| , Texas | Subject: RE: Friday fun: what is the crappiest / oldest bike with which you completed a tri My first 3 tris (Fall '05- Spring '06) were on an 12 speed down-tube shifted '87 Schwinn Tempo I got from a co-worker for $50. I still have it and it's currently setup as a single speed cyclo-cross bike. In '06, I got a '95 Klein Aeolus and my current tri bike is a '99 Litespeed Tachyon (with a newer Javelin in between). It went to pasture a week before my first race of 2006. (had to borrow a bike for that one and then picked up the road bike I have today.) |

Wheels spun 3 times before griding to a stop. I did my first tri on this bike, but it was too big, so I sold it. And did many other tris and bike raceson a 1980s Cannondale Criterium (pics in my album). It was a 6 speed 105 bike, which got converted to an 8 speed to bring the shifter to the handle bars and I used it like that for quite a bit longer. So they were old, but not crappy. I used the Bianchi in 2003, and raced the Cannondale from 2003-2005. After that it was the winter bike until 2009. Now it isn't used. Edited by jeng 2010-01-22 5:39 PM |

Fat knobby tires and all. Thing must have weighed 30 pounds. I still have both of them and my kids won't even ride them. |

In 1986 (yeah, that's right, I invented triathlon), my first year of racing, I rode on a British Raleigh Record (Raleighs sold in the US were made in the US) from 1975 or '76. It was a real tank- It wasn't just heavy, it freewheeled like it was on tank tracks. So that fall I bought a 60inch Nishiki that was on sale for a great price. I was stretched out on that thing like a Cathar on the rack. Way too big. But at least it rolled. And it rolled for 14 years. Edited by blairrob 2010-01-22 11:31 PM |

That makes is about 32 years old at the time. It was my old college bike. It was pretty high-end (for a Schwinn) when I bought it with quick-release hubs, tubular front fork and toe clips. It wasn't "crappy"; I've kept it in great shape over the years. Before my first race I disassembled the whole thing, cleaned & regreased the bearings, replaced the cables and brake pads. The thing is just about indestructable, but with the steel frame it weighs a ton. Still hanging out in my garage. Bought my current bike, a Cannondale R700 in early 2005. Mark

It was about 15 years old and had spent the previous few years unused in a shed.  Not having a fancy tri or road bike is not an excuse to not do a triathlon. |

Got rid of the drop bars, added a tri front end and bar cons. Bike weight around 25lbs and served me well for my first season (four races). To get it ready for a triathlon I removed the rack on the back. I did really well in the triathlon. This of course was before the days of aerobars and disk wheels. |

| 126 | Subject: RE: Friday fun: what is the crappiest / oldest bike with which you completed a tri For my first tri ever in '08 and first couple of tris last year, I rode a early 1980's Azuki 12 speed. Azuki was a Nishiki knock off. I rode it for a few years around as I grew up until I got my license. It stayed parked in my parents garage from 1985-2008 when I got it out, replaced tires, gave it a tune up and raced my first tri. Still has the original components, although I did have to replace the chain last year. It is now worth far more than the couple of hundred bucks I paid for it in the early 80's with the proceeds of delivering papers. It was the bike I was riding when I met my wife in '84 at the age of 15. I keep it for sentimental reasons and will likely never sell it. Its not crappy, just a little worn, a little too heavy, and it does have a few years and miles on it. Kinda like me......j/k. |
