turning the key to get in my house, start the car, push the button in on the shifter for the car hurt pretty bad.  Hopefully that's just deep muscles bruising and not a fracture or something.

Unfortunately I don't have the cash on hand to fix the bike myself, so I'm trying to find a bike to do my HIM on in two weeks.  I doubt her insurance will pay for me to rent a bike for it.

I bet the carbon fiber the bike would be intact and the plastic on the Prius would break instead ;-)

Oh and at least you left your mark on her truck. When someone asks what happened, she won't forget how she nearly plowed over a cyclist!

That is good to hear! I just always worry about that due to a friend who got in a similar accident (left hook etc...) last year and after the insurance company learned the he was riding without a front reflector (required here if I remember right, but I dont recall if it was a county or state law) they denied his claim because he was not riding legally...they still covered medical but would do nothing to replace his bike. stupid situation!

Hope the Thumb feels better, good luck finding a bike. Do you belong to a tri Club or Cycle club? If so check with other members and see if someone has a bike they can loan you for race day. I know the club I belong to would have someone step up if this had happened to me a few weeks before a big race.

Left hook is the most common car/bike accident.  You're very lucky, friend.

Same with motorcycles... lost two riding acquaintances to this motorist inexplicably pulling left in front of you.  I take many lessons of riding on the road from my years of motorcycling... one is assume everyone is going to pull out, in front, etc.

Glad to hear the OP is OK.  In my experience of motorcyle accidents they need to make you whole... medical, bike and new gear included since she was at fault.

Honestly, when I started riding motorcycle a few year ago, it made me a much better automobile driver because you MUST have great situational awareness.  I'm hoping that helps me on the bike as well.  Just always project what a car can possibly do wrong and be ready for evasive manuevers.

reading this: "I leave scrape marks all down the side of the truck" gives me some sick satisfaction that you picked option 3.
