Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok boys and girls I will preface this by saying there is no way I can ever be talked into buying another PC/Window's driven laptop again. I am done with the bluescreen of death and countless "Please report error to Microsoft"...... I am down to decision time and want to know your opinion on the MacBooks. The MacBook retails at 999 and the MacBook Pro 1199. For my extra 200 dollars I get 2 more GB of RAM, a backlit keyboard, a firewire port(are those even necessary anymore) and an SD card reader... I'm honestly only going to be surfing the web, using iTunes, light document work and the basic picture stuff....do I really need the extra 2GB of RAM because I can sure live without the other stuff... Anyone have experience with either or (even better) both? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You also get a way better screen with the Pro. Totally worth the extra money. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks...although way better might seem a stretch as I'll be coming from my old Dell XPS 140 |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, i work for Dell, and i always buy Mac. ;-) The extra features the Pro has is SO worth 200 bucks. I've got an 11.6" macbook air now, and i'd pay 200 bucks just for a backlit keyboard. |

![]() MacBook Pro all the way! Yeah, better looking graphics as well as larger if you wanna go that route. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MBP no question. The billet AL frame vs the cheap plastic frame is worth the $200 alone. |

![]() | ![]() I can't help on the comparison but I've had my Macbook Pro for one month now and I love it. Love it! It sounds like I am a similar user to you but now that I'm starting to see what my Mac can do I might start doing a bit more with photos as well. A tip fo you. If you have trouble transfering your files over, make a Genius bar appointment, take both computers and they'll give you the directions on how to transfer and then let you sit right there and do it where they're available for questions. Or for $99 you can get a package where they'll do it all for you. Careful though, while sitting there I ended up buying an iPhone4. Oops. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() last computer is at the blue screen of death phase...luckily most files were backed up on line so not too worried about it So even if I would like to save the $200 bucks right now I shouldn't? I guess my question was will I be unhappy with the macbook?

If you get the macbook, don't ever borrow someone's macbook pro. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Our iTunes library isn't very large and actually mine is probably the smallest of the three in our house, whatever video I do is shot with our phones, and other than simple photo tweaks we don't do a lot with our pictures(and most are stored at Picasa) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have no idea about the newer intel processors, i'm still using the powerbook (yes its from 2003). I have one of the last rounds before they moved to the new processors, and its amazing. its still going strong and does almost everything i need from it. The titanium (or whatever they are using now) body is 100% worth it. I've had mine get rained on at a shoot, its fallen off the car twice, etc, and it will works. |

Anyone have experience with either or (even better) both? You're going from a PC (which I am positive stands for Piece of Crud) to a Mac. ANY Mac is going to seem like a rocket. Trust me, I just dumped a Dell for a new iMac and just turning it on brought tears of happiness to my eyes. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with everyone else. I have a MBP and I love it. The aluminum casing is worth the extra money. That being said, you will be happy with the MB coming from a PC. Congrats on finally seeing the light, even if it's not coming from the keyboard |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a MB and I absolutely love it. Although, according to what the Mac-guy said... I might do better with a MBP. I have a HUGE photo library and I run Aperture to fix exposures, etc etc. I have a medium iTunes library and I don't do much with videos except upload them. I still love my MB, but I think when (if) it ever croaks (I've had nary an issue in 3 years) I will upgrade to MBP. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Have a look at the Apple refurb store. They are typically $200-300 cheaper than new and come with all the same warranties. Honestly you'd never knew they were not new. Have bought 3 through the refurb store with great results. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook_pro?mco=MTkyMTQ5MjA Edited by TriRSquared 2011-01-25 2:57 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had two older MacBook Pro (non-dual core days). And then when my old company gave us $$ to buy new computers, Apple was right in the middle of the transition of upgrading the MacBooks but didn't yet have the MacBook Pro upgraded. So basically it meant that the old-model MacBook Pro was the same processor and ram as the MacBook. I ended up buying the MacBook. I had $2K to spend. So I bought the MacBook for $999 and then got an iMac for $1199. I had a 10% discount card from the manager b/c they messed up a repair on one of my old MacBook Pros. So all in, I came under the $2K, got two computers and just had to pay the tax. That being said, I've never had an issue with my MacBook. Would I like to be one of the "cool kids" with an aluminum case? Yes, but I got over it pretty quickly. My scenario was different b/c I was trying to maximize $2K and replace TWO MacBook Pros at once. But I will say that only after buying my MacBook did I realize that I wasn't able to play a game I bought because the game didn't support the low-level processor. For an extra $200 and if it is your primary computer, definitely would be worth it. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a MacBook that my friend gave me as a hand-me-down Christmas/Birthday gift in 2009. He bought it two weeks before MacWorld, and a month later decided he really wanted to MacBook Pro. I'm happy with my MacBook. I never think I need more memory or speed. And the size is perfect for taking it to class. The MacBook Pro is wider, and that's nice for gaming (he does), and he uses the extra space for running a Linux partition (or somesuch something or other). My keyboard is backlit, so I don't know if that means it's standard or what. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bradword - 2011-01-25 9:07 AMNot to mention you get an aluminum construction vs plastic. X2 on the MBP. For this reason, get the Pro. I had a Macbook and if you do anything besides park it on your desk, the Pro will hold up better. |

I would still pay the extra $200 if I could afford it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've had my 17" MBP for over two years now and it has functioned beautifully as a desktop replacement. Can't compare it with regular MB's, but I've seen the difference in the screen and that's enough for me right there. |
