Guys and Gals,

This is not a business solicitation.  I have been on BT for three years and remain an active Silver Member.  That said, I am looking for some input from active athletes and thought BT would be the first place to look.

I have all the toys for tris including the Garmin 305 HRM.  Love it and the input it provides.  However, one crucial componet that I think is important for performance evaluation is the change in body temprature during training and racing.

I have filed a patent application and developed a prototype for an easy to use device that gives a user constant feed back on body temprature change.  I am not going to fully describe the device at this time, but would like some feedback from the BT Community.

If a device was availabe that could instantly provide evaluations of change in body temperature (thus helping the user recognize the possibility of dehydration and heat stroke, before actual symtoms appear) would you wear it?  The cost of such device would be below $20 and reuseable and would not limit the motion of an athlete in any form.

We have conducted a patent search and have had a positive report....so please don't tell me about all of the other devices on the market.  This is a unique, easy to use, easy to read device that will hopefully help prevent heat stroke or heat related illness.

We are working with a manufactuer to develop several units for testing, and would welcome any BTers out there to become lab rats.  You would have to sign a non-disclosure agreement and would be provided a unit a no cost.  In addition there would be some data to record on spreadsheets during testing.......yeah you would be the idiot in spandex with a clipboard on the stationary bike and treadmill!

Let me know your thoughts on this BT!

I race terribly in the heat and would be interested in something like this just to see if there were any correlations to my performances and heat acclimation/body temps.

So yes, I'd be interested!

I'm always up for being poked and prodded.   Even if figuratively.  Plus, I love experiments.

I'm in.

I'm a grad student in genetics, so I'm up for being a lab rat.   Plus, I've had some problems with dehydration and heat stroke during races, so this would be a good chance to monitor that.  It is an interesting idea.

I'd try it for free :-)    Not much of a gadget guy, so would not buy it.  Good luck with the product though.  I wish you much success!

I might be interested for the same reasons as Daremo, personal correlation, but I don't think it would work the way you intend. By the time the skin gets around to registering enough of a difference (Other than normal exercise temperature change) you are already too far gone into the heat exhaustion/stroke cycle to really make a difference. Other symptoms will have appeared long before the skin temp starts being a factor.

Additionally, everyone runs different temperatures internally, how do you correlate that? How would you establish a personal baseline? How do you adjust for people in different temperature/environments? (Such as when I go back and forth from Phoenix, Az. to Denver, Co.?)

I am game, but I am not sticking anything up my @zz, which is of coarse the most accurate route to gauge temp.

Being that I live and train in the desert, this is something that I think could be very valuable.  Interesting.

Great responses so far.....tkd.teacher, we are working on solving those issues and think we have already addressed one or two of your questions.  At this time, I can not go into details, but those are concerns we have already had.

No worries about things being stuck up the a$$.......that does not apply to this particular device (at least not at this time!)

I also have serious issues with high temps and humidity and would be interested in being able to keep tabs on something like this.

I'd be interested. I'm usually cold, so maybe I would be good for your statistics.
Also, I think women deal with heat differently than men to some degree.

I enjoy training in the Texas heat.  I'd be interested in the device and in becoming a tester.  A NDA would be expected in this situation.

Definitely interested.  I'd also like to see if there is any correlation between how your body is effected by temperature and your geographic location.  This product should be able to tell how adaptive your body would be to hotter environments, by the sound of it.  Very interesting.

Cool. As long as you've thought about things like that.

I'd be up for a test. I run hot normally (couple degrees of "fever" most days), AND I'm in a hot environment (Phoenix). I generally correlate with my sweat rate and weight loss per workout.

I'd love to have seen my numbers at IM Canada...I was in a very very bad place on the bike and lost most of my ability to think beyond the most basic level..I'm thirsty and hot. I think I had the trifecta of bad things going on, sick, very hot, dehydrated due to vomiting and low on calories.

I'd be in.  I had a terrible time with the heat at IMFL 70.3 this year and I'm headed to Cancun 70.3 in two weeks.  If you want to test the effects of heat, that furnace would probably do the trick.

Same here.  I'm a female who is usually cold and handles higher heat well.  I'm interested.

Heh. Not unless I've had it for the past 30 years. :D I've always run 1-2 degrees above the "normal" 98.6. I am a space heater.

Edited to add: I'm also a fairly heavy sweater. I'll lose 3/4 - 1 lb per mile on a run (Generally don't drink on runs), and 3-5 lbs per hour on a bike (with fluid replenishment). My TKD classes during the summer when I'm in a canvas dobok I'll lose 2-4 lbs per hour.

I'll help if needed.  I live in FL and temperature and humidity (along with accuweather.com Realfeel computation) is something I've been tracking on my runs this year.  Every once in awhile I'll have heat related/not optimally hydrated/running with the wind moments during a run that I'll have to run-walk.

I'm very good with gathering data and using MS Office.

If it would involve running on a dreadmill or stationary bike in ideal conditions, I'm out!
