Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Barefoot running mechanics paper So all these people are on the fad to train barefoot. Then what do they do when they race? (on concrete or asphalt) Wear shoes, right? So then they screw up their legs becuase all of the sudden they have cushioning/soles. Oh okay, they use those absolutely ridiculous five finger crap. They still end up more prone to injury because of the surface they are running on. Sure, perhaps humans learned to run throughout history with barefeet. But they also were running on dirt and grasslands .... NOT pavement and concrete. Gawd I can't wait for this fad to pass ................. |

Barefoot article. Don't know how useful it is but thought I would post it. Unfortunately, your link is just a story about the actual article. It is not a link to the article that examined the mechanics of barefoot running- just a reporters interpretations of the article, and a few quotes from the author of the article. This has already been discussed on a few previous threads, but gives absolutely no new information to the debate. I would LOVE to see someone come up to Michigan and run barefoot right now Even my dog has issues with the snow, ice and salt. I'm thinking she needs a pair of shoes to prevent injury |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Barefoot running mechanics paper The only aspect of the "barefoot" movement I kind of agree with is the notions that a lot of running shoe's are a bit overbuilt. I like the more minimalist shoe concept. Barefoot, however, makes no practical sense whatsoever. |

I know the Barefoot Ted guy has talked about doing an ironman race on one of those high wheeler bikes from the 1800's, the kind with giant front wheel and one speed. Dang how bad would that feel if something like that passed you in a race. |

Champion 8936 | Subject: RE: Barefoot running mechanics paper I don't have a dog in this fight, but I do wonder why the concept makes some people so angry. If there was conclusive proof that one way or the other was superior, then I might see the point. There's not and likely won't be, so why get all uptight about what other people choose to do with themselves? |

Expert 939 Tulsa | Subject: RE: Barefoot running mechanics paper I think some of you miss one of the big reasons for barefoot running. It's to help you learn to be a midfoot or forfoot striker. And I know some of you are going to say that heel striking is fine if it's under your cog, but i would have to disagree. Only because it's nearly impossible to heel strike directly under your cog. Also, when you heel strike out in front of your body it is actually stopping you. When your heel hits there is a instantaneous point in time where your body is completely stopped. This is why heel striking causes more stress in your joints etc. It's fine to disagree, but i have seen the benefits first hand. My friend started running in the 5 finger shoes (close to barefoot) and it totally changed his stride and where he lands on his feet. He didn't have many injuries running in regular shoes, but the dr said his knees were totally messed up (he's 28). He was having major pain in his knees. After wearing them for 5 months his pain is way less. He still puts on shoes to do trail runs etc, but his form and where he strikes the ground have totally changed because of the 5 fingers he's been wearing. There may be some people out there that heel stike close to their cog, but i'm guessing the majority of people with injuries stide way out and hit on their heels. I think doing some barefoot running in the grass a few times a week would help a lot of people. Look at it like drills in the pool. Thats my 2 cents anyway. http://www.barefootrunning.fas.harvard.edu/
